Doral's Villazon voted state's Miss Softball. Plus Bobby Curtis tennis results
Senior pitcher Meagan Villazon of Miami Doral Academy is the Florida Dairy Farmers 2025 Miss Softball following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school softball coaches and media representatives. Villazon led her squad to the Class 6A state title with a 26-1 record. She posted an 0.63 ERA, while striking out 261 batters in 145 innings pitched. At the plate, she batted .475 with nine doubles, two home runs and 45 RBI. She has signed to play softball at NCAA Division I Florida International University in Miami. She is the third player from Miami-Dade County to win the award since 1993. Villazon, who was earlier named Class 6A Player of the Year to become eligible for Miss Softball honors, won the overall award with 12 of the 22 first-place votes and 159 points overall to finish ahead of Class 5A POY Leah Stevens of Palm Coast Matanzas, who had 105 points and Class 2A POY Morgen Talley of Clearwater Calvary Christian (83). Miami Springs baseball player Magdiel Estevez is the Miami Herald's High School Athlete of the Week, as voted on by readers in our weekly poll. The senior allowed just one run on two hits and four walks over seven innings (complete game), while striking out six including the final three batters as the Golden Hawks (28-3) edged Santa Rosa Beach South Walton 2-1 to win the Class 3A state championship. It marked the school's first state title in baseball. Meagan Villazon, Doral Academy softball; Kathleen Serig, Gulliver Prep water polo; Isabella Benton, Plantation American Heritage softball; Dane Fox, Westminster Academy water polo; Ava Stevens, Somerset Silver Palms softball; and RJ Machado, Plantation American Heritage baseball rounded out the nominees.

Nationally-ranked Doral Academy softball team moves closer to state final four
Doral Academy's softball team has taken things to a higher level this season. The Firebirds are 28-1 following Tuesday's 10-0 mercy-rule win at home over Coconut Creek Monarch in a Region 4-6A semifinal. They are ranked No. 4 nationally by MaxPreps. And just how dominant have they been this postseason? Since the district playoffs began, Doral has even allowed a hit. Senior Meagan Villazon, who stepped up and became the team's ace in the pitching circle this season, pitched her fifth no-hitter in a start of four or more innings this season on Tuesday, striking out 10 of the 15 batters she faced. She also hit a two-run double to help Doral break open a close game with five runs in the third and three more in the fourth. Alondra Aldebol-Borrero went 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI while Anabela Abdullah went 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBI. Sarah Breaux went 2 for 2 with a home run, a triple and an RBI. On Thursday, the Firebirds will next host the winner of the South Plantation-West Boca Raton semifinal which will be played on Wednesday night, in the Region 4-6A final at Doral. MORE RESULTS ▪ Region 4-2A semifinal - Westminster Christian 9, Oxbridge Academy 8: The Warriors (19-7-1) rallied from an 8-1 deficit after five innings to keep their season alive and advance to the region final. Gigi Khoury led the comeback, finishing with a home run, two doubles and six RBI. Mya Rodgers also had a two-run double and Jasmine Armenteros went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Westminster Christian will next host Florida Christian on Thursday in the Region 4-2A final. ▪ Region 4-2A semifinal - Florida Christian 4, Fort Pierce John Carroll 3 (10): Sienna Gillen pitched all 10 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out nine to lead the Patriots (19-8). Kianny Gil had two RBI and Shaun Fernandez had two hits. ▪ Region 4-5A semifinal - St. Thomas Aquinas 8, Pembroke Pines Charter 7: The Raiders (15-12) hung on for the win at home and will host Stuart South Fork on Thursday night in the regional final. Yenisett Yescas finished with five RBI for Pines Charter (12-15) and hit a bases-clearing double with one out in seventh to cut Aquinas' lead to 8-7. But the Jaguars were unable to drive Yescas home as the rally fell short. ▪ Region 4-7A semifinal - Western 3, Lake Worth Park Vista 0: Ali Solo gave up four hits over seven shutout innings, striking out five and walking one to lead the Wildcats (19-5-1). Analie Diaz hit a two-run home run and Katarina Kuma had an RBI. ▪ Region 4-7A semifinal - West Broward 11, Coral Reef 1 (6): Alivia Artanis went 2 for 4 with four RBI and Natalia Solorzano hit a three-run home run to lead the Bobcats (18-7) to the mercy-rule win over the top-seeded Barracudas (20-7) on Tuesday at Coral Reef. Ava DiFato and Victoria Carmona each had two hits and scored three runs for West Broward. DiFato also had two stolen bases. Sierra Johnson and Brianna Fields each hit doubles and Marley Blanco went 1 for 2 for Coral Reef. Sophomore Cheyanne Chaffin gave up one run in six innings, struck out six and walked three. The Bobcats will next face defending state champion Western on Thursday in the regional final. ▪ Region 4-4A semifinal - American Heritage 6, Somerset Academy 5 ▪ Region 4-4A semifinal - Key West 2, Archbishop McCarthy 1 ▪ Region 4-3A semifinal - Coral Springs Charter 12, St. Brendan 0 (5): Gio Gurgel went 2 for 2 with a home run and five RBI to lead the Panthers (23-3) over the Sabres (15-12). Mia Rodriguez and Addi Brown each had two RBI. Courtney Wahlbrink had two hits and an RBI triple and threw four no-hit innings, striking out seven. Doral softball wins battle of top teams. South Florida dominates state hoops honors. Plus more
In a battle of top unbeaten teams, the visiting Doral Academy Miami softball team shut out FHSAA defending 2A state champ Monteverde Academy 10-0. Prior to the game, Doral was ranked fourth nationally by MaxPreps. Monteverde ranked second. Winning pitcher Meagan Villazon dominated on the mound, striking out 12 while allowing no runs, five hits and two walks in a complete game 7-inning shutout effort. After four scoreless innings, the Firebirds (14-0) erupted with six runs in the top of the fifth and four more in the seventh. Anabela Abdullah hit a grand slam home run in the fifth to ignite the offensive outburst. Zoey Abdullah went 3-for-3 with a double and scored twice. State basketball honors The eight individual class finalists for the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Basketball and Boys' Basketball Coach of the Year were announced following balloting by a statewide panel of high school boys' basketball coaches and prep media members. And South Florida is very well represented with these honors, after an outstanding season in the state in boys' hoops. Every finalist was the leading vote-getter in their classification, making each the Player of the Year or Coach of the Year in their class. The two overall winners will be announced following a final round of balloting by coaches and media. Six of the state's eight classification winners (now eligible for Mr. Basketball honors) are from South Florida. They are: Cameron Boozer, Columbus, Senior, Forward, Class 7A Player of the Year: The McDonald's All-America led his team to a 27-3 record and a fourth straight Class 7A state championship by averaging 22.6 points, 12.0 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.0 steals per game. Dwayne Wimbley, St. Thomas Aquinas, Senior, Forward, Class 6A Player of the Year: Led his team to a 30-2 record and the Class 6A state championship by averaging 16.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals per game. For the upcoming state's overall coach of the year honors, five of the eligible eight classification winners are from South Florida. They are: Julius Sandi, St. Thomas Aquinas, Class 6A Coach of the Year: Led his squad to a 30-2 record and the Class 6A state championship, the school's first state title since 2001. In five seasons at Aquinas, Sandi has compiled a 109-25 record. J.R. McNabb, Blanche Ely, Class 5A Coach of the Year: In his first year as head of the Ely boys' program, McNabb led his squad to a 20-9 record and the Class 5A state championship, the school's ninth boys' state title and first since 2019. McNabb also won girls' state titles with Ely in 2020 and Somerset Academy in 2018 and 2019. Edward Schuler, Stranahan, Class 4A Coach of the Year: Led his squad to a 25-7 record and the Class 4A state title. It was the school's fourth state title in the past seven years (2019-20-22-25). In five years at Stranahan, Schuler has posted a 92-30 record. Anthony Shahbaz, Riviera Prep, Class 2A Coach of the Year: Led his squad to a 25-6 record and a third straight state title. In six years, Shahbaz has compiled a 160-60 record at Riviera Prep, including a state runner-up finish in 2022. David Roe, Sagemont, Class 1A Coach of the Year: Led his squad to a 22-8 record and a third straight state title.
