Grass fire near Krome Avenue contained, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue says
Firefighters made significant progress in containing a grass fire near Krome Avenue and SW 8th Street in Southwest Miami-Dade on Wednesday afternoon, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Fire containment efforts Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units, working alongside the Florida Forest Service, battled the blaze, stationing crews along the roadway to prevent the fire from spreading and to protect nearby structures, the agency reported. The efforts allowed local traffic to continue safely, though conditions could lead to intermittent road closures, officials said. Krome Avenue from US-27 all the way to Tamiami Trail is currently shut down. A large portion of 8th Street past the Miccosukee Casino is also closed. Video shows heavy black smoke and fire crews dropping water from the sky, known as "air drops." Division Chief Operations North Horacio Rodriguez spoke to our CBS News Miami Reporter, Steve Maugeri. "Currently our rescue south is doing what we call air drops. Which they're picking up water and assisting with fire suppression," said Rodriguez. "I would suggest people just don't come to the area unless you have to," Rodriguez continued. The brush fire has burned 350 acres. On Friday night, about 30% of the fire was contained. No injuries have been reported. This is a developing with continuing updates.

5 children, 3 adults hospitalized after major crash in Miami-Dade, officials say
A two-vehicle crash Thursday evening in South Miami-Dade County hospitalized eight people, including five children. Around 6:50 p.m., Miami-Dade Fire Rescue rushed to the traffic crash near Southwest 286th Street and Southwest 142 Avenue, officials said. Three people were trapped inside a car when firefighters arrived and eventually rescued. Five pediatric and three adult patients were taken to different hospitals. The five children were taken as trauma alerts — four to a trauma center in the western part of the county and one to a southern trauma center. The three adults were taken to local hospitals. Specifics on what hospitals, ages, names or the cause of the crash have not been released. This is a developing story.

Man barricades himself inside Miami-Dade home after slamming 5-year-old son into wall, sheriff's office says
A man has barricaded himself inside a Southwest Miami-Dade home on Saturday afternoon after the sheriff's office said he injured his five-year-old son after slamming him against a wall. Just after 2 p.m., the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to the apartment located near 2055 SW 122 Ave., where a man allegedly "slammed his 5-year-old son against the wall and the child suffered a laceration." Miami-Dade Fire Rescue took the boy to Kendall Regional Hospital for treatment The man has currently barricaded himself inside the home and is refusing to come out, MDSO said.
