Affected travellers told to directly seek outgoing Singapore low-cost airline's help
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) has advised consumers impacted by Jetstar Asia Airways' upcoming suspension of operations to take immediate action and seek assistance directly from the airline. This follows Jetstar Group's announcement on June 11 regarding the managed cessation of its Singapore-based low-cost subsidiary Jetstar Asia (3K), which will officially cease operations on July 31. In a statement today, Mavcom urged affected travellers to reach out to Jetstar Asia through its dedicated Live Chat service or refer to its list of global contact centres at Jetstar Contact Numbers for further assistance and information regarding existing bookings. In line with the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016, Mavcom said affected consumers are entitled to a refund of the full cost of the ticket (inclusive of taxes and fees) in the original mode of payment within 30 days and entitled to rerouting to the final destination on comparable transportation. "If affected consumers do not receive these options or require further assistance, they are encouraged to contact Mavcom. "Mavcom remains committed to safeguarding the rights of air travel consumers and will continue to provide necessary assistance to those impacted by the cessation of Jetstar Asia's services," it said. Jetstar has clarified that the cessation will not impact other airlines under the Jetstar Group, including Jetstar Airways, which operates international services between Australia and Southeast Asia, or Jetstar Japan. In Malaysia, only flights operated by Jetstar Asia from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur and Penang will be affected. The airline also announced that it will directly notify customers if there are changes to scheduled flights before July 31. This is due to a planned progressive reduction in its flight schedule, leading to the cessation of services, it added.

Ascend Airways eyes November cargo ops
PETALING JAYA: Ascend Airways Malaysia, a new Malaysia-based airline and a part of Avia Solutions Group – the largest ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) provider in the world, has advanced to Phase 3 of its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) application process. The new ACMI and charter solutions provider is targeting to launch its cargo operations in November 2025, with passenger flights to follow. In 2024, Ascend Airways Malaysia was granted its Conditional Air Service Permit (CASP) from the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) and has since been working closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) in order to obtain its Air Operator Certificate (AOC). The process is currently in its final stages with full flight operations expected to commence by the end of 2025. The Kuala Lumpur-based ACMI and charter airline will offer both passenger and cargo operations. Its first B737-800 freighter aircraft will arrive in Malaysia Q3'25 to facilitate the necessary processes of the issuance of the full AOC and the launch of the airline's cargo operations. Subsequently, the second and third passenger B737-800 aircraft will be inducted into the Malaysian airline's fleet by end of 2025 and early 2026, respectively. Mavcom rolls out enhanced airline, airport performance dashboard
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) today unveiled its newly enhanced Airline and Airport Performance Dashboard, designed to provide the public and industry stakeholders with more comprehensive and detailed insights into airline and airport performance across Malaysia. Available on Mavcom's official website ( the updated dashboard introduces new features and a broader scope of performance data, incorporating both domestic and international airline operations in Malaysia, with metrics on on-time performance (OTP), flight cancellations, the various types and reasons of delays and cancellations, as well as airport performance aligned with the Airports Quality of Service (QoS) Framework. As the economic and commercial regulator for the aviation industry in Malaysia, Mavcom monitors the OTP of domestic and international flights operated by Malaysian carriers. These include AirAsia, AirAsia X, Batik Air, Firefly, Malaysia Airlines and MASwings. Airlines are required to ensure that at least 85% of their flights each month depart within 15 minutes of the scheduled time of departure (STD). In addition, airlines must operate at least 80% of their scheduled flights and monthly flight cancellations must not exceed 20%. Mavcom began publishing this performance data for the Malaysian carriers operating from KL International Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 (KUL T1 and T2) on April 15, 2024 and has since introduced enhancements to improve the accessibility and transparency of the information. Mavcom in a statement said that this newly launched interactive dashboard now provides improved data for consumers and stakeholders. Key improvements include the ability for users to access OTP and flight cancellation data for flights departing from various airports nationwide, expanding beyond the previous focus on KUL T1 and T2. The dashboard offers detailed information on the various types of delays experienced by Malaysian carriers for both domestic and international flights. Similarly, flight cancellation data is categorised by type and reason for the cancellations. Furthermore, consumers will also have the opportunity to analyse trends in OTP and flight cancellations for both domestic and international flights operated by Malaysian carriers for flights originating from Malaysian airports. Another significant enhancement to the dashboard is the inclusion of OTP and flight cancellation data for foreign carriers departing from KUL T1 and T2. If an airline fails to meet the flight cancellation targets, the airline's application for the renewal of existing services or for additional air traffic rights (ATR) with Mavcom may be affected. An ATR is required for any ASL holder intending to transport passengers, mail, or cargo for hire and reward on scheduled journeys between 2 or more locations, at least 1 of which must be in Malaysia. Aside from these metrics, airlines are mandated to adhere to the Malaysian Aviation Consumer Protection Code 2016, which outlines provisions for the protection of air travel consumers in Malaysia. Failure to do so may result in financial penalties being imposed. To date, Mavcom has imposed financial penalties totalling RM4.85 million on AirAsia Bhd, AirAsia X Bhd and Batik Air. The dashboard features airport performance metrics and results under the Airports QoS Framework. This Framework establishes standards and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for airports aimed at enhancing passenger comfort, prioritising consumer service levels, and improving the overall experience for both passengers and the wider airport community. The dashboard includes the following airports that are under the Framework: KUL T1 and T2, Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Langkawi International Airport, Kuching International Airport, Miri Airport, and Senai International Airport. These airports are assessed based on 4 service quality categories, which are passenger comfort and facilities, queuing times, passenger and baggage flows, and operator and staff facilities. The framework is set to be implemented at additional airports which are, Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport and Penang International Airport by 2025. The remaining airports will see progressive implementation until 2027, with data from these airports being added to the dashboard over time. If Mavcom's analysis of airport performance indicates non-compliance with the targets established under the Framework, a financial penalty will be imposed on the airport operator. To date, Mavcom has imposed financial penalties totalling RM4.1 million on Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd for failing to comply with the framework.

Mavcom unveils new tool to improve transparency in airline, airport performance
KUALA LUMPUR, May 5 — The Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) has introduced an advanced version of its Airline and Airport Performance Dashboard. The new dashboard includes detailed insights into the performance of both domestic and international airlines operating in Malaysia. It provides users with data on on-time performance, cancellations, delays, and reasons for disruptions in flight schedules. 'The enhanced dashboard is a testament to our commitment to increasing transparency and accountability in the aviation sector,' said Mavcom executive chairman Datuk Seri Saripuddin Kasim. The update also covers airport performance, aligned with the Airports Quality of Service (QoS) Framework. The tool features easy-to-understand metrics, including the percentage of flights departing on time and cancellations. Airlines such as AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines, and Firefly are monitored under the new system. Mavcom requires airlines to maintain a minimum of 85 per cent OTP and ensures cancellations do not exceed 20 per cent. Airlines that miss the flight cancellation targets could see their application for the renewal of existing services or for additional Air Traffic Rights (ATR) with Mavcom affected. The dashboard's interactive nature allows users to access performance data across various Malaysian airports. 'This not only benefit industry players, such as airlines and airports – by providing clear performance indicators they can use to elevate their service levels but also empowers consumers to make more informed choices when selecting their preferred carriers. 'Ultimately, our goal is to foster a greater culture of accountability among aviation operators,' Saripuddin concluded.
