Metro Line 5 extn on cards to ease pressure off local trains
Thane: After the train accident in Mumbra, in which four passengers lost their lives, questions were raised about the crowd in the local trains beyond the stations of Thane. With the aim of reducing crowd in local trains, Kalyan Lok Sabha MP Shrikant Shinde called a meeting of senior officials of MMRDA in which it was decided to extend Metro Line 5, which is coming up to Kalyan from Thane via Bhiwandi, further to Ambernath via Ulhasnagar. Shrikant Shinde told TOI, "The Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan Metro Line 5 project will now be extended from Durgadi Naka, via Kalyan, along the Kalyan-Badlapur Road to reach Chikhloli Railway Station in Ambernath, which is centrally located between Ulhasnagar and Ambernath. Mumbai Metro: MMRDA installs 8 U-girders overnight at Kapurbawdi station on Line 4
In a major feat, eight U-girders were installed overnight at Kapurbawdi station, a key interchange point on the soon-to-open Mumbai Metro Line 4 from Wadala to Gaimukh. The installation is an important milestone in the completion of the 35.2-km fully elevated corridor being undertaken by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). According to MMRDA, the operation was conducted during the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, and included the positioning of girders weighing nearly 98 metric tonnes each, adding up to a total of approximately 783 metric tonnes. It was executed carefully and with accuracy amid the flow of traffic. The operation was conducted across two spans, supporting both the up and down corridors. Kapurbawdi station, located on Ghodbunder Road in Thane, will serve as an important link between Metro Line 4 and the proposed Metro Line 5 (Thane-Bhiwandi-Kalyan). Once operational, this multi-level interchange will significantly ease travel across Mumbai's extended suburbs and reduce traffic congestion on roadways. 'The station is being constructed as a new 185-metre-long elevated level with improved facilities to handle high-density Metro traffic. Its development sits within MMRDA's overall vision of bringing mobility solutions across the city closer together to facilitate quicker, greener commuting,' an MMRDA official said. More than 90 workers — riggers, skilled and unskilled labour, and traffic management officials — worked together to make this happen with the help of high-capacity cranes, multi-axle trailers, pullers, and lifting gear. Traffic officials were also kept informed to cause the least amount of inconvenience to commuters along Ghodbunder Road. Metro Line 4 will revolutionise east-west mobility, connecting Central Mumbai to Thane and beyond. It will have 32 stations, an automated train system, and energy efficient infrastructure. Upon completion, it will decrease travel time by 50-75 per cent on major routes and provide a clean and reliable alternative to road transport.
