National Maritime Navigation Centre to strengthen UAE's leadership in maritime sector
Suhail bin Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, highlighted that the Cabinet's decision to establish the National Maritime Navigation Centre reflects the UAE's strategic vision for developing an integrated sustainable and innovative maritime ecosystem and reinforcing the country's position as a leading global maritime hub. He explained that the National Maritime Navigation Centre, affiliated with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, represents a significant addition to the ongoing development of the UAE's maritime infrastructure. The new centre will manage and operate the Integrated National Maritime System for monitoring maritime traffic and oversee the National Maritime Single Window, which aims to unify procedures and enhance the efficiency of maritime operations. He affirmed that the centre serves as an advanced platform for cooperation among the various entities involved in the maritime sector, thereby strengthening efforts to monitor and protect the sector and elevate its role as a strategic contributor to the national economy. In this context, he expressed sincere gratitude and appreciation to all stakeholders in the UAE maritime sector for their support, collaboration, and dedicated efforts that contributed to the establishment of the centre. He emphasised that this achievement reflects the spirit of integration and collective action that defines the government work system in the UAE. The Minister said, 'The National Maritime Navigation Centre represents a significant step that will enhance the safety and security of the maritime sector, prevent harmful practices through leveraging high-tech solutions, and propel scientific research and studies that can shape policies and inform decision-making. Furthermore, the centre will significantly drive coordination among concerned entities and unify national policies and legislation, ensuring compliance with the highest global maritime safety and security standards, improving operational efficiency, and reducing regulatory complexities. It will also empower national talents through specialised training and research programmes in maritime fields.' He added, 'This decision reflects our wise leadership's belief that excellence in vital sectors can only be achieved through a systematic institutional approach—one that anticipates the future and transforms challenges into opportunities for growth and innovation. The centre will serve as a national enabler for enhancing the quality of maritime services and achieving integration between maritime development and environmental sustainability.' For his part, Eng. Hassan Al Mansouri, Undersecretary for Infrastructure and Transport Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure, said, 'The centre will contribute to the development of maritime policies in line with international best practices and the implementation of smart monitoring systems and advanced planning tools—enhancing the UAE's ability to lead the future of maritime navigation. The UAE enjoys world-class maritime infrastructure and a strategic geographic location at the heart of global trade routes. Through this centre, we will strengthen the country's role in supporting supply chains, facilitating international trade, and empowering a new generation of qualified national talents to lead the maritime sector toward a more sustainable future.'

Saudi Aramco launches Regional Fisheries Development Center in Jubail
DHAHRAN — Saudi Aramco announced on Thursday the launch of the Regional Center for Sustainable Development of Fisheries (RCSDF) on Abu Ali Island in Jubail on the Arabian Gulf coast. The center, the Arabian Gulf Branch, was established in cooperation with the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture. Through this collaboration, Saudi Aramco aims to highlight its investments in citizenship initiatives and its efforts to drive economic growth, support local fishermen and their livelihoods, build expertise, and adopt the best practices to enhance production and cultivate fish of marketable sizes that can compete globally. The center is part of the company's broader efforts to protect marine life in the Arabian Gulf. It involves the establishment of a fish hatchery on Abu Ali Island, designed to produce local fish species that have experienced population declines due to fishing practices and to release them into Gulf waters. The center's operations are designed to encompass the complete fish life cycle within designated tanks, from broodstock for egg production to larval rearing using plankton produced on-site and finally to the release of juvenile fish into the Arabian Gulf. The hatchery employs advanced aquaculture technologies to ensure fish health, and it utilizes top-tier water recycling techniques to enhance performance and meet the company's circular economy objectives. The project aligns with Saudi Aramco's mangrove plantation initiative, under which more than 43 million trees have been planted to date. Mangrove forests provide vital nursery habitats for the juvenile fish released into the Gulf, further supporting the sustainability of marine ecosystems. Commenting on the center, Salem Al-Huraish, senior vice president of Community Services at Aramco, said: 'The center supports local economies through responsible and sustainable practices and contributes to improving the marine ecosystem. It also stems from Aramco's commitment to sustainability, as it aspires to achieve a positive impact on biodiversity.' He said that the company believes this center will make a significant contribution to the Arabian Gulf ecosystem, while simultaneously aligning with the objectives of the desired national aquaculture vision. UAE chairs Global Energy Efficiency Alliance
The UAE, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI), announced that it is chairing the Global Energy Efficiency Alliance (GEEA) for the coming years, following the formation of GEEA's General Secretariat. The UAE announced its intention to establish GEEA during the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, in support of the UAE Consensus and the global goal of doubling the energy efficiency improvement rate, from the historical average of 2 percent to over 4 percent annually by 2030. GEEA reaffirms the UAE's commitment to placing energy efficiency at the forefront of the international energy and climate agenda. This effort comes at a critical moment, as the world is currently off track, the global energy efficiency improvement rate remains below 1.5 percent annually, and at this pace, the world will fall short of achieving its decarbonisation and net-zero targets. GEEA complements other high-level initiatives such as the Mission Efficiency partnership, the G20 Energy Transitions Working Group, and regional clean energy platforms. Together, these combined efforts must be mutually reinforcing, not fragmented—ensuring that knowledge, finance, and best practices flow across borders and sectors. Through chairing this ambitious alliance, the UAE underscores its commitment to spearheading international efforts to enhance energy efficiency across various sectors. The UAE aims to strengthen collaboration among governments, the private sector, financial institutions, and research and innovation centers, thereby accelerating the transition toward more efficient and sustainable energy systems. In this context, Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEI, emphasised that the UAE's chairing of GEEA reflects the international community's confidence in the country's ability to lead and coordinate effectively. He noted that GEEA will play a pivotal role in policy development, knowledge and expertise exchange, enhancing access to finance and innovation, and enabling member states to achieve their national and international energy efficiency goals. Al Olama said, 'This alliance serves as a practical and inclusive platform to accelerate the achievement of the global target to double the rate of energy efficiency by 2030, in line with the historic UAE Consensus. We welcome all partners from around the world to join and collaborate for a more efficient and sustainable future. GEEA aims to drive transformative improvements in energy consumption efficiency across key sectors, including buildings, transportation, and industry.' Last February, the UAE hosted a high-level roundtable during the World Government Summit in Dubai, where the general framework of the alliance was discussed with several countries, international organisations, private sector entities, and financial institutions.

Jordan, Iraq in positive talks to extend oil import agreement — ministry
AMMAN — Jordan has officially requested an extension of its memorandum of understanding with Iraq for the import of crude oil, according to Iman Awad, Director of Oil and Gas at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The current agreement is due to expire on June 26, 2025, according to Al Mamlaka TV. Awad said that discussions between the two sides are progressing smoothly and in a positive atmosphere, with no obstacles reported so far. She noted that the memorandum allows for annual renewal, and both countries are working constructively toward its continuation. Under the agreement, Jordanian tankers continue to transport Iraqi crude at the agreed daily rate of 10,000 barrels. The pricing is based on the monthly average price of Brent crude, with a discount of $16 per barrel to account for differences in quality and transport costs. The imported Iraqi oil represents around 7 per cent of Jordan's total oil consumption. Awad added that Jordan is responsible for providing the tanker trucks used to transport the oil from Iraq to the Jordan Petroleum Refinery in Zarqa. Sharif Salim Al-Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has joined African Energy Week (AEW): Invest in African Energies to discuss collaborative opportunities in oil and gas. Taking place on September 29 to October 3 in Cape Town, the event is the premier platform for Africa's energy industry. Al-Olama's participation is expected to open new doors for multilateral deals and partnerships. The UAE has emerged as Africa's largest source of foreign direct investment, with investments from Emirati companies totaling $110 billion between 2019 and 2023. This reflects a broader trend by Emirati companies to expand their portfolios in Africa, with strengthened cooperation set to unlock a wealth of development opportunities for African nations. As African countries pursue new sources of finance to advance projects in oil, gas and logistics, UAE expertise and technology will prove invaluable. During AEW: Invest in African Energies 2025, Al-Olama is expected to share insights into opportunities for UAE-Africa collaboration. Looking to consolidate its position as a major player in Africa's energy landscape, the UAE has strengthened ties with African nations in recent months. A deal signed with Morocco will see the UAE support the development of the Africa-Atlantic gas pipeline – transporting Nigerian gas to North Africa and then on to Europe. The UAE will help mobilize financing for the project through its Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund. As of May 2025, the feasibility and preliminary engineering studies for the pipeline were complete. Agreements have also been signed with Tanzania for the operation and modernization of port infrastructure while the UAE and Kenya signed a landmark comprehensive economic partnership agreement in 2025. The UAE also launched the UAE-Africa Gateway initiative in 2025, aimed at enhancing investment opportunities for Emirati companies in the sub-Saharan African region. The initiative seeks to mobilize private sector investment to advance African projects and strengthen UAE-Africa cooperation. The UAE's state-owned oil and gas companies are also expanding their presence in Africa. Notably, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) is deepening its footprint across the continent, with strategic investments in exploration and infrastructure development. Recent milestones include ADNOC's international arm XRG acquiring a 10% stake in Mozambique's offshore Rovuma Basin Area 4 concession. The acquisition includes stakes in the operational Coral South FLNG project, the planned Coral North FLNG project and the Rovuma LNG projects. Collectively, these projects have a target production capacity of 25 million tons per annum. In Egypt, ADNOC partnered with energy major bp to establish Arcius Energy – a natural gas platform to unlock the country's upstream potential. The platform aligns with ADNOC's international expansion plans. Beyond oil and gas, UAE-based companies have played an instrumental role in strengthening Africa's trade and logistics sector. Companies such as DP World and Abu Dhabi Ports have expanded their presence across the continent. DP World operates six African ports while Abu Dhabi Ports have recently extended operations into Guinea, Egypt and Angola. In the clean energy space, Emirati companies are leading projects in solar, green hydrogen and power. Notably, Masdar has committed $2 billion to renewable energy projects in Africa through 2030, unlocking significant opportunities for African countries. AMEA Power is investing in a series of renewable energy projects across the continent, including $620 million in a 300MW wind project in Ethiopia; a 120 million solar project in South Africa; a 1GW green hydrogen development in Mauritania; two battery storage projects in South Africa; a 150 MW solar plant in Angola; among others. Currently, the company has more than 2.6 GW of clean energy projects either in operation of under construction in Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Togo and Tunisia.
