Algeria Seizes Over 1.23 Million Pills Near Libyan Border

Algerian authorities have seized more than 1.23 million psychotropic pills in a major anti-smuggling operation near the Libyan border, according to the country's Ministry of National Defence. The operation, carried out on Friday, 13 June, took place northeast of In Amenas, a desert region close to the volatile Libya-Algeria frontier. During the sweep, Algerian army units arrested three armed foreign nationals in possession of an FMPK light machine gun, a sniper rifle, and a large quantity of ammunition. The Ministry stated that the troops also confiscated a Toyota Station 4×4 vehicle, a Thuraya satellite phone, two mobile phones, and 1,238,445 pills of the drug pregabalin. The consignment was believed to be prepared for trafficking. In Amenas, situated in a sensitive border zone, has become a focal point for organised crime networks that are believed to exploit regional instability, particularly in Libya and across the Sahel. Authorities in Algiers have voiced growing concern over the increasing scale and sophistication of cross-border smuggling operations. The seizure comes amid growing calls for enhanced joint action between Algeria and Libya. At a bilateral customs cooperation meeting held in December, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to tackling illicit trade, particularly in drugs, money, and pharmaceuticals. In response to escalating narcotics trafficking, Algeria has recently amended its legislation to include the death penalty for drug-related crimes that result in death or cause significant harm to public health. The law also applies in aggravated circumstances where trafficking presents a major threat to society. Algerian officials continue to stress the serious economic and health consequences of cross-border smuggling, particularly in light of regional instability and weak law enforcement structures on the Libyan side of the border. China Ramps Up Military Incursions Around Taiwan, Tensions Rise

New Delhi: Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence said it detected six Chinese Naval vessels operating around its territorial waters as of 6 am (local time) on Sunday. Contrary to the usual, no Chinese aircraft were detected in this timeframe. In a post on X, the MND said, " 6 PLAN ships operating around Taiwan were detected as of 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. Earlier on Saturday, Taiwan's Ministry of National Defence said it detected eight Chinese Naval vessels operating around its territorial waters. In a post on X, the MND said, "8 PLAN ships operating around Taiwan were detected as of 6 a.m. (UTC+8) today. Illustration of flight path is not provided due to no PLA aircraft operating around Taiwan were detected during this timeframe." Meanwhile, the US Navy is intensifying its global war game exercises to counter a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan, aiming to make the self-ruled island "a very difficult target to take," US Acting Chief of Naval Operations Admiral James Kilby said during a congressional testimony on Wednesday. According to a report by the Taipei Times, Admiral Kilby testified before the US House Armed Services Committee that the US Navy has been conducting regular simulations, primarily at the Naval War College, focused on deterring Beijing's military ambitions in the Indo-Pacific. "Our focus is on long-range strike capabilities, countering China's command and surveillance systems, terminal ship defence, contested logistics, and unconventional maritime denial strategies," Kilby said. He added that the Navy is also experimenting with new technologies in each area, with increased urgency following recent consultations with Indo-Pacific Commander Admiral Samuel Paparo and Pacific Fleet Commander Admiral Stephen Koehler. On whether deploying a USD 13 billion aircraft carrier or autonomous systems would be more effective for Taiwan's defence, Kilby mentioned that drones would be a preferred choice. "If I could put those drones on Taiwan, I'd put them on Taiwan," he said, indicating a shift toward unmanned assets in countering China's expanding military capabilities.

Border issues with Thailand require patience and determination, says Cambodian PM

PHNOM PENH (Khmer Times): Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stated that resolving border issues is complex and must be approached with patience and persistence and through legal and diplomatic channels. On Saturday (May 31), he spoke to about 1,600 Cambodians living, working, and studying in Tokyo, Japan. The Prime Minister emphasised that border demarcation should be managed by the countries' designated border committees rather than through military conflict. Referring to the clash that occurred on Wednesday, he warned that if the situation had not been addressed quickly, the death toll could have risen from one to potentially one hundred, and the conflict could have spread along the entire border. He also indicated that taking border disputes to international court should be considered only as a last resort, stating, 'Once it reaches the court, negotiations will no longer be possible.' Furthermore, the Prime Minister strongly disapproved of opposition claims suggesting that the Royal Government allowed the Thai army to fire on Cambodian troops in order to distract the public from online crime issues. He condemned attempts to demoralise Cambodian forces during this sensitive time. 'This is a moment for national unity,' he said. 'We must support and uplift our soldiers who are risking their lives to protect the territorial integrity of our homeland,' questioning the opposition's intentions behind their efforts to sow division between army generals and frontline soldiers. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Royal Government's commitment, alongside the Ministry of National Defence and the Cambodian Armed Forces, to peacefully resolve border disputes and to safeguard Cambodia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. - Khmer Times
