First boat carrying 1,500 stranded Israelis docks in Israel: army

The Israeli military said that the first boat carrying Israelis stranded abroad due to the Iran-Israel war arrived Friday with 1,500 citizens aboard. "As part of the Ministry of Transportation's Operation 'Safe Return', a passenger ship bringing Israelis from the Port of Limassol in Cyprus docked today... at the Ashdod Port with over 1,500 Israelis on board," the military said in a statement. "The ship was secured (during its journey) by an Israeli Navy missile boat", the military added. After Israel's airports were closed and outbound flights cancelled following Israel's attack on Iran last Friday, an estimated 100,000-150,000 Israelis found themselves stranded abroad, according to transport ministry figures. Around 5,000 returned by plane on Wednesday and Thursday, Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev said on Thursday, adding that double the number of flights were expected on Friday. National carrier El Al said that it would operate "recovery flights" from Europe, the United States, and Thailand.

Burlington Skyway lane closures scheduled again this weekend

Burlington Skyway lane closures are scheduled again this weekend. By the end of the week, the City of Burlington expects a response from Ontario's Ministry of Transportation on outstanding requests to help deal with local traffic issues resulting from lane closures over several weekends this summer. The scheduled closure of two Skyway bridge QEW Niagara-bound lanes from 10 p.m. on Friday, June 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, June 23 is part of a project to rehabilitate the bridge. Work includes removal and replacement of asphalt and waterproofing, and concrete repairs. After a closure over Mother's Day weekend in May apparently contributed to severe traffic congestion in several of Burlington's major corridors, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward wrote a letter to Minister of Transportation Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria with four requests to help Burlington deal with effects of the work: Roman Drobot, a spokesperson for the mayor's office, said on Tuesday, June 17, the city expected a response by the end of the week to three requests that remained outstanding — public notice of all closures in advance, signage at on-ramps and funding traffic patrols as needed. 'Only one weekend at a time is currently listed on (Ministry of Transportation information website) 511,' Drobot said. He said city staff were working with ministry staff on mitigation methods and the ministry had taken some action, with additional signage on the QEW. 'We are grateful because that reduced traffic impact (the weekend of June 6-9) during the closures,' Drobot said. The city has previously confirmed its staff have been provided an unofficial list of the weekend closures, which included four additional ones after this weekend's closures. The lane closures involve two Niagara-bound lanes at a time, with two other lanes in the same direction remaining open. Ministry staff did not respond to requests for comment by deadline. Const. Jeff Dillon, Halton Regional Police Services spokesperson, confirmed local traffic units are aware of lane closures scheduled June 20-23. 'There aren't any special, or specific, traffic responses planned, however our officers will respond to any traffic concerns that may arise,' Dillon said. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the Ontario Provincial Police's Highway Safety Division is aware of two previous weekends of lane closures and more planned for July and August, and resulting traffic delays. 'We ensure officers are nearby to respond to calls quickly, if and when they arise,' Schmidt said. According to a notice posted by the City of Burlington, the closure could impact Burlington Transit bus service and users should check MyRide for real time bus information. Work to lower highway continues under often-hit Brantford bridge

A large slab of concrete is seen on Highway 403 in Brantford after falling from the Wayne Gretzky Parkway bridge on May 9, 2022. (Dan Lauckner/CTV News) Drivers travelling through the Brantford area may need to factor in a little extra commute time as work by the Ministry of Transportation continues along a portion of Highway 403. Last year, the ministry announced plans to improve the road and off-ramps between Rest Acres Road and Garden Ave. That work included lowering the highway's westbound lanes at Wayne Gretzky Parkway to increase vehicle clearance at the overpass. The bridge has been hit by passing vehicles several times, including in December 2021, January 2022, May 2022. The latest incident happened in on March 10 of this year when the bridge was struck by a transport truck driver. The Ontario Provincial Police said the vehicle was hauling an excavator and the boom had been left in a raised position. Although no one was hurt, one vehicle's windshield was broken by falling debris from the bridge. The truck driver was charged with driving while suspended, operating a commercial motor vehicle with an unsecured load and having an over-width and over-height load. The unidentified company was also charged with allowing operation of a commercial motor vehicle with its load not secured, permitting an over-width load, permitting an over-height vehicle and allowing an unlicensed person to drive a commercial motor vehicle. What can drivers expect? Ramp closures are now in place at the following ramps: Highway 403 westbound off-ramp to Wayne Gretzky Parkway (from east to north/south ramp) Highway 403 westbound on-ramp from Wayne Gretzky Parkway (from south to west ramp) Highway 403 eastbound on-ramp from Wayne Gretzky Parkway (from north to east ramp) Nightly lane closures are also in effect along the highway in both directions. Drivers travelling over the bridge will also be dealing with slowdowns as the road has been reduced to one lane in each direction. The area is a popular thoroughfare for people living in the area. Many drivers regularly use the route to access the Lynden Park Mall or the newly opened Costco.

Burlington calls on province to address Skyway lane closures

Ministry of Transportation staff said enhanced communication will help inform the public of several weekend lane closures on the Burlington Skyway bridge, expected this summer. But the ministry did not say by deadline if any action will be taken on requests from Burlington's mayor to address local traffic impacts stemming from those closures. 'We've added portable message signs on the medians and additional overhead signs,' ministry spokesperson Tanya Blazina said. 'We have also installed additional ground-mounted signs and detour-route signs to guide travellers to use East Port Drive as an alternate route.' Blazina said an alert banner will be added on the Ontario 511 website and closures will be communicated on the ministry's social media accounts . Burlington Mayor Marianne Meed Ward wrote a letter to Ontario transportation minister Prabmeet Singh Sarkaria , dated May 28, about local impacts of lane closures on the Niagara bound QEW for upgrades to the Skyway Bridge. 'The closure over Mother's Day weekend impacted Burlington significantly,' Meed Ward's letter states. 'The city experienced severe congestion. Residential streets were blocked with bumper-to-bumper traffic. Many of the major corridors were at a standstill. City staff carefully reviewed the traffic over this weekend and concluded that the sole explanation was the Skyway Bridge two-lane closure.' Meed Ward's letter states the ministry provided city staff with a list of proposed upcoming two-lane closures on the Skyway Bridge 'with six weekend closures planned between (May 28) and Labour Day.' The mayor states she appreciates ministry efforts to improve communications, with notices and alerts on overhead highway signage, warning those affected. 'However, my concerns remain about the significant impact these closures will have on Burlington,' Meed Ward states, adding the city anticipates severe local congestion during upcoming lane closures. The mayor requested the ministry: According to Meed Ward's letter, making public the list of planned lane closures will help Burlington residents understand the impact of the closures, and reason for traffic jams on local streets. 'We understand these dates are weather dependent and subject to change. Nevertheless, I ask you to post this list publicly and communicate in advance when there are changes,' Meed Ward states. 'The current communication channels through private correspondence between staff is not transparent and does not promote accountability. Residents are not fully informed, cannot plan their summer strategically and do not understand the root cause of congestion on our roads.' Ministry staff did not respond to questions about the mayor's specific requests by deadline, but noted additional signs warning drivers and directing them to detours. According to ministry staff, ongoing rehabilitation of QEW Niagara bound lanes on the Burlington Skyway bridge includes asphalt and waterproofing removal and replacement, and concrete repairs. Staff said the work is required to extend the bridge's lifespan and improve both pavement condition and lighting. They said two lanes will remain open during closures. Ministry staff did not provide any specific dates for upcoming lane closures. Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. Please try again.
