Junior Spurs defeat Black Medal FC at KaBokweni Stadium

Junior Spurs FC claimed all the spoils with a 2-1 victory over Black Medal FC in the Safa Ehlanzeni U20 League at KaBokweni Stadium on Saturday, June 14. This marks Medal's second consecutive defeat in the league, following their 5-0 loss to TS Galaxy Academy. In a thrilling start, both teams fought for dominance in the opening 15 minutes. Medal's defence was breached when Sibusiso Metane scored in the 18th minute, assisted by Tsepiso Mokoena of Spurs. Spurs continued to press for a second goal, but their well-constructed attack was denied by Medal's goalkeeper, Ayanda Khumalo, in the 27th minute. Before the half-time break, Medal's Phiwokuhle Mamba and Samkelo Mazibuko missed two clear chances to level the score. At the break, Spurs led 1-0. Mcallen Nkosi of Medal equalised in the 46th minute, finishing a pass from Mamba after Spurs' Simphiwe Zulu committed a reckless foul just outside the box. In the 71st minute, Lindelani Silinda restored Spurs' lead with a well-worked goal, assisted by Vuyo Thwala. The move followed a corner delivered by Ace Mkhwatshwa, bringing the score to 2-1. The first yellow card of the game was shown to Mamba for time-wasting after he kicked the ball out of play following the referee's whistle. 'It is a heart-breaking loss, I did not expect it. We were at home in front of our fans, but, at the end of the day, we fell short 2-1. We did not score goals with the chances we made. We have to go back to training and organise the forwards and strikers to improve and be more clinical,' said Sibiya. 'I want to tell the truth – I'm disappointed in the boys, even though they won. They conceded a soft goal, and we were supposed to score a lot more. I used that defence because I didn't want to concede. Looking at our opponents, they made more chances than we did,' said Sikhode. 155 MALBATT 850-12 Personnel Honoured With UN Medals In Lebanon

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 (Bernama) -- A total of 155 officers and personnel from the Malaysian Battalion (MALBATT) 850-12 were awarded the United Nations (UN) Medal during a ceremonial medal parade held at Camp Marakah, Lebanon, yesterday. In a statement issued today, MALBATT 850-12 confirmed that the recipients included 20 officers, 134 rank-and-file personnel, and one Administrative and Diplomatic Officer. 'Leading the list of honourees was MALBATT 850-12 commander Colonel Johan Effendi Mohd Shalleh, receiving the medal as a symbolic recognition of his leadership and key role in the successful execution of the mission. 'The medals were then presented to senior officers and all other personnel by UNIFIL Western Sector commander, Brig Gen Nicola Mandolesi,' the statement said. The medal parade was led by MALBATT 850-12 deputy commander Lt Col Firdaus Shah Budin and accompanied by a military band from the Ghanaian Battalion (GHANBATT). Also in attendance was Malaysian Ambassador to Lebanon, Azri Mat Yacob, who took part in the medal presentation as a gesture of the Malaysian government's support and appreciation for the battalion's contributions to international peacekeeping. 'The awarding of the UN Medal is formal recognition of MALBATT 850-12's contributions to regional peace and their professional and dedicated execution of international duties,' the statement said. MALBATT 850-12 began its deployment under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in November 2024, during a particularly volatile period marked by conflict in southern Lebanon and heightened regional tensions involving Israel and Iran - factors that have severely strained local political stability and security. 'In this context, the presence of MALBATT 850-12 plays a vital role in supporting UNIFIL's mandate to assist the Lebanese Government in strengthening security control and monitoring within their area of operations.

U.S. Army 250th birthday three-day celebration set to be held in Philadelphia and Valley Forge

U.S. Army soldiers work on an assortment of M1 Alpha a3 Abrams tanks, stryker armored vehicles, and M2 Bradley fighting vehicles at West Potomac Park along the Potomac River on June 11, 2025 in Washington, D.C. Tanks and other heavy military equipment have arrived in the nation's capital for a military parade in honor of the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary, which coincides with President Donald Trump's birthday and Flag Day. (Photo by) Although the vast majority of attention has been directed towards Washington D.C. for the upcoming weekend, the Philadelphia region will be hosting a three-day celebration to mark the U.S. Army's 250th birthday. The Army was founded in Philadelphia. Erica Liermann, a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant, is the director of Marketing and Communications for the Association of the U.S. Army (AUSA) Penn and Franklin Chapters, a non-profit organization. She said that the weekend is an opportunity to 'celebrate our heritage' and focus on the history that the city has to offer. 'This event is not political,' Liermann said during a joint informational meeting of the state House and Senate Veterans Affairs & Emergency Preparedness committees. The gathering kicks off on Friday afternoon in Valley Forge and includes a guided tour of the Washington Memorial Chapel, a Medal of Honor Grove tour and wreath laying ceremony. Both are free and open to the public. The final event of the evening will be a cocktail reception that is a ticketed event. The bulk of the celebration will take place on Saturday in Philadelphia. It begins in the morning with an opening ceremony at Independence Mall that includes a flag-raising ceremony, the national anthem, and remarks from elected officials and military leaders. A brief military and civilian parade will be held in the early afternoon that features service members, veteran groups, re-enactors, marching bands, and SOCOM Para-Commando Parachute Demonstration. An enlistment ceremony will take place later in the afternoon that will feature 250 new soldiers taking their oath, followed by an Army Field Band Concert. 'We are just turning the city into a party hall,' Liermann said. 'We want everyone to consider everybody family. Everyone is welcome to join, to bring anybody.' Liermann emphasized that these events, which are free and open to the public, will be family friendly and include rock walls. She also said there will be military and armored vehicles on display, although they will not be rolling down the street. On Saturday evening, an invitation-only gathering will take place at the 1st City Troop Armory in Philadelphia. The events wrap up on Sunday morning in Philadelphia with a church service at Christ Church, which will include remarks from the former Under Secretary of the U.S. Army Patrick Murphy, who represented a Bucks County-based district in the U.S. House from 2007-2011. Following mass, there will be a George Washington Commissioning Reenactment on the north side of Independence Hall, a procession to Washington Square, a wreath laying ceremony, and final words to mark the weekend long celebration. All of these events on Sunday are free and open to the public. Thomas Long is a retired U.S. Army sergeant and organizer for GoArmy250, the group planning the event. He said the celebration is going to be monumental. 'The birthplace of the Army, the birthplace of the Navy, and the birthplace of the Marines are here, the same birthplace as the nation, but we came first,' he said. Long, a disabled veteran, noted that Saturday is also Flag Day and Philadelphia will host the Navy and Marines 250th birthday celebrations later this year in the fall. Earlier in the week, state Sen. Doug Mastriano, chairman of the Senate Veterans and Emergency Preparedness Committee and a retired U.S. Army colonel, held an event in Harrisburg honoring the U.S. Army's anniversary. The state House also unanimously adopted a resolution sponsored by state Rep. Jim Haddock (D-Luzerne), designating June 14, 2025, as the '250th Birthday of the United States Army' in the state. In central Pennsylvania, the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center in Carlisle is opening its new exhibit on Saturday 'This We'll Defend: Celebrating 250 years of Army History.' A spokesperson told the Capital-Star that this museum is free of charge and open to the public.

Pacific solar pioneer, charitable Aussies earn gongs

Completing university in the early 1980s, Geoff Stapleton had no way of predicting how vital his chosen expertise in solar energy would be. "The industry was pretty well non-existent back then," he told AAP. Fast forward four decades, and Mr Stapleton can look back on a career supporting the rollout of renewable energy in Australia and further abroad, including the Pacific. As of Monday, he will also add an AO after his name, an Officer of the Order of Australia appointed for distinguished service to engineering in the renewable and sustainable energy sector, and to training and development. Mr Stapleton, 66, has been hands on with his Pacific work, personally training many workers across the blue continent, as well as developing industry standards. The rewards are clear: bringing power sources to many remote communities for the first time, allowing connectivity, business growth, poverty relief, and access to health. "To them it's a no brainer, solar is cheaper than diesel," he said. "Seeing people out there installing systems, it's very satisfying. "Just look at Vanuatu: there's no more kerosene lights, it's all solar lanterns and that's a major heath saving." He isn't done, and is realising a dream of several decades, this year breaking ground to build a regional training centre for renewable workers in Suva, alongside the University of the South Pacific's TAFE campus. Mr Stapleton is one of a number of Australians given King's Birthday Honours for their efforts to support their nation's closest neighbours in the Pacific. Dennis Perry, the co-founder of Papua New Guinea-based charity Operation Life, is another, awarded a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for his decades of volunteer work. Mr Perry, 77, said he was moved to begin his education and poverty alleviation-focused charity after seeing a family burrowing in rubbish dump for food in Tonga. "You talk as a kid about being a good Samaritan ... that motivated me when I saw a great need to do something about it," he told AAP. "Sitting in a church wasn't good enough. I thought God expected more than that." Operation Life has expanded from its Port Moresby base, where it offers poverty alleviation, an orphanage and a school, into the Central Province, with a rapidly expanding school in Kivori Poe. Enrolment is up about 300, with many receiving an education including how to grow crops. "When they leave our school they will have not only life skills but hope and dignity," Mr Perry said.
