NBK showcases digital leadership, commitment to ‘Diraya' campaign
KUWAIT: Abdulmohsen Al-Rushaid, Senior Vice President - Head of Digital Communications at National Bank of Kuwait (NBK), emphasized the bank's integral role in supporting the nationwide banking awareness campaign 'Let's Be Aware' (Diraya), launched by the Central Bank of Kuwait (CBK) in collaboration with local banks and Kuwait Banking Association. The campaign aims to foster financial literacy, promote financial inclusion, and educate customers across all segments of society. Speaking during an interview on the Kuwait TV show 'Good Evening Kuwait', Al-Rushaid stated: 'At NBK, we operate around the clock to track the latest fraud schemes, raise customer awareness, and provide guidance on how to avoid falling victim to these scams through educational content shared across our social media platforms.' He also underscored the importance of the Virtual Central Room, launched jointly by Kuwait Banking Association, local banks and relevant authorities including the Ministry of Interior and the Public Prosecution, under the direction of CBK. Al-Rushaid described this initiative as the first line of defense against cyber fraud, noting that it operates 24/7 to receive fraud reports and monitor suspicious activity - enhancing customer safety and reinforcing confidence in the banking sector. Al-Rushaid further noted that the 'Let's Be Aware' campaign is the largest of its kind in the region, significantly contributing to improved financial awareness among the public. He urged the public to remain vigilant, follow the bank's security guidelines shared across all digital platforms, and refrain from disclosing any personal or banking information to unauthorized parties. He also cautioned against responding to messages or calls that falsely claim to be from the bank and request sensitive data. He explained that the bank will never request personal information via email, text messages, or phone calls, warning that any such communication is likely a fraud attempt designed to steal banking credentials, sensitive data, or funds. Furthermore, he reiterated NBK's strong commitment to promoting banking awareness, especially among older generations who are more vulnerable to scams due to the advanced technologies and artificial intelligence tools used by fraudsters. Al-Rushaid also warned against booking accommodations through unverified websites or brokers. He advised verifying the legitimacy of any company or platform by inspecting properties in person before making payments, to avoid fraud. In cases of suspicious activity, customers are encouraged to contact the bank immediately and activate transaction alerts via the NBK Mobile App to receive real-time notifications. Leveraging its robust communication infrastructure and leading digital presence among Kuwaiti banks, NBK aims to ensure maximum reach and effectiveness for the campaign's educational messages. Digital excellence Mohammad Al-Dakhil, Assistant Vice President - Digital Business at NBK, confirmed that customers can now temporarily suspend their bank cards through the NBK mobile banking app if they suspect any unusual account activity. During the interview, Al-Dakhil stated: 'At NBK, we are committed to advancing our digital leadership through the services offered on our mobile banking app, which is a key platform for customers conducting their day-to-day banking. We continually strive to introduce new features and enhancements that deliver a superior digital banking experience - one that not only meets, but exceeds, customer expectations.' He added that the bank is consistently innovating to enrich the digital journey, citing the recent launch of the full account opening service via NBK mobile banking app - making NBK the first bank in Kuwait to offer this function digitally. The NBK mobile banking app also allows customers to issue digital prepaid gift cards. These virtual cards can be easily created, loaded and sent to friends or family for use in stores or online, both within Kuwait and abroad. The recipient can instantly add the card to their digital wallet and begin using it for purchases. Al-Dakhil also highlighted the success of the WAMD service, developed in partnership with KNET. The service allows for fast, seamless money transfers at any time of day, offering users a streamlined transfer process with just a few steps. In the meantime, Al-Dakhil further spotlighted the cutting-edge services offered by Weyay Bank - the first digital bank in Kuwait. Among its key innovations is the introduction of a fully digital loan application process for both personal and housing loans, allowing customers to submit documents, receive approvals, and sign contracts entirely through the app. Weyay has also launched Jeel, a first-of-its-kind digital experience in Kuwait tailored for children aged 8 to 14. The service enables young users to manage their spending under parental supervision, fostering early financial literacy through a dedicated child-friendly app interface. Thanks to its pioneering digital services, Weyay Bank has earned several prestigious accolades, most notably being named Best Digital Bank in Kuwait by Euromoney at the 2025 Middle East Excellence Awards. The recognition affirms Weyay's leadership in delivering innovative digital banking solutions tailored to evolving customer needs. Since its launch, Weyay Bank has transformed the digital banking landscape in Kuwait by offering a comprehensive suite of services - from account opening and savings management to local and international transfers, and digital loan access - empowering customers to manage their finances flexibly and efficiently. South L.A. mother deports herself to Mexico amid Trump's immigration crackdown, family says
Amid a surge in raids and forced deportations by federal immigration agents, a South Los Angeles mother deported herself last week to Mexico after living in the U.S. for 36 years, according to her family. The woman's daughter, Julia Ear, recorded the entire experience and posted the video on TikTok. The family drove from Los Angeles to Tijuana on June 7 while demonstrators were taking to the streets in downtown L.A. to protest the Trump administration's immigration crackdown and ongoing raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Ear told CBS News that her mother, Regina Higuera, 51, chose to self-deport after seeing the increase in immigration raids and deciding that she didn't want to be deported against her will. 'She made this decision out of fear,' Ear said. While fear is a motivator for some, the Trump administration has also offered undocumented immigrants $1,000 if they return to their home country voluntarily. Anyone who uses the the Customs and Border Protection Home Mobile App to inform the government that they plan to return home, the department said, would receive a $1,000 payment after their return is confirmed by the government. It is unclear how many people have taken advantage of this program. Higuera's family drove her to the airport in Tijuana, where she took a flight to Mexico City and then drove five hours to Guerrero state, where she plans on retiring. 'With my mom's complicated legal status, she decided to do this in her own terms,' Ear says in the TikTok video. 'She has no criminal record and is a hardworking taxpayer who has been working 12-hour shifts since she was 15, six days out of the week.' Higuera first moved to the U.S. when she was 15 and hadn't seen her mother in 22 years, Ear says in the video. Along with her children, she left behind three grandchildren in the U.S. Her husband was planning to join her in Mexico in a few months. 'She asked me not to cry, to let her go in peace, to take care of myself and not to trust all of these new people I'm meeting,' Ear says in the video. As of early June, around 51,000 undocumented migrants were in ICE custody, the highest number since September 2019.

Pittsburgh's air quality noses into the "sensitive" range on Thursday afternoon
With most being dry today, and day one of the U.S. Open starting up at Oakmont, air quality is certainly the top weather headline. For our region, we normally have two real drivers when it comes to air pollution. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos One of those is when we have a ridge of high pressure in place, and ozone is created in the atmosphere. The ozone eventually mixes down to the ground, where it causes respiratory issues for those who may be vulnerable. Forecast for the U.S. Open in Oakmont this week KDKA Weather Center The second thing that we see when high pressure is in place is a 'cap', where sinking air doesn't allow for chemicals trapped at the surface, like pollutants from factories or even car exhaust, to escape into the atmosphere. There is also sometimes a third option when it comes to Canadian smoke. Today's concerns are about 8 parts ozone creation with two parts Canadian smoke. As of 4 a.m., no area is really close to hitting orange. Canadian smoke levels should peak this morning before easing as we head into the afternoon. Ozone levels peak in the afternoon with the sun at its highest angle. Air quality watches and warnings this afternoon in Western Pennsylvania KDKA Weather Center The official forecast has us just barely hitting the orange range due to a mix of both of these conditions. I think the best advice is if you have respiratory issues, or are over the age of let's say 65, you should take it easy today. Be aware of your body and how you are feeling. Everyone else should be fine. Let's get to your forecast. Highs today will hit the mid-80s. I have the noon temperature at 80 degrees. Dew points have ticked up around 10 degrees from yesterday, so humidity levels will be in the moderate range. The rain chance for today is isolated, with almost everyone dry. Rain chances over the next week KDKA Weather Center Rain chances will tick up on Friday with a round of scattered storms expected during the afternoon. Rain and storms could be fairly widespread on Saturday and potentially on Sunday. There may also be a flood risk on Saturday, depending on total rain. Highs will be in the mid-80s on Friday. Saturday and Sunday highs will be near 80°. 7-day forecast: June 12, 2025 KDKA Weather Center Stay up to date with the KDKA Mobile App – which you can download here!

President Trump approved a major federal disaster declaration on Tuesday, June 10, for the tornado that struck St. Louis, St. Louis County, and Scott County on May 16. This declaration makes individual and public assistance available to residents and local governments. State officials say it unlocks roughly $71 million in federal aid. A powerful EF‑3 tornado swept through north St. Louis suburbs and the city itself on May 16, 2025, at around 2:39 p.m. CDT. It left a 26-mile path of destruction over 26 minutes. Wind speeds reached 152 mph, and the twister widened to nearly a mile across at its peak. The devastation killed seven people in total and injured around 38 more. About 5,000 structures were damaged or destroyed, with overall property losses estimated at $1.6 billion. Federal emergency teams called this the most extensive residential destruction since the 2011 Joplin tornado. Residents described missing siren alerts and widespread power outages. Many homes, churches, businesses, and key areas such as Forest Park were severely hit. Live Events Mayor Cara Spencer said that 'no city can shoulder this burden alone,' calling federal support essential. In response, the Federal Emergency Management Agency ( FEMA ) has opened assistance programs, and below are the guidelines for receiving help. Is Starbucks open on Memorial Day 2025?
As we get close to the middle of the year, we start to feel tired and long for holidays that allow us to spend more relaxing and celebratory time with family. And when a holiday falls perfectly after a weekend, creating a three-day break, that's even better. Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday in May, fits perfectly into the picture. But did you know that wasn't always the case? Related: Stock market holidays & half days 2025: A complete list Back in 1868, General John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the GAR, called on former soldiers and their communities to decorate the graves of their fallen comrades. Logan called for Decoration Day to occur on May 30, because it was not the anniversary of any particular battle. When the Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968, Memorial Day was established as a federal holiday on the last Monday of May, so that it could be a three-day weekend, avoiding midweek disruptions to industrial and commercial activity. Speaking of closures, considering that it is a federal holiday, government offices, schools, motor vehicle agencies, banks, and stock exchanges are closed. As for supermarkets, grocery stores, and pharmacies, some remain open but reduce hours, while others close. What about the place where we get the best coffee? Is Starbucks (SBUX) open on Memorial Day? If you're planning to start Memorial Day with your usual Starbucks coffee, you should be aware of its store hours. The renowned coffee chain does not have fixed operating hours for all locations, so if you are traveling for the holiday, be sure to check the hours for your specific location.
