RCSI Bahrain sends nurses to Taiwan for training

Nursing students and faculty from Bahrain may soon gain hands-on training experience in Taiwan, as RCSI Medical University of Bahrain pushes ahead with an international exchange programme under a growing partnership with Taiwan's top nursing institution. Training Abroad The initiative follows a follow-up visit by a senior delegation from RCSI Bahrain to the National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences (NTUNHS) in April. The collaboration builds on a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2024, and includes student clinical placements, joint research initiatives, and professional development programmes for faculty. Leading the delegation were Professor Kathryn Strachan, Head of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, and Dr Maryam Alaradi, Director of the BSc Nursing Programme. They reviewed NTUNHS's teaching facilities, including its simulation centre, and held discussions with senior Taiwanese academics to finalise the scope of collaboration. Global Exposure 'This visit represents a significant advancement in our strategic engagement with NTUNHS,' said Professor Strachan. 'We are particularly focused on enhancing academic and research exchange programmes that enrich both faculty expertise and student learning as well as exposure to international health systems outside the Middle East.' The delegation praised the quality of Taiwan's nursing education and its emphasis on student-centred learning, which they said closely aligns with RCSI Bahrain's approach. Diplomatic Support RCSI Bahrain also extended appreciation to H.E. Bob L.J. Chen, Representative of the Taipei Trade Office in Bahrain, and Vice Consul Shadin Lu for facilitating the visit. The institution noted that the partnership supports its mission to equip graduates with the clinical skills and cultural awareness to succeed in a globalised healthcare environment. Discussions are expected to continue as the two institutions move to activate student and faculty exchanges in the coming academic year.

Import ban on bird, poultry from Belgium lifted — DA

The Department of Agriculture (DA) announced Thursday that it has lifted the ban on importing domestic and wild birds, including poultry products from Belgium. In a statement, the DA said the lifting was done following confirmation that the recent avian flu outbreak in the European country has been fully contained. In his Memorandum Order No. 30, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said the lifting of the import ban comes after Belgian veterinary authorities formally declared the outbreak resolved, with no new bird flu cases reported after February 28. The certification from Belgium, Tiu Laurel said, complies with the guidelines set by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). 'Belgium is now free from HPAI and the risk of contamination from importing domestic and wild birds and their products, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen is negligible,' said the Agriculture chief. The DA said the decision allows the resumption of trade with one of Europe's key poultry producers, restoring a reliable supply line for the Philippines while maintaining strict biosecurity standards. The trade restriction was originally imposed due to an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in Sint-Niklaas, Oost-Vlaanderen on February 17. It was a precautionary measure aimed at protecting local poultry industries from potential viral transmission. The DA said import ban was initially imposed to protect the poultry industry, which plays a critical role in the country's food security, job creation, and investment generation within the agricultural sector. — Ted Cordero/RSJ, GMA Integrated News

Emirates Partners with Bahamasair to Expand Caribbean Access for UAE Travellers

Emirates has signed a strategic interline agreement with Bahamasair, opening new travel options for passengers flying from the UAE to The Bahamas via the United States. The partnership allows Emirates customers to seamlessly connect from Miami or Orlando to three destinations in The Bahamas—Nassau, Freeport, and San Salvador—through Bahamasair, the country's national carrier. Travellers can now book their entire journey, including flights on both airlines, using a single ticket, while enjoying generous baggage allowances. The move strengthens Emirates' footprint in the Caribbean and aligns with its broader strategy of offering more global connectivity to passengers from the UAE and beyond. The agreement follows a Memorandum of Understanding signed at the Arabian Travel Market between Emirates and The Bahamas' Ministry of Foreign Affairs to jointly promote tourism to the island nation. Adnan Kazim, Emirates' Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer, said the deal enhances travel convenience and expands the airline's network to new leisure destinations. 'This partnership offers customers competitive fares, simple booking, and better connectivity to The Bahamas,' he said. Bahamasair's Managing Director, Tracy Cooper, welcomed the collaboration, highlighting the access to new markets and international expertise it brings. 'This significantly elevates Bahamasair's global profile and strengthens our growth potential,' she noted. Emirates currently serves Miami with daily flights and Orlando with five-weekly services, connecting passengers from the UAE to over 140 destinations worldwide. The agreement also paves the way for future cooperation in cargo services and frequent flyer programmes. The deal is expected to boost tourism and trade between the UAE and the Caribbean, offering a convenient new route for Emirati travellers seeking tropical escapes. News Source: Emirates News Agency
