California sewage crisis bubbles up in key House race

A cross-border sewage crisis affecting Southern California could play a role in a prominent congressional race, where a Republican challenger has become a national figure on the issue. Jim Desmond, a San Diego County supervisor, has been sounding the alarm recently on Fox News and other conservative outlets about the untreated sewage that's been flowing from the Tijuana River in Mexico to the Pacific Ocean, contaminating the water and sickening residents. At the same time, he's seeking to unseat Rep. Mike Levin, accusing the Democratic incumbent of not doing enough to protect residents. 'We need to put more leverage on Mexico,' Desmond said in a recent interview. Advertisement Levin counters that Desmond is a Johnny-come-lately on the matter, though he has praised the Trump administration for taking action.

GOP budget plan, dubbed the ‘Big, Beautiful Bill,' ignites debate on debt and financial stability

(FOX 5/KUSI) — The Republican budget plan, dubbed the 'big, beautiful bil,l' passed the House of Representatives by a single vote. The 1,000-page, multi-trillion-dollar budget proposes deep cuts to services and tax cuts across the board, but economists fear the GOP and Trump's tax plan stacks even more debt onto future generations. 'When you factor the spending cuts, we will be adding $3.2 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years,' said Professor Alan Gin from the Knauss School of Business at USD. Gin has been digging through the Warton School of Business's analysis of the bill, and he worries the interest payments could threaten the stability of the US financial system. 'So far, we've been able to get loans to cover the excess. The worry is will people keep funding us then to continue the deficit spending,' Gin said. 'They are taking away people's health care and they are taking people's food,' said Congressman Mike Levin, who represents California's 49th District. FOX 5/KUSI reached out to a supporter of the bill, Republican Congressman Darrell Issa, but he was unable to comment. Levin voted against the bill, along with every Democrat in the House. 'The president ran on populism, he ran on no cuts to Medicaid and Medicare, and that's the exact opposite of what's happening. We are seeing massive cuts and it's going to benefit his rich donors,' said Levin. Levin said the bill is unlike any other he has ever seen during his time in the House. Now, the Senate will consider the bill. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Congressman requests federal funds for surveillance towers to boost maritime border security in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — As Coast Guard interdictions off the coast of San Diego continue, a local lawmaker is asking Congress for federal funds to build autonomous surveillance towers in an effort to curb future boat smuggling incidents. Rep. Mike Levin held a news conference on Monday where he announced he is asking Congress for $60 million in federal funding to purchase autonomous surveillance towers (ASTs) for the maritime borders along the San Diego County coastline that would be equipped with cameras, radar and infrared technology to identify and help intercept maritime threats, like migrant smuggling. Trump administration has deported 38,000 Mexicans Rep. Levin also called for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, in consultation with the Coast Guard, to better detail to Congress their personnel and equipment needs. Just in the past few weeks in San Diego County, three separate boats were intercepted carrying suspected undocumented migrants in the same weekend off the coast of San Diego, as well as an incident at Torrey Pines State Beach where three people died, several were injured and a child remains missing at sea. Five people were charged in San Diego federal court in connection with that smuggling attempt. 'I'm grateful to the brave first responders and law enforcement who responded swiftly to last week's incident,' said Rep. Mike Levin. 'This incident makes it abundantly clear we need bipartisan reform to fix our broken immigration system. That's why I'm doing everything I can to obtain funding, resources, and technology to secure our maritime borders, which is critically important in reducing drug and human trafficking. I'm working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to do everything I can to advance common sense reforms and ensure our coastal borders are protected.'
