Indian Open of Surfing: Srikanth D claims men's title

Mangalore [Karnataka], June 21 (ANI): Tamil Nadu's Srikanth D clinched the Men's Open title while Kamali Moorthy defended both her titles in the Women's Open and Groms Girls (U-16) categories at the 6th Indian Open of Surfing, the second leg of the 2025 National Surfing Championship Series which concluded in Mangalore. On Friday, Prahlad Sriram of Tamil Nadu also secured the title in the Groms Boys (U-16) category. Organized by the Surfing Swami Foundation and hosted by Mantra Surf Club under the aegis of the Surfing Federation of India, the national championship once again highlighted Tamil Nadu's dominance in all four categories. Originally scheduled from May 30 to June 1, the competition had to be postponed due to adverse weather conditions in Mangalore. It was later held behind closed doors, with only participants and officials in attendance, as per a press release. -Srikanth D Emerges as New Men's Champion After finishing second in last year's final, Srikanth D returned stronger and more focused, with a winning score of 14.63, edging out reigning national champion Ramesh Budilal, who finished second with 11.87. Sivaraj Babu (9.77) and Sanjay Selvamani (7.07) rounded off the top four. -Double Delight for Kamali Moorthy Defending champion Kamali Moorthy continued her reign as India's leading female surfer, winning both the Women's Open and Groms Girls (U-16) categories once again. Her score of 13.33 in the Women's Open final saw her convincingly beat Sugar Shanti Banarse (10.50), while Shrishti Selvam scored 2.47 to finish third. In the Groms Girls final, Kamali delivered a spectacular performance, posting the highest heat total of the event--a staggering 15.50--to seal her title defence. The young sensation finished well ahead of Aadya Singh (2.36) and Saanvi Hegde (2.20). -Prahlad Sriram Makes Waves in Groms Boys (U-16) In the Groms Boys (U-16) final, Prahlad Sriram emerged victorious with a total of 11.06, narrowly beating Harish P (9.67) and Som Sethi (9.30). The contest in this category was particularly close, highlighting the depth of young surfing talent in India. -Delayed but Determined: A Successful Edition The event was originally scheduled to be held from May 30 to June 1, 2025, but had to be postponed due to adverse weather and rough sea conditions caused by early monsoon activity and cyclonic disturbances in the Arabian Sea. Despite the disruptions, the organising committee, comprising the Surfing Swami Foundation, Mantra Surf Club, and Surfing Federation of India (SFI) ensured that the championship resumed later in a more controlled format, giving athletes a fair and safe platform to compete. 'While the event had to be rescheduled and scaled down, the quality of surfing remained exceptional. The Indian Open of Surfing, the second stop on the National Surfing Championship Series, faced some delays, but we were committed to ensuring that the competition took place, as cancelling it would have impacted the surfers' national rankings,' said Rammohan Paranjape, Vice President of Surfing Federation of India and Director of Mantra Surf Club. Though it was a low-key event held behind closed doors, the spirit of competition and the passion displayed by the athletes were truly inspiring. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and commend every participant for competing with such dedication and resilience,' he added. (ANI)

Bowls SA Open set for thrilling finale

Perfect bowling conditions greeted players and spectators alike at the Westview Bowling Club as the Bowls SA Men's Open reached a thrilling climax with semifinal action across the pairs, fours, and singles disciplines unfolding on Saturday. A day of top-quality play saw experience and composure shine through under the pressure of competition, which brings the best of the best to Gqeberha. In the pairs, the Knysna duo of Billy Radloff and John Rimbault showcased consistency and tactical precision to edge out Donny Piketh and Mike Herbert of Morningside Country Club. The semifinal was tightly contested, with the momentum swinging midway through the game. In the end, it was Radloff and Rimbault who managed to keep their nerve when it counted most as the pressure finally told down the business end. They secured a 17-11 victory in a match where the scoreline didn't quite reflect the closeness of the battle, earning themselves a deserved spot in the final against Mickey Underwood and Logan Sobramany (Comrades Bowling Club). The fours discipline saw two compelling semifinals unfold in the afternoon, where the sun baked the greens and the perfect surfaces allowed for some excellent shot-making. Current Protea Niksa Benguric led his star-studded team in the final after a fast start against the quartet led by Wilson Malobolo. The match was enthralling as Malobolo's side clawed their way back to within five shots but ultimately fell short in a 28-17 defeat. In the other semifinal, it was an all-Port Natal affair as Paul White's team overcame Wayne Roberts' side 20-11. White's leadership proved instrumental, guiding his team with precision and calm to secure a crucial victory and a place in the gold medal match. Meanwhile, the Open singles semifinals delivered the kind of high-stakes drama expected at this level. Former SA international Wayne Perry was in devastating form as he ended the hopes of Mowbray's Dave van der Walt in a commanding display. Perry's line and length were nearly flawless, and he advanced to the final with a clinical 21-8 win. Awaiting him was Brendan Ferns, who produced a spirited fightback from Aiden De Smidt in a tightly-fought match, eventually triumphing 21-17. Ferns needed to produce quality bowls time and time again as he came from 17-12 behind to move within one of representing SA at the World Champion of Champions later in the year. With brilliant weather and more excellent bowls to follow, the Westview Bowling Club is set to witness a showcase of SA talent on Sunday as new champions emerge with the right to be called national champions. And it might even be a golden day for Perry, who competes in not one but two finals as he looks to win singles and fours gold. Sunday's action starts at 8.30am. — Bowls SA

More space for oyster fans at this year's festival

Lindsay Beer. PHOTO: NINA TAPU It will be a full floor when the Bluff Oyster & Food Festival takes place today. The festival returned last year — the first time since 2021 — after a break of a few years because of Covid and health and safety issues. But today's festival will be bigger and better, as the entire space originally planned for the festival will be available for the first time. The trust bought the rundown Club Hotel, a Category 2 heritage building, and the land in 2014. However, there were health and safety concerns associated with the hotel on the festival site. The trust then attempted to sell it but failed to attract a buyer, so it applied to the Invercargill City Council in 2019 for resource consent to demolish the building. The festival organisers finally gained consent to demolish the old hotel building in January last year after a previous attempt. A year on from the demolition, there is another 800sq m of floor being used and it will give the sold-out crowd plenty of room to roam. Bluff promotions officer Lindsay Beer said more space would be great for those attending. Tickets for the event had sold out weeks ago and 4000 punters would be rolling up to enjoy the food and refreshments on offer. About 60% of the people who attend come from outside Southland. A plane of 180 grab-a-seat passengers is flying into Invercargill from Auckland this morning and they are set to head back to Auckland later today. Mr Beer said people from all round the world turned up for the day. The weather in Bluff had been a bit rough earlier this week but a decent day was forecast for today. Mr Beer confirmed the oysters arrived yesterday and were all set to be eaten by the masses today. One of the highlights of the day are the races, which involve professional oyster openers racing each other with events for men, women, novices, factory relay teams and a blindfold race. Xavier Fife, of Calders Oysters, won the Men's Open last year, opening 50 oysters in a time of 3min 9sec. Mr Fife is back to defend the title this year while a two-time champion, Ricci Grant, is confirmed to be in the field as well. Vic Pearsey had won 10 titles in a row in the Women's Open before standing aside last year when Peg Bishop took over the mantle getting through 50 oysters in 3min 34sec. Ms Bishop is not competing this year, so the title race is wide open. Team Barnes won the Factory Relay race in 2024 but face tough competition this year from a Calders Oysters team of previous men's champions. After the openers have demonstrated their skills, volunteers from the crowd are invited on stage to find the fastest competitor to down a dozen of Bluff's finest.
