'Suicide prevention baton made me feel less alone'
A woman who lost her husband to suicide has said carrying a symbolic baton representing mental wellbeing helped her to feel less isolated. Samantha Southern, from Blackpool, who took part in the Baton of Hope tour in 2023, said it was the first time in years she had not felt alone and the event had brought her "connection". Organised by the suicide prevention charity, bereaved families are preparing to carry the baton through 20 locations in the UK again in a bid to challenge stigma and campaign for practical change. The 2025 tour begins in Blackpool in September. The baton is carried like an Olympic torch, passed from person to person, being held by 100 local people who each have a direct connection to suicide. Baton-bearers will walk through Blackpool, Fylde and Wyre. They will pass local services that can offer support for mental and physical health. They will then tour the country, including visiting Leeds, London, Bournemouth and Jersey. Mike McCarthy, co-founder of The Baton Of Hope, said: "The idea is that people who have been bereaved by suicide or survived a suicide attempt find some comfort by being involved." Suicide is the biggest killer of men under the age of 50 in the UK, according to the Samaritans. Mr McCarthy said he believed a change in strategy was needed. "Suicide is preventable, he said. "Whatever we have been doing over the last twenty years hasn't worked." He said he was motivated to start the charity after his son Ross took his own life. "He wrote a long goodbye letter and one of the things that he said in that letter was please fight for mental health, the support is just not there," he said. "If he could look down and see what we are trying to do in his name, and the name of all of the people we have lost to suicide, I'm sure he would think 'I'm proud of what you are trying to do'." The campaign is being supported by the Blackpool-based Empowerment Charity, where Ms Southern is the Solace Suicide Prevention and Bereavement Manager. Her husband Glen died in 2020 and she walked with the baton during the Baton of Hope tour in 2023. "It was the first time in two-to-three years that I hadn't felt as alone," she said. "Being with a community of people who just understood and got me. I think it brings connection." Blackpool Councillor Jo Farrell, said: "It is an honour for Blackpool to host the launch of the Baton of Hope 2025 tour. "This powerful movement shines a vital light on suicide awareness and reminds us that behind every statistic is a real person." The 2025 tour sets off from the Village Hotel in Blackpool on Monday 1 September at 08.00 BST. If you have been affected by any of the issues raised in this story you can visit BBC Action Line. Cowboys fans are having a change of heart around head coach Brian Schottenheimer
Back in January of this year, when the Dallas Cowboys needed a new head coach after Mike McCarthy's departure, fans had their own favorites for the job. Suffice it to say, very few fans had Brian Schottenheimer at the top of their list. When Jerry Jones decided that the Cowboys offensive coordinator was the man for the job, there was a tremendous negative backlash from the fanbase. Many thought the Jones family was just going cheap because Schottenheimer would be a first-time head coach. Others thought Jerry was just hiring a puppet, someone who would carry out his wishes. Advertisement In general, it was a time when most thought - what are the Cowboys doing? Fast forward roughly six months, and the feeling is very different. Schottenheimer came in and immediately sounded like a head coach. His first press conference was a little bit of an eye-opener for the fans as we heard a confident and somewhat inspirational coach speaking. He followed that up by bonding with the players and putting his own stamp on the culture. That was fine, but what has really moved the needle are the moves the Cowboys have made since his hire. The roster of assistant coaches he put together looks extremely promising. The Cowboys also made more roster acquisitions through free agency and trades, and by all accounts had a strong draft. The Cowboys under Schottenheimer, seem, dare I say, competent. The head coach seems to have a plan that is being executed, and he seems to have the full buy-in of the players. And maybe the fans, too. Advertisement We asked you to grade the job Schottenheimer has done since his appointment as head coach. 88% of respondents gave him either an 'a' or 'b' grade. That's high praise. Obviously none of this will matter once the games begin. That is when we will measure the true impact of Schottenheimer as head coach. Right now, the oddsmakers are still not believers. FanDuel has the Cowboys at +480 to win the NFC East, far behind the Eagles and the Commanders. Schottenheimer has a lot of work to do to bring the Cowboys back to where they are contenders, but his start seems promising. For more NFL bets, visit our partners at FanDuel. Advertisement More from

Aaron Rodgers Explains Why He Signed with Steelers: ‘It Starts with Mike Tomlin'
PITTSBURGH — Future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers revealed during his introductory press conference with the Pittsburgh Steelers that Mike Tomlin was the driving force to why he signed with the club. 'I think it starts with Mike Tomlin,' Rodgers said. 'I've been a fan of his for a long time. There's a few iconic franchises in the NFL. I played for one of them for 18 years. This is another one of those. There's something special about — obviously this area, so many great quarterbacks are from Pittsburgh.' Advertisement During the free agent process, Rodgers realized that his options were either playing for the Steelers or retirement. He did not think it would be worth it to play, unless it was for Tomlin. 'I appreciate the conversations with other organizations, for sure. But, again, I've said it. When it came between me and Mike. I made it to where, as I was going through with my personal stuff, there was no other option. It was here and not play,' Rodgers stated. Rodgers also credited former Green Bay Packers head coach and Greenfield native Mike McCarthy for introducing Pittsburgh's blue-collar work ethic culture to him. In addition to several other Western Pa. natives or people with ties to the Steelers organization. Advertisement 'I feel like Pittsburgh has been a part of my career from the beginning, playing for Mike McCarthy for 13 years, having Tom Clements — or Tommy Clements, depending on how old you are — as my quarterback coach forever, Dom Capers, Kevin Greene, Darren Perry, Ben McAdoo, Frank Cignetti, Luke Getsy. I don't want to forget anybody, but a lot of 'Yinzers' in my life.' Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has extensively shared his appreciation for Aaron Rodgers in the past, and vice versa. 'I'm a big Mike Tomlin fan,' Rodgers said in 2021. 'I have been for a long time. I like the way he speaks about his team. I like the way that he goes about his business. I like his confidence. I've heard nothing but good things from guys that have played there.' Rodgers said he had a great conversation with Tomlin before signing. One of the best he's ever had in his career. Advertisement 'A big attraction was Mike Tomlin. I've gone against him over the years. … The last Sunday that I called him was some of the coolest conversations I've had,' he said. Tomlin looks forward to having Rodgers lead his unit this season. It really was a no-brainer for him to bring the 41-year-old QB to Pittsburgh. 'I mean, read his resume. We're excited about him being here, he's excited about being here,' Tomlin said. 'But we'll make no bold predictions; We're just going to roll our sleeves up and go to work and let our efforts do the talking' Alan Saunders and Brendan Howe provided reporting from Pittsburgh.
