Mitchell Marsh is currently on the outer when it comes to the Australian Test team - but it didn't stop the all-rounder from uttering a savage sledge about retired English paceman Jimmy Anderson. Marsh, 33, spoke to the North Melbourne playing group this week ahead of their AFL 'home' clash against Fremantle on Saturday night at Optus Stadium - and 'Bison' couldn't resist having a playful dig at Anderson, who has 704 Test wickets to his name. 'In your career, who was one bowler you found easy to get away,' one of the Kangaroos stars asked Marsh. Marsh's response was brutal: ' James he played in Australia, he was pedestrian.' He then quickly realised he was on camera, with Marsh hilariously backtracking. 'Sorry I didn't mean that,' he sheepishly said. Marsh then referenced Anderson's '600 wickets' - and then it was older brother Shaun's turn to liven up the room. 'I'll say Stuart Broad,' he quipped. Ashes villain Broad was also a noted performer at Test level, snaring 604 wickets in his career. The paceman - who never hid his dislike for Australia's stars in his playing days - clearly hasn't changed since hanging up his spikes in 2023. This week he acted as a consultant for South Africa in the lead up to the World Test Championship final against Pat Cummins' men. Broad revealed how he aimed to help the Proteas pace attack at Lord's. 'I certainly won't be going in and talking about individuals' actions before one of the biggest games of their careers,' he said. 'It's very much about the tactics of that particular ground and the nuances which that slope brings. A lot of overseas bowlers can sometimes take a spell to get used to playing there.' It seems to have worked - South Africa need just 69 runs - with eight wickets in hand - to win the final. Play resumes from 7.30pm AEST on Saturday, with the Proteas chasing their first ICC trophy in 27 years.

Marsh back to lead Australia in West Indies T20s

Mitchell Marsh will captain Australia on his return to the Twenty20 squad named yesterday for a fivematch series in the West Indies, while explosive batsman Mitchell Owen earned a first call-up. Fast bowler Josh Hazlewood is back, having been rested for Australia's last T20 series against Pakistan in November, and left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann makes the squad for the first time. Marsh missed the Pakistan series and has recovered from a lower back injury that kept him out of the Champions Trophy earlier this year. Australia's Test and 50-over captain Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Mitchell Starc were left out of the 16-man squad for the series next month. They will return to Australia following three Tests against the West Indies beginning on June 25.

Marsh returns to lead Australia against West Indies

Mitchell Marsh showed promising form with the bat in the IPL, where he amassed 627 runs in 13 innings. Photo: AFP/file Cricket Australia (CA) on Wednesday announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against the West Indies, set to begin next month. Uncapped players Mitchell Owen and Matt Kuhnemann have received their first international call-ups. Notably, promising young batter Jake Fraser-McGurk has been left out of the squad. Despite featuring in seven of Australia's last eight T20Is, Fraser-McGurk has managed just one half-century and failed to cross 20 runs in each of his other six innings. Xavier Bartlett and Marcus Stoinis have also been omitted. Mitchell Owen earned his spot after a stellar Big Bash League (BBL) season, where he finished as the tournament's leading run-scorer with 452 runs in 11 matches at an average of 45.20 and a remarkable strike-rate of 203.6. His explosive 108 off 42 balls in the final led the Hobart Hurricanes to the title and earned him the Player of the Match award. Mitchell Marsh will captain the side following a prolific IPL season, where he amassed 627 runs in 13 innings for the Lucknow Super Giants, including his maiden century in the tournament. Veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, who recently retired from ODI cricket, retains his place in the T20 squad. Tim David also returns after missing the latter part of the IPL season with champions Royal Challengers Bangalore. Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly make their comebacks following brief injury layoffs, while Josh Hazlewood is back after being rested for the recent T20I series against Pakistan. Australia have opted to rest key players Pat Cummins, Travis Head, and Mitchell Starc for the T20Is, with the series beginning in Jamaica on July 19—immediately after the conclusion of the three-match Test series. Chair of Selectors George Bailey emphasised the importance of squad depth and experimentation ahead of the T20 World Cup. "We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this series, followed by three against South Africa and New Zealand and five matches against India at home as we continue to refine and build a squad we think will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent," Chair of Selectors George Bailey said. "There are a number of players outside the squad who can still force their way into the mix for those upcoming Indian Series and through the Big Bash. "The connection, role development and combinations we will have as options are growing nicely as we build towards the World Cup. It's an exciting time in our T20 space," he added. Australia T20I squad: Mitchell Marsh (C), Sean Abbott, Cooper Connolly, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Aaron Hardie, Josh Hazlewood, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matt Kuhnemann, Glenn Maxwell, Mitch Owen, Matthew Short, Adam Zampa.

Mitchell Marsh to lead Australia's 16-member squad for T20I series in the Caribbean

Melbourne [Australia], June 4 (ANI): Mitchell Marsh, making his return to international action, has been appointed captain of a 16-member Australian squad for their upcoming T20I series against the West Indies in the Caribbean next month, according to the official website of the ICC. The Aussies meet the West Indies in Jamaica and St Kitts for five T20Is, as the team prepares for their 2026 T20 World Cup campaign early next year. Hard-hitting Mitch Owen and spinner Matt Kuhnemann are included in a nod to recent domestic form, while Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly also return, having recovered from respective injuries. Recent IPL champion Josh Hazlewood is another addition, having missed the side's last T20I series at home against Pakistan as part of his load management plan. There was no room in the squad for Jake Fraser-McGurk, Marcus Stoinis and Xavier Bartlett, while Pat Cummins, Travis Head and Mitchell Starc will sit out the series, returning to Australia following the Test series against the West Indies on the same tour. Australian chair of selectors George Bailey says the series is crucial in finding a group to take on next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. 'We have a busy T20 schedule coming up through this series, followed by three against South Africa and New Zealand and five matches against India at home as we continue to refine and build a squad we think will be the right fit for the World Cup on the subcontinent,' he said as quoted from the official website of ICC. 'There are a number of players outside the squad who can still force their way into the mix for those upcoming Indian Series and through the Big Bash (League),' he added. 'The connection, role development and combinations we will have as options are growing nicely as we build towards the World Cup,' he said. 'It's an exciting time in our T20 space,' he noted. The returning Marsh enjoyed a prolific 2025 IPL, making 627 runs for Lucknow Super Giants, including a maiden century. Australia comes into the series in strong form, having won 12 of their past 14 T20Is. RCB hero Josh Hazlewood stars in Mitchell Marsh-led Australia squad for West Indies T20Is

Cricket Australia has announced a 16-member squad for the side's five-match T20I series in the West Indies that scheduled to take place in July. The series is preceded by three Test matches, the first that Australia play in the West Indies in over a decade. Mitchell Marsh will captain the squad and Josh Hazlewood, who starred in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) win, has also been included. Glenn Maxwell, who recently announced his retirement from ODI cricket, has also been included in the squad. This is Australia's first T20I series since November last year, when they beat Pakistan away from home 3-0. The Carribean tour starts on June 25 in Barbados with the first Test. The second Test will be played from July 3 after which the series ends in Jamaica with the third match starting on July 12. The first two T20Is will then be played in Jamaica on July 20 and 22. The tour then moves to St Kitts where the remaining T20Is will be played on July 24, 25 and 27. Among the notable absentees are Jake Fraser-McGurk, Marcus Stoinis and Xavier Bartlett. Fraser-McGurk's poor form seems to have cost him his place in the team. He has long been seen as David Warner's heir to the opening role in the shortest format, and potentially in ODIs and Tests as well later on. According to ESPNCricinfo, CA wants him to play a bit more four-day cricket for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield to help him work on his all-round batting and decision-making to supplement his raw ball-striking ability. Meanwhile, uncertainty continues on the status of Marcus Stoinis. The all-rounder had retired from ODI cricket just before the 2025 Champions Trophy earlier this year. While he is available for selection in T20Is, Stoinis doesn't have a central contract and Australia's subsequent T20I series against South Africa overlaps with his commitments in The Hundred.
