JJ Spaun to be 'Heartbeat' of Team USA at Ryder Cup, per Keegan Bradley
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. There are still 100 days until the Ryder Cup, but conversations about both teams are becoming more and more frequent. It's no surprise that captains are being asked about it at every opportunity, as happened with Keegan Bradley ahead of the Travelers Championship. For now, only Scottie Scheffler is a lock to make the American Ryder Cup team. However, Bradley has already practically confirmed another name on the roster: JJ Spaun. MoreAlthough the captain didn't say it was a done deal, his words leave little room for doubt: "I think he [Spaun] is a guy that people at Bethpage will really resonate with and a guy that on our team is the heartbeat," Bradley said. "He's now the U.S. Open champion. That's a heavy burden to bear, but that's also a great thing to have on your team." "I'm really proud to have him on this team because it's really difficult to make your first team. To go out there the way he did this year and play in these big events this well is a testament to what a player he is." Spaun's US Open victory propelled him to third in the rankings to make the American Ryder Cup team. Given the remaining schedule, Spaun has a very high chance of finishing in the top six and directly qualifying for the team. However, based on Bradley's comments, if Spaun doesn't finish in the top six, it's safe to say that his selection as a free pick is a sure thing. Keegan Bradley: "I think going to a course like Bethpage Black, the people are really going to be behind a guy like J.J. Spaun." — Underdog Golf (@UnderdogGolf) June 18, 2025 Bradley offered several reasons for his current opinion of JJ Spaun: "He's played so great this year. I think going to a course like Bethpage Black, the people are really going to be behind a guy like J.J. Spaun." "His story is incredible. He's a hard working guy that's just building and building and building his whole career." "To win the U.S. Open at Oakmont, in my eyes, is the pinnacle of major golf. It's as tough as you can get." Spaun began the 2025 season ranked 115th in the Official World Golf Ranking, but has seen a meteoric rise, thanks primarily to his second-place finish at The Players Championship (losing in a playoff to Rory McIlroy) and his victory at the US Open. These results are complemented by three other top-10 finishes, including another second place (Cognizant Classic). Such performances have catapulted him to No. 8 in the world. Scottie Scheffler sent warning after US Open as rival says he will take him down
Being world No. 1 comes with its pressures and it's something that Scottie Scheffler now has to contend with following Ben Griffin's bold statement about him following the US Open Ben Griffin has thrown down the gauntlet to world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, signalling his intentions to challenge the golf superstar after their recent clash at the US Open. Scheffler, 28, wrapped up the tournament in joint-seventh place, carding a four-over-par. Griffin, 29, finished a whisker behind in joint-10th with a five-over-par score. The North Carolina-born star turned heads during the major, especially after he found himself among the seven players who managed even par or better after the initial two rounds. The event was ultimately clinched by J.J. Spaun, but it was Griffin's performance that had people talking, reports the Mirror US. Speaking on Sirius XM Radio after his second round, Griffin surprised listeners with a surprising take as he said: "I feel like I'm one of the top few golfers in the world right now. "I'm just at a point in my career where I'm doing some good things physically and mentally. I'm in a really good place where I'm just trying to be one of the best golfers in the world, or honestly, be the best golfer in the world. I'm excited to take down Scottie [Scheffler]." The rivalry between Griffin and Scheffler isn't new. Earlier this year it was Scheffler who edged out Griffin to claim victory at the Memorial Tournament, adding another layer to their competitive dynamic. "After the Memorial, I was so disappointed in finishing second, and if I go back two years, it would be the greatest thing ever to finish second to Scottie, but now I just feel like I belong at the top," Griffin added. Neither player performed to their best at Oakmont, which Scheffler acknowledged. However, he expressed satisfaction in his perseverance in the face of a tough challenge. "My first three days, I felt like I was battling the whole time," Scheffler said. "Today, I hit some shots, I hit some putts that I really thought were going in, hit some lips. "It was just challenging. There was a lot of pitch on the greens and you got to do a lot right in order to hole putts." He continued: "I was just right on the edge today. If I had four days like I did today, I think it would have been a different story. "I was playing kind of behind the eight ball most of the week hitting the ball in the rough. Overall, proud of how I battled, gave myself a chance, but ultimately didn't have enough." Griffin and Scheffler will soon go head-to-head once more as they are lined up to take part in the Travelers Championship later this week. The last signature event of the 2025 PGA Tour season will get underway on Thursday, June 19.

Scottie Scheffler admits that bettors forced him to delete his Venmo account
Scheffler speaks to reporters ahead of the US Open at Oakmont Country Club. -Being the strong favorite to win a golf tournament isn't always an easy responsibility to bear. Just ask Scottie Scheffler, who has revealed that he was forced to close his Venmo account because of bettors staking money on his performance. Ahead of this week's US Open at Pennsylvania's Oakmont Country Club, for which Scheffler is the strong favorite, the world No. 1 explained how he often hears from fans who have a financial interest in where he finishes at tournaments. Advertisement 'That's why I had to get rid of my Venmo because I was either getting paid by people or people requesting me a bunch of money when I didn't win,' he told reporters. 'It wasn't a good feeling.' Asked about the biggest sum he had ever been sent as a thank you, Scheffler added: 'I don't remember the most that somebody would send me. Maybe a couple bucks here or there. That didn't happen nearly as much as the requests did.' Scheffler has never won a US Open, but he enters the tournament with three wins in his last four appearances, which includes winning a third major title at the PGA Championship last month. After suffering a freak hand injury while cooking Christmas dinner and spending time away from the game to recover, Scheffler's recent results signal a clear return to form. He underlined his dominance with a four-shot victory at the Memorial Tournament in his last outing, joining Tiger Woods as the only back-to-back winners of the event. Advertisement 'Starting Thursday morning, we're at even par and it's up to me to go out there and play against the golf course and see what I can do,' said Scheffler. Oakmont Country Club, which is hosting the US Open for a record 10th time, is a daunting prospect for even the world's best golfers, with fast greens and thick, unforgiving rough. Low scores are not expected this week, and Scheffler went as far as to call it 'probably the hardest golf course that we'll play maybe ever.' He added: 'When you talk about strength and power, I think that becomes more of a factor in these tournaments because, when you hit it into the rough, you've got to muscle it out of there.' Scheffler, seeking his fourth title of the year, tees off at 1:25 p.m. ET on Thursday in a group with Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account at
