Rob Edwards poised for Middlesbrough manager's job after impressing owner
Rob Edwards is poised to take charge at Middlesbrough after impressing the owner, Steve Gibson, in interviews. Only an unforeseen 11th-hour hitch will prevent the 42-year-old former Luton manager being at the Riverside helm when Boro's players start pre-season training at the end of June. Edwards is due to replace Michael Carrick, who was sacked after the team finished a disappointing 10th in the Championship, after seeing off strong competition from the former Nottingham Forest and Leicester manager Steve Cooper and the Sheffield Wednesday head coach Danny Röhl. It is understood Edwards also ranked high on Gibson's shortlist in 2022 when Carrick took over. Bristol City had given serious consideration to recruiting Edwards as Liam Manning's replacement this month but he was attracted by Boro's infrastructure and the chance to reunite with the club's head of football, Kieran Scott, a former colleague at Wolves. Apart from the 35,000-capacity Riverside Stadium, Boro possess Rockliffe Park, an impressive training facility attached to a luxury hotel in a village south of Darlington. Gibson will challenge Edwards to repeat the feat he achieved with Luton in 2023 and lead the club into the Premier League. Luton then finished 18th in the top flight and were arguably a little unlucky to go down after accruing more points than any of the other five teams relegated in the past two seasons. Luton are freshly installed in League One after a disastrous campaign that included Edwards being sacked in January. The former Wales, Aston Villa and Wolves defender coached England's Under-16s before leading Forest Green Rovers to promotion from League Two in 2022. A brief spell at Watford preceded Edwards's installation at Luton and he swiftly choreographed promotion via the playoffs. Gibson is believed to have been impressed by Edwards's extensive knowledge of Boro's squad, broad tactical blueprint, commitment to youth development and candour regarding his final few months at Luton. Middlesbrough could be swapping one ex-England international for another in the dugout if the next Middlesbrough manager odds are anything to go with Steven Gerrard now the favourite to replace Michael Carrick. Carrick was sacked nearly five weeks after Boro finished 10th in the Championship, four points off the play-off positions, confirming the Teessiders to a ninth successive season in the second tier. Carrick guided Boro to the play-offs in his first season but has missed out in the last two seasons and after finishing with fewer points than the previous campaign, coupled with having to watch their local rivals, Sunderland, get promoted, the decision was made to remove the ex-Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder. Assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also left the club, so it is a chance for a clean sweep at the Riverside. Next Middlesbrough Manager Odds Another England star set for the Riverside Steve Cooper was the initial favourite installed by betting sites, and was quickly followed by former Luton boss Rob Edwards but now former England and Liverpool star Steven Gerrard is favourite at odds of just 11/8. Gerrard has been out of work since leaving Saudi side Al-Ettifaq in January, after 18 months in charge. He previously managed Aston Villa and Rangers, where he led the Scottish side Rangers to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years in 2020-21. It is understood that interviews for the vacant role are taking place this week, and whether Gerrard is among those on the shortlist remains to be seen. He admitted in April that he was enjoying taking some time out but will the lure of the Riverside prove too strong? He might not have any experience of the Championship, but second favourite Edwards certainly does, and he has been out of work since the Hatters sacked him in January. The side were just two points above the Championship relegation zone, but that shouldn't overshadow the amazing job he did in taking them up to the Premier League. He guided the side to a play-off final win over Coventry City in May 2023 to see them back in the top-flight for the first time in 30 years, and Middlesbrough would be love to be celebrating that this time next year. Edwards is 5/2 to be the next Middlesbrough manager, but if they do want him then they may face competition with Bristol City also reportedly interested. Edwards has also been installed as the even-money favourite to be the Robins boss. Cooper is next on the list in the next Middlesbrough manager betting market and reports in the north-east suggest he's been shortlisted for an interview. He is another manager who has achieved promotion from the Championship, taking Nottingham Forest up in May 2022. He has been out of work since leaving Leicester in November, but he has admitted he is ready to return to management, albeit with a preference to work abroad. Some betting sites have cut Sean Dyche's odds to 5/1, but there's been no mention of the ex-Everton boss being in the frame in local reporting, despite the success he enjoyed at this level as Burnley manager. Another name linked is Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, who was the favourite for the Southampton job before Will Still was named manager last month. He guided Wednesday to 12th in the league last season and with everything currently going on at the club, who have been charged with multiple breaches of EFL regulations relating to unpaid wages, he might be looking for an escape route. Rohl is also on the shortlist to be the next Leicester City boss, according to reports, and is as short as 1/2 for that position on certain betting apps. Boro Could Consider Challinor Of those contenders with double-figure prices, talk of a move for 25/1 shot Robbie Keane has been dismissed, but there's a possibility the Tessiders talk to ex-Boro midfielder Gary O'Neil, who is out of work after leaving Wolves last season and is a 12/1 chance. A new name on the list is Stockport manager Dave Challinor, who has done an outstanding job with the League One side, taking them from the National League up to League One in three seasons. The Hatters reached the League One play-offs last season before they were beaten in the semi-finals by Leyton Orient. He has also achieved promotion from the National League North with Fylde and promotion back to the EFL with Hartlepool United so he has had success wherever he has been. SAMUEL ILING-JUNIOR feels his time at Middlesbrough has turned him into a better player, and has praised Michael Carrick for the one-one-one tuition he received from the former Boro boss at Rockliffe Park. Iling-Junior joined Boro on loan in January, having spent the first half of the campaign in Italy with Bologna, and made 11 starts and five substitute appearances for the Teessiders. Advertisement He played in a number of different positions, but was Boro's first-choice left-back for most of the last two months of the season, having been moved into the back four after Neto Borges suffered an injury. The 21-year-old enjoyed his time working under Carrick and was disappointed to see the former Manchester United midfielder dismissed last week. Iling-Junior is currently in Slovakia with the England Under-21 squad preparing for Thursday's opening game of the European Under-21 Championships against Czechia, and feels he is in a much stronger position thanks to his time on Teesside. 'There's definitely been a lot of lessons learned this season,' said Iling-Junior, who will return to his parent club, Aston Villa, for pre-season training later this summer. 'A lot of things that I can bring into my game and that's something that I'll take forward. Advertisement 'The biggest lesson, definitely, has been how to manage different loans because it's been my first time out. I was and am comfortable living abroad – it's something that I can adapt to and I've done it before – but being back home was exciting for me. 'Tactically, he could work with players one-to-one and he developed myself. He gave me trust and I was able to show that on the pitch. 'I definitely settled into the left-back role and going up and down the pitch. I enjoyed that, bringing my parts into the team with assists, tricks and being creative.' Advertisement While Iling-Junior was named amongst the forwards when the FA published England's squad list for the Under-21 Euros, he is one of only two realistic options for the left-back slot in Lee Carsley's team. He is competing with Newcastle United's Tino Livramento, who is more naturally a right-back, for a starting role, and is confident he will do himself justice if selected on the left of England's back four. 'It's an honour to be one of the players that the manager's chosen and I want to repay that on the pitch,' he said. 'Tino has obviously had that great season with Newcastle. The competition is always healthy. If I can bring out the best of him and he brings out the best of me and we go and win the tournament then it's happy days.' Iling-Junior has represented England at every age-group level since Under-15s, and is hoping to end his time as an Under-21s player with the high of being crowned European champions. Middlesbrough will be keeping a close eye on the situation in the hope that Iling-Junior might be made available for another loan, but the youngster will be doing everything he can to try to force his way into Villa's first-team group for next season. 'You have to put the World Cup in your sights,' he said. 'You have to knock on that door, or at least put yourself in a position to be knocking on that door. There's a pathway and there's always someone watching. 'All the boys that have made their debut from the Under-21s and are now in that (senior) squad, that just goes to show that if you keep putting your mind to it and work with the coaches, then you'll get repaid for your hard work. 'And I definitely want to get back into Villa after this tournament and have some conversations and make an impact there as well. Unai Emery has always had conversations with me, so that helps. and he's kept track of my loans. 'So, that's definitely a good relationship and once we get back after the tournament then we'll have those conversations. For now, it's about just focusing on the Euros, and we'll see (what happens) when I get back to Villa.'
