Former MKP secretary-general Shivambu announces ‘consultations' to form new party

Former MK Party (MKP) secretary-general Floyd Shivambu has announced the beginning of a process to form a new political outfit after he was accused of trying to overthrow former president Jacob Zuma. Speaking during a press briefing at the Mhulu Luxury Boutique Hotel in Midrand, Gauteng, on Thursday, Shivambu said: 'Over the next few months, we will be consulting all the traditional and church leaders... We will be seeking the wisdom of ordinary South Africans, including Michael Nkuna, Irvin Khoza, Patrice Motsepe... on the need to form a new political party. If yes, what should be the values of that political party and what should distinguish it from other political parties.' However, Shivambu insisted he was not leaving his most recent party. 'I have not resigned from uMkhonto weSizwe. I will never resign from uMkhonto weSizwe,' he said. Shivambu said any consultation process also needed to answer how a new political party should be funded. 'We do not want to do that as a personal project or a group of friends. We will be going to the ground to speak to the people. Next week, we are going to announce the leadership core of the consultations.' During the briefing, Shivambu said he had been accused of trying to overthrow Zuma as MK Party leader. He claimed that a 'bizarre and fake intelligence report' had been produced and that he was accused of having 'supernatural' powers to 'make people disappear'. 'There is nothing I can do privately that I will not accept publicly.' Shivambu's latest move comes after a series of internal conflicts within the MKP. Following a revolt by traditional leaders and a Mpumalanga faction, he was ousted as the party's sixth secretary-general. The former EFF policy strongman was axed from the party after he visited Malawian fugitive Shepherd Bushiri's church over Easter, a move that was seen as straying from the party's official stance, ultimately leading to his dismissal. Speculation had been rife that Shivambu was leaving the MKP after he called an unsanctioned media briefing on Wednesday.

South Africa's Kyalami circuit says the FIA has approved upgrades which would let it host Formula 1

MIDRAND, South Africa (AP) — Formula 1 could be a step closer to holding a race in Africa again after the owner of the Kyalami circuit in South Africa said Wednesday that the sport's governing body had approved upgrades to the track. A statement from the circuit said that the FIA had 'accepted final design proposals' for work which would upgrade Kyalami from the FIA's Grade 2 to the Grade 1 status required for F1. It added that Kyalami has been given three years to complete the upgrades and that 'selected works' will be carried out only once Kyalami has been selected to host F1. 'Today, we turn the page to a bold new chapter for Kyalami. We are ready for the return of Formula 1 to African soil,' circuit owner Toby Venter said. Kyalami hosted the most recent F1 race in Africa in 1993 but other countries are also interested in bringing the series back to the continent. Rwanda is working on its own project and Morocco reportedly has plans too. ___ AP auto racing:

Tebogo Thobejane pleas for privacy as ex-boyfriend's attempted murder bail hearing postponed

It was yet another brief appearance at the Alexandra Magistrates' Court on Monday, 19 May. Appearing for the second time in the case of his alleged plot to murder socialite and actress Tebogo Thobejane, Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala stood bold in an all-black outfit. Matlala was arrested on 14 May in Midrand by a crime intelligence unit after a two-year-long investigation into an incident that took place at a Sandton club. In October 2023, Tebogo was outside Saints Champagne Lounge with her friend and her driver when three hit-men fired multiple shots at them, leaving her unscathed but her friend wheelchair-bound. Two of the hitmen, Musa Kekana and Floyd Mabusela, were then arrested about a year later, marking a breakthrough in the case. In a recent statement by Tebogo, she laments how difficult the past two years have been. 'One of the hardest parts of this entire experience has been facing the people who were with me that night - the ones who were hurt alongside me. I've had to find the strength to express my sorrow to their families, and to live with the pain that they were affected because of a situation tied to me. It's something that stays with me everyday.' She adds that she's on a journey of healing and is thankful for the grace and support she's received. 'Despite everything, I remain incredibly grateful to the family for showing me grace, compassion and not placing blame where there is already so much hurt. I will continue to pray for them and support their healing too.' More than anything, she's hopeful that justice will prevail. Meanwhile, the man behind it all is set to remain in police custody until his formal bail hearing set to sit on 30 May. Both the state and Matlala's attorneys agreed upon this in the last appearance due to electricity problems. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) confirms the postponement. 'The Alexandra Magistrates' Court has postponed Vusimuzi Matlala's (49) bail application to 30 May 2025, for a formal bail hearing, following an agreement between both parties due to the unavailability of electricity.' The NPA concluded by saying that the accused will remain in custody pending his formal bail application. It was also revealed that Matlala would be represented by a new legal team. Speaking to Drum on the sidelines, Matlala's previous attorney advocate Cyril Mlotshwa confirmed that Matlala's family have appointed a new instructing attorney. 'We are from outside the jurisdiction (KZN) so we are not familiar with these surroundings, so it makes sense.'
