QuickCheck: Does Tom Cruise hold the record for holding his breath underwater the longest for a movie?
PETALING JAYA: If you haven't watched 'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning' where lead actor Tom Cruise performs most of his stunts, you should see it. You have to admire his tenacity and dedication in performing these death-defying stunts, including holding his breath for six minutes during an underwater scene in 'Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation'. But is it true that Cruise is the movie star who held his breath underwater the longest for a movie? VERDICT: FALSE While Cruise's stunt in the 2015 movie was impressive, another movie star beat him to it, and that's Kate Winslet. She held her breath for seven minutes and 15 seconds while filming the 2022 movie 'Avatar: The Way of Water.' Winslet, who plays the Metkayina's Ronal in the film, learnt to freedive with the rest of the cast to film their underwater scenes. This record also landed the Titanic star in the Guinness Book of Records for the longest breath-hold on screen by a lead actor, beating Cruise's record as well. Winslet was surprised that she beat Cruise's record while filming the movie, which earned about USD2bil. "Poor Tom... I mean, I don't know Tom at all – I've never met him in my life – but I'm sure he's getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record," she told USA Today. "I loved it, though. I was amazed how good I was at it and how I just kept getting better," she added. Winslet's co-stars managed to hold their breath for a significant amount of time while filming as well. Sigourney Weaver reportedly held her breath underwater for six and a half minutes, while Zoe Saldaña held as long as five minutes. Director James Cameron was proud of Winslet's performance for the role. 'Kate's a demon for prep, so she latched onto the freediving as something that she could build her character around,' he told The New York Times. Cameron added that due to the nature the character Winslet was playing, she had to be utterly calm underwater – and said that she was a natural at it. The next instalment in the sci-fi franchise, 'Avatar: Fire and Ash', is scheduled to be released by the end of 2025. Tom Cruise breaks a wild world record in Mission Impossible Finale — here's what he did mid-air
Tom Cruise has once again pushed the boundaries of action filmmaking. The Mission Impossible star has entered the Guinness World Records for completing the highest number of flaming parachute jumps by any actor or stuntman. Cruise performed this feat by jumping out of a plane 16 times, each time strapped with a parachute pre-soaked in fuel and set on fire. He then cut off the burnt parachute mid-air and safely deployed a backup chute. The record-setting jumps were done as part of the action sequences in Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. The jump that broke records Cruise's record-breaking stunt was executed during the filming of the latest Mission Impossible installment. Director Christopher McQuarrie confirmed that during the sequence, Cruise had a 50-pound camera rig attached to his body, making the jump more complex. According to the Guinness World Records website, no actor or stunt performer has come close to matching the number or intensity of these jumps. Cruise's history of performing his own stunts Tom Cruise is known for performing most of his stunts, and this record further cements that reputation. For over 20 years, he has been flying planes and helicopters himself. He also holds licenses for every type of aircraft he's piloted in his films. His consistent effort to keep action sequences authentic has set him apart in the industry. The record site acknowledged this by highlighting the danger and uniqueness of his parachute jumps, calling them 'death-defying drops' unmatched by anyone else. Recognition and praise from Guinness officials Craig Glenday, editor-in-chief at Guinness World Records, praised Cruise's dedication. 'Tom doesn't just play action heroes — he is an action hero,' said Glenday. He also credited Cruise's success to his commitment to authenticity and willingness to go beyond traditional acting expectations. 'It's an honor to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title,' he added. More milestones in Cruise's career This is not Cruise's first recognition from Guinness. He is also the only actor to have 11 films that each grossed over $100 million at the box office. This record, combined with his latest achievement, showcases the consistency of his career and his longstanding appeal among audiences. Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning hits theatres After the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning was released in theatres, giving audiences a chance to witness the very stunts that earned Cruise this unique world Cruise's latest Guinness record adds another high-flying achievement to a career defined by fearless performances and unmatched dedication.

Mission Impossible 8 Box Office Day 17: Tom Cruise Starrer Sees Drop On 3rd Monday
Last Updated: Mission Impossible The Final Reckoning, featuring Tom Cruise, made only Rs 1.25 crore on Day 17, which is the lowest daily collection so far. Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning has successfully finished 17 days in theatres across India. Tom Cruise 's huge fan following always looks forward to his movies as he's known for doing his own stunts, which makes him a true action star. Despite clashing with other releases, the Christopher McQuarrie directorial stayed strong at the box office. It is now close to earning Rs 100 crore in India, which is a big milestone for a Hollywood film. But the film's latest Monday earnings dropped compared to the weekend. According to reports, the action thriller made only Rs 1.25 crore on Day 17, which is the lowest daily collection so far. According to Sacnilk, The Final Reckoning made a decent amount on its third Monday, as the total collection now stands at Rs 91.70 crore. This includes earnings from all language versions, English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. After a slightly slow second week, Cruise's movie picked up the pace by earning Rs 3.65 crore on Saturday and Rs 3.75 crore on Sunday. These numbers show that the movie has managed to bring back the audience's interest. So far this year, very few Hollywood films have done well in India, but The Final Reckoning seems to be changing that trend. In India, it seems other Hollywood releases like Final Destination: Bloodlines and Lilo & Stitch live action may have been affecting the response to Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning. This added competition might be slowing down the film's box office performance, especially in its third week. Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the film marks the final chapter in the Mission Impossible series. Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt, the brave IMF agent known for going on the toughest missions. He is joined by his trusted team, played by Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny and Angela Bassett. This time, the team faced a dangerous mission involving a powerful AI known as The Entity. As this threat grows stronger, Hunt and his crew must do everything they can to stop it before it ends the world. Released in India on May 17, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning also stars Esai Morales, Nick Offerman, Hannah Waddingham, Tramell Tillman, Shea Whigham, Greg Tarzan Davis, Mark Gatiss and Charles Parnell.
