Malaysia To Host GSMA M360 ASEAN From 2026 To 2028
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host the GSMA M360 ASEAN event series from 2026 to 2028 under a multi-year strategic partnership signed between the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). The agreement, signed yesterday at the Mobile World Congress (MWC25) in Shanghai, names Malaysia as the official host nation for the M360 ASEAN series, with the inaugural edition to be held in Kuala Lumpur in September 2026. The collaboration marks a major step in positioning Malaysia as a regional hub for digital policy dialogue, industry innovation, and cross-border cooperation in Southeast Asia. MCMC Executive Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Salim Fateh Din said the partnership is a long-term strategic investment in regional leadership. "Malaysia is committed to being a convening platform for high-impact conversations on the future of connectivity. M360 ASEAN will be a space where policy meets innovation, and regional priorities find global resonance," he said in a statement. The M360 ASEAN event is expected to bring together leaders from both the public and private sectors across Asia and beyond, focusing on key digital economy issues such as 5G evolution, connectivity, cybersecurity, and digital inclusion. Meanwhile, in the same statement, GSMA Chief Regulatory Officer John Giusti said the hosting of M360 ASEAN and this year's Digital Nation Summit reflects Malaysia's strong commitment to ASEAN's digital ambitions. "Hosting both this year's Digital Nation Summit and next year's M360 ASEAN in Malaysia underscores our strong support for the region's 2045 vision. "By bringing together governments, mobile operators, and technology innovators, we aim to accelerate collaboration, investment, and inclusive connectivity across all ASEAN countries, laying the foundation for a more resilient and people-centred digital future. We're excited to launch the inaugural M360 ASEAN in Kuala Lumpur in 2026!" he said.

South Korea's largest AI data centre on the anvil
Seoul: SK Group , a South Korean chip-to-construction conglomerate, said on Monday it plans to build the country's largest artificial intelligence (AI) data centre in partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS). The two companies are expected to launch the project later this month and hold a groundbreaking ceremony in August, according to industry sources. "They have been working on the project, but the exact timeline and other details have yet to be finalised," an SK Group spokesperson said, reports Yonhap news agency. The facility will be located in the Mipo industrial complex in Ulsan, 305 kilometers southeast of Seoul. It will house 60,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) and have a power capacity of 100 megawatts, making it the country's first AI infrastructure of such scale, the sources said. Ryu Young-sang, chief executive officer (CEO) of SK Telecom Co., had announced the company's plan to build a hyperscale AI data centre equipped with 60,000 GPUs in collaboration with a global tech partner, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 held in Spain in March. SK Telecom plans to invest 3.4 trillion won (US$2.49 billion) in AI infrastructure by 2028, with a significant portion expected to be allocated to the data centre project. AWS, a subsidiary of Amazon, provides on-demand cloud computing platforms and application programming interfaces (APIs) to individuals, businesses and governments on a pay-per-use basis. Meanwhile, LG Energy Solution , South Korea's leading battery manufacturer, said on Monday it has secured a deal with China's Chery Automobile Co. to supply cylindrical electric vehicle (EV) batteries. Under the deal, LG Energy Solution will supply a combined 8 gigawatt-hours of its next-generation 46-series cylindrical batteries to Chery Automobile over the next six years. The volume is enough to power approximately 120,000 EVs, according to the company. The value of the contract was not disclosed but industry observers estimate it to stand at around 1 trillion won (US$730 million). The supply is scheduled to begin early next year, with the batteries to be installed in Chery's flagship EV models. The 46-series cylindrical batteries offer over five times the energy capacity and output of conventional cylindrical cells, and are known for their high production efficiency. LG Energy Solution said the deal has proven the excellence of its proprietary nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM)-based 46-series battery, which outperforms lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries in cold temperatures and charging efficiency while also delivering superior energy density. The two companies plan to expand their partnership to include additional EV models across the Chery Group.

Chinese router maker TP-Link cuts staff at Shanghai chip unit, retains Shenzhen facility
TP-Link, China's leading Wi-fi router manufacturer, has laid off most employees at a chip development unit in Shanghai amid setbacks, according to people familiar with the matter and local media reports. Lianzhou International, known globally as TP-Link Systems and the overseas arm of the router maker, cut the majority of workers at its Shanghai-based chip unit last week, according to two people with knowledge of the situation, who declined to be named because they are not authorised to speak to news media. The lay-offs, first reported by Chinese media on Saturday, primarily affected employees working on the front-end module of Wi-fi chipsets, spanning roles such as algorithms and verification, according to the reports. The total number of affected employees remains unclear. TP-Link did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday. One source said the cuts followed difficulties in chip development, with one product failing to pass final testing. TP-Link's booth at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, on March 3. Amazon, SK Group will build AI data center in Korea
SEOUL, June 16 (UPI) -- South Korea's SK Group will join hands with Amazon Web Services, know as AWS, the world's top cloud provider, to build a large-scale artificial intelligence data center in Ulsan, some 250 miles southeast of Seoul. The Ulsan Metropolitan City government announced Monday that the two parties would invest $5.1 billion to build a 41-megawatt facility by 2027 and expand it to 103 MW by 2029. However, details such as the specific investment breakdown between the two partners have not been disclosed. The project is scheduled to kick off this month, with a groundbreaking ceremony projected in August or September. Once complete, the data center will be powered by 60,000 graphics processing units "SK applied for construction of the data center in January, and we granted approval last month. Our dedicated officials will support the project," Ulsan Mayor Kim Doo-gyeom told a press Telecom, a major subsidiary of SK Group and the country's largest mobile operator, is predicted to lead the joint project with AWS. During the Mobile World Congress in March in Spain, SK Telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang revealed a plan to construct a data center equipped with 60,000 GPUs. In April, SK Telecom and affiliate SK Broadband reportedly spent more than $20 million to secure a 387,500-square-foot site -- about the size of seven football fields -- in an Ulsan industrial complex. Nearby, SK Group unit SK Gas operates a liquefied natural gas-combined heat and power plant, a significant advantage given the high electricity demands of mega-scale data centers.
