Former Corporators Ramp Up Public Outreach In Build-Up To Civic Polls

1 2 3 Nagpur: With civic election procedures gaining momentum, former corporators across the city have become increasingly active in reconnecting with their wards and addressing unresolved civic issues, filling the vacuum created by over three years under the civic administration. Already, the senior rung of leaders in the BJP camp, including CM Devendra Fadnavis, Union minister Nitin Gadkari, and even guardian minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, have started holding Janta Darbars. In Prabhag 26, senior BJP leader and former corporator Dharmapal Meshram recently conducted a detailed review of persistent civic problems. Acting on a slew of complaints from residents, particularly dysfunctional street lights and domestic electricity issues, Meshram held meetings with officials from the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) and Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). Meshram called a joint meeting involving Mahavitaran officials, party workers, and citizens to address household power issues. He also instructed the electrical department to immediately repair defunct street lights and install new ones where necessary to restore street illumination in the area. With their party in power in the state, former corpoators from the BJP are also ensuring that NMC officials remain present in their wards to address the issue of civic amenities raised by the citizens. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Free P2,000 GCash eGift UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo Meshram pressed executive engineers from NMC's electric, NMC's PWD, and even MSEDCL officials to sort out issues of residents. Meshram is not alone. Vijay aka Pintu Zalke, another former corporator, has also intensified his public outreach. Like others, he has been trying to fill the political void left by the dissolution of the NMC's general body in March 2022 which led to bureaucratic governance without elected representation. With polls likely in the coming months, Zalke and others have begun directly engaging with citizens, addressing grievances, and reviving their grassroots presence. Former BJP city chief Jitendra Kukde, too, has returned to active fieldwork in his former ward. "As I was busy with both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections after being appointed city president, I missed regular interactions with people of my Prabhag," said Kukde, who was later replaced by Dayashankar Tiwari. Now out of party office, Kukde is back on the ground, attempting to rebuild his image and rapport with voters. Several ex-corporators have also reopened their contact offices to directly receive complaints. Former women corporators from opposition camps like Sneha Nikose and Shakshi Raut have become proactive, addressing issues like sewer blockages, irregular garbage collection, low water pressure, and damaged public infrastructure. These efforts come as citizens grow increasingly frustrated with the lukewarm response of the civic officials. With many wards still plagued by basic issues — ranging from faulty street lights and choked drains to uncollected garbage — former corporators are leveraging this discontent to re-establish their political relevance. The surge in activity suggests that while the municipal body remains under administrative control, the unofficial race for the civic body's 151 seats has already begun on the ground.

NMC's rebate scheme boosts property tax collection by 28% in first 2.5 months

Nagpur: The rebate scheme launched by Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on property tax has led to a 28% increase in revenue collection in the first two and a half months of the current financial year. The civic body offers a 15% rebate for online payments made before June 30 and a 10% rebate for offline payments. By June 11, FY 2025-26, NMC collected Rs45.33 crore from 1.16 lakh property owners, up from Rs35.47 crore collected from 85,581 taxpayers during the same period last year. Deputy commissioner (Revenue) Milind Meshram told TOI that the steady growth indicates that more citizens are availing themselves of the rebate offer, particularly by making payments online. "Among the 10 zones, Laxmi Nagar recorded the highest number of taxpayers at 18,375 and also topped the revenue chart with Rs7.3 crore, up from Rs6.38 crore collected from 14,827 properties last year," said Meshram. Hanuman Nagar zone followed with Rs6.64 crore from 20,391 properties, a considerable rise from Rs4.67 crore from 13,423 units in 2024. Dharampeth and Nehru Nagar zones also reported impressive growth. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Was Hidden in His Truck Will Surprise You prestigetrophy Learn More Undo Collection from the Dharampeth zone rose to Rs4.8 crore from Rs3.65 crore, while the Nehru Nagar zone almost doubled its figures — from Rs4.03 crore last year to Rs6.23 crore now — with over 5,000 more taxpayers availing the rebate. Mangalwari zone added nearly Rs1 crore more to its coffers, rising from Rs4.78 crore in 2024 to Rs5.87 crore in 2025. Lakadganj, Ashi Nagar, and Satranjipura zones also reported healthy increases, reflecting growing awareness about the rebate deadline. However, a few zones saw marginal or mixed trends. Dhantoli zone, despite a small rise in the number of properties, reported a slight dip in overall collection, from Rs2.86 crore to Rs2.80 crore. The Gandhibagh zone too showed subdued growth. With the June 30 deadline approaching, officials expect a further surge in collections, especially online. The civic body is optimistic that this early momentum will help it meet the annual property tax target, easing fiscal pressure and enabling better public services. After June 30, under the scheme, those who pay their full property tax for the financial year 2025-26 online by December 31 will receive a 10% rebate, while those paying offline will get a 5% rebate.

Gold ETFs rebound in May, record net inflow of Rs 292 crore

New Delhi: Gold exchange-traded funds (ETFs) regained investor interest in May after two months of net withdrawals, the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) data showed on Tuesday. Gold ETFs recorded a net inflow of Rs 291.91 crore in May 2025, marking an improvement from the marginal outflow of Rs 5.82 crore in April, according to the AMFI data. 'Flows into the category had remained muted over the past two months, following modest outflows in March as well. The renewed traction in May signals a gradual return of investor interest, likely driven by resilient gold prices and sustained global uncertainties that reinforce gold's appeal as a strategic hedge,' said Nehal Meshram, Senior Analyst–Manager Research, Morningstar Investment Research India. The uptick also shows that investors are regaining confidence in gold, as it continues to offer stability amid mixed signals from equity and bond markets. Furthermore, the relative stability in gold prices through May have provided a more attractive entry point for investors looking to build or rebalance allocations toward safer assets. The resurgence in flows also highlights the growing role of Gold ETFs in strategic asset allocation, especially as investors seek to manage risk in an increasingly uncertain investment environment. 'While inflows are yet to reach the levels seen earlier in the year, the trend suggests a gradual and measured return of interest in gold, underpinned by its long-term diversification benefits,' said Meshram. According to Motilal Oswal Private Wealth's May Alpha Strategist Report, in Q1 2025, the gold market experienced a historic surge, with prices reaching record highs amid escalating geopolitical tensions, tariff wars, and a weakening US dollar. The total supply rose modestly, but the soaring price led to a significant increase in market value. Investment demand saw a dramatic 170 per cent on-year rise, driven by a strong rebound in gold ETF inflows, particularly in Europe, Asia, and India.

Armed robbery cracked in 15 hours, pharmacy employee among 3 nabbed

Nagpur: The Dhantoli police cracked a daring armed robbery allegedly orchestrated by an employee of a pharmacy at a prominent hospital in Dhantoli within just 15 hours. Police arrested three suspects in the case and recovered Rs30,000 cash and a motorcycle used in the crime. Police leveraged CCTV footage and manual intelligence to nab the suspects. Police said the mastermind, Aman Todsam, a pharmacy worker at the hospital, allegedly planned the heist to make quick money. He tipped off his friend, Tushar Meshram, about the movements of the man who collected cash from the pharmacy and deposited it in a bank. Meshram, in turn, roped in Sameer Kawade, a criminal, to execute the robbery. The trio conducted reconnaissance of the man's routes and timings. On June 3, Meshram and Kawade, with their faces covered, ambushed the man at knifepoint on Abhyankar Road and fled with Rs70,000. They used a pungent chemical solution, the nature of which is still under investigation, to disorient their target. Senior inspector Anamika Mirzapure said the detection branch, headed by assistant PI Sanket Choudhary, played a pivotal role in cracking the case. The team accessed CCTV footage which had captured the suspects riding a motorcycle without a registration plate. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The footage traced their last location to the Futala locality. The investigation, supervised by assistant commissioner of police Sudhir Nandanvar and zonal deputy commissioner of police Rahul Madane, led to the seizure of the suspects' cellphones for further analysis.
