Richard Gere on Actors Planning Sex Scenes Without Intimacy Coordinators: ‘In the '80s We Were Comfortable That Way'
In the past 10 years or so, intimacy coordinators have become a go-to role in film sets where love scenes are being filmed. The urgency of having them on set greatly increased in the wake of the #MeToo movement that rocked Hollywood in late 2017. But some who've been working in the industry for quite some time have been skeptical of their utility. Sean Bean, for one, said that he thought intimacy coordinators ruined the 'spontaneity' and 'chemistry' between actors. Now Richard Gere has joined their ranks. In an interview with The Wrap about the Paramount+ spy series 'The Agency,' Gere spoke alongside his fellow actors on the show Michael Fassbender, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Jeffrey Wright. Fassbender and Turner-Smith play lovers, and both actors strongly endorsed the role of their intimacy coordinator on set. More from IndieWire David S. Goyer Says Warner Bros. Execs Were Upset It Takes an Hour to See Christian Bale in the Batsuit in 'Batman Begins' Allison Williams Loves How a Particular 'Girls' Meme Took on New Life with the HBO Max Rebrand Fassbender said, 'A lot of the time, directors won't say what they want you to do and you're left to your own devices. But it's kind of like doing a fight sequence now. It's like, 'OK, are you comfortable with me touching your breast or ass?' Or whatever it is. The guidelines are down and then you can shoot super fast.' To that, Turner-Smith added that intimacy coordinators 'should just be there for [actors], like a stunt coordinator. You would not do an unrehearsed stunt.' The Wrap's interviewer Steve Pond then noted to Gere how different this approach is from when the actor was in a number of steamy movies such as 'An Officer and a Gentleman' and 'American Gigolo.' 'I don't think it would have worked then, to tell you the truth,' Gere said, noting that he's never had Fassbender's experience with directors who give no more direction for sex scenes than 'Off you go, guys.' Fassbender also said that he had never felt comfortable discussing the choreography of sex scenes with his scene partner beforehand, and that having the intermediary of the intimacy coordinator helps. 'See, in the '80s we were comfortable that way,' Gere then said, about discussing the mechanics of a sex scene with the actor you're having the scene with. It's an intriguing moment in the interview, and it speaks greatly to how things have changed on set in the past decade. That said, there are still some rising actors who have elected to go without intimacy coordinators. Mikey Madison caused a stir by refusing a intimacy coordinator for her many sex scenes in 'Anora.' 'I was always comfortable, and I also think because Ani was too,' Madison said last fall to The New York Times. 'To me it was never a thought in my head to be nervous or anything.' Her director, Sean Baker, said that he feels intimacy coordinators should be there on a case-by-case basis. Famously, for 'Anora,' he and his wife Samantha Quan acted out the intimate scenes in question for Madison and her scene partners in the best picture winning film before the cameras started rolling. For Gere's part, he has an echo in Michael Douglas, who has said he thinks intimacy coordinators on set are another way to 'take control away from filmmakers.' Meanwhile, Kim Basinger said, 'I can't imagine having somebody come up to me and say, 'Do you mind if they put their hand here?'' And director Mia Hansen-Love suggested intimacy coordinators are 'virtue police.' On the other hand, Michelle Williams found the experience of working with one to be 'extremely worthwhile.' The Agency: Central Intelligence Season 2: Everything We Know So Far
All right, operatives: Time for your next mission. More from TVLine Yvonne Strahovski Makes Us Wonder: Did The Handmaid's Tale Finale Hint at a Pairing That Was There All Along? Criminal Minds: The Surprising Story Behind That Shocking Will Scene The Last of Us Season 3: Is Pedro Pascal Gone for Good? Here's What the EPs Say The Agency: Central Intelligence — formerly known as The Agency — is currently in production on Season 2. The Paramount+ series stars Michael Fassbender as Martian, a Central Intelligence Agency agent abruptly pulled out of an extended assignment in Ethiopia. When he's returned to the CIA's London Station, he struggles with his ongoing love for an Ethiopian woman named Sami (played by Jodie Turner-Smith), who didn't know he was a spy… but who has intrigue aplenty of her own. The series is inspired by France's The Bureau. Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, who wrote and executive-produced Season 1, will be back for the sophomore run. We'll add any and all pertinent information to this post as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, it's your duty to scan the dossier below and get up to speed on the highly addictive spy thriller. Per Paramount+, the Season 2 cast includes Michael Fassbender (who plays Martian), Jeffrey Wright (Henry), Jodie Turner-Smith (Sami), Katherine Waterston (Naomi), Harriest Sansom Harris (Dr. Blake), John Magaro (Owen), Saura Lightfoot-Leon (Danny), Andrew Brooke (Grandpa), India Fowler (Poppy), Reza Brojerdi (Reza), Alex Reznik (Coyote) and Richard Gere (Bosko). As befits its title, there's little intel out now about The Agency: Central Intelligence's second season. But we'll be sure to update this post as soon as our informants hear anything. While Paramount+ hasn't yet released an official Season 2 synopsis, safe to say: Martian will have a lot on his hands when the new season gets underway, thanks to his agreeing to be a double agent for the United Kingdom's MI6. (What else could he do?! He did it to save Sami!) The move surely will sour Martian's relationship with Henry, as Wright noted in an interview with our sister site The Hollywood Reporter. 'Over the course of the first season, there's this relationship, this bond between the two of them that's been established. There's a mutual respect and there's this reciprocal need and trust, but you begin to see a bit of doubt creep in from Henry's perspective,' he said. 'As we go on, we'll begin to explore whether that crack widens and what is revealed inside should be fun.' As of now, there is no official release date for The Agency: Central Intelligence Season 2. We'll update this post as soon as we have scheduling information. Production on the show's sophomore run got underway in London in May 2025. No word yet on how many episodes Season 2 will have; we'll update this post when we know. For context: Season 1 of the drama consisted of 10 hour-long episodes. There's no trailer yet for The Agency: Central Intelligence Season 2. But we'll add the video to this post as soon as it becomes available. KUNG FURY Director Teases 'Fantasy Punk' Madness with New Movie DRAGONLORD, a Mix of HE-MAN, STAR WARS, and LORD OF THE RINGS — GeekTyrant
David Sandberg, the mad genius behind the wild action film Kung Fury , is back with something wild, weird, and completely his own. While fans are still waiting for the long-delayed Kung Fury 2 starring Michael Fassbender and Arnold Schwarzenegger (which remains stuck in legal limbo), the Swedish filmmaker is prepping his next project. His next project is a 'fantasy punk' film titled Dragonlord , and it sounds like a genre blender cranked to eleven. Sandberg told Variety, 'It's a really fun, really rich world with a lot of funny characters. It's tonally similar to Kung Fury.' He went on to describe the film as 'a crazy mishmash of stuff,' adding, 'There's no movie that I can think of that's exactly like it. But yeah, it's like He-Man mixed with Star Wars and Lord of the Rings and Mad Max and also Ninja Turtles … but it's definitely gonna feel super different, I think, from anything.' Well, that sounds insane! If that laundry list of inspirations doesn't raise an eyebrow, just wait until you hear what the movie's actually about. In Dragonlord , Sandberg will star as the title character, "a treasure-obsessed hunter whose best friend is a Tyrannosaurus Rex called Blaze Falcon. Rather than hunt for yet more treasure, however, Blaze just wants to hang out and play video games, but when he's kidnapped by the evil Dreadmancer, Dragonlord must pull together an Avengers-like team of bonkers heroes to save his dino buddy." This new project is clearly another trip into Sandberg's nostalgic, synth-drenched brain, a place where '80s action tropes crash into Saturday morning cartoons, all tied together with lo-fi VFX and tongue-in-cheek storytelling. It completely makes sense from the guy who brought us Kung Fury, which launched his career and took the internet by storm with its over-the-top blend of time travel, kung fu, and Nazis. Kung Fury 2 , the feature-length sequel starring Fassbender and Schwarzenegger, has been completed since 2019 but has yet to be released due to legal complications with investors. It's unclear when, or if, the film will see the light of day, but Sandberg seems ready to shift focus and energy into this new chaotic fantasyverse. Dragonlord doesn't have a release date yet, but when it is released, we can expect something colorful, unhinged, and unlike anything else in theaters. Or streaming services. Or your dreams.

Rumours of more filming in Woodley circulate
Rumours of future filming across the Woodley area have been circulating as an increasing film presence has been seen across Berkshire this month. TV crews were spotted in multiple locations for the filming of the second season of the American TV drama 'The Agency'. The TV show, produced by local celeb George Clooney, stars multiple award-winning actors including Michael Fassbender and Richard Gere. The Reading Chronicle visited the film set, where several Woodley residents offered up their homes for scenes in the new season of the TV show. According to a crew member, the location scouts have chosen the Reading/Woodley area due to its proximity to Shinfield Studios. Although unable to confirm which location, it was stated that further filming will take place in the area in the near future. Berkshire has become a popular destination for the filming of Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows over the past 20 years. The locations provide more discretion than if a scene was filmed in the middle of a London neighbourhood. At the beginning of May, TV crews were also spotted in The Oracle Shopping Centre in Reading where they choose the space to film an airport scene. The town centre shopping centre made a perfect alternative to a busy departure lounge where security would be the major issue.

Could Nicaragua Be the Next 'It' Destination?
'The dried fruit alone…' My friend Kim's eyes fluttered closed as she recalled her recent visit to a tiny resort on a private island in Nicaragua. 'It tastes like candy.' Kim, a fashion editor whose spot-on taste dictates a good half of my clothing purchases, library holds, and video streams, now had the fix to my family's post-White Lotus spring break problem. We wanted to go to Costa Rica, following in the footsteps of seemingly everybody else we know—but given the Costa craze, the shortest flight we could find involved a nine-hour layover in Winnipeg. A trip to Nicaragua, Costa Rica's northern neighbor, was a little more realistic. Once a magnet for intrepid backpackers and surfers who were willing to overlook the nation's political turbulence and the State Department's alarming travel advisory, Nicaragua is shaping up to be the next 'it' destination for those seeking sun and sand. The Nicaraguan travel scene started to take flight right before the pandemic. After a few shaky years, it has caught up to where it left off—and then some. The menus are getting more intricate and delicious. The luxury experiences are getting more luxurious. Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander recently retreated to what Salman Rushdie called a 'beautiful, volcanic country' in his account of a three-week visit. So did Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Margot Robbie went there for a yoga and surfing retreat (and encountered a human foot on the beach, but that's another story). Like electrolytes or Nutrafol, Nicaragua is one of those words that you can't stop hearing about once it lodges in your mind. 'It was a slow recovery, but we're back in the game,' Howard Caulson, the general manager of Jicaro Island Lodge, a thoroughly idyllic getaway, told me. 'Having a time out gave us a chance to up the ante. Beforehand, what we were providing was really good. Now it's even better.'
