Fremantle champion Matthew Pavlich emerges as leading contender to take over as AFLPA CEO
Former Fremantle captain Matthew Pavlich is a leading contender to succeed former AFL Players' Association CEO, Paul Marsh. That date has now come and gone, but the players' body remains without a full-time leader. 'The AFLPA are taking a long time to replace Paul Marsh,' Caroline Wilson told The Agenda Setters on Monday night. 'Their new chairman, Christian Hilton, is being extremely methodical about this. 'There is a shortlist that is still as long as 10 or 12 people.' Wilson said Pavlich's name is on that list, but she said there is another who is the favourite. 'Matthew Pavlich is probably the most high-profile (former) player on the list, but there are a number of (former) players on the list. 'I know that Mark Bolton was another former player that the AFLPA had searched for, and he's done a lot of work with them in the past. I don't think he has decided to throw his hat into the ring.' Mitch Cleary agreed that Pavlich was right in the mix. 'I'd have Matthew Pavlich right in the conversation,' he said. 'I think it's part of the process early on, he's just sounding out both sides of things. 'But those close to this say that Matthew Pavlich is weighing up family in Perth and business interests in the west as well.' Wilson added: 'I think it's also fair to say that he is the AFL's man. 'I think the AFL would be very happy with Matthew Pavlich, and I think that James Gallagher — who is seen as an AFL CEO-in-waiting — is another hot favourite.' Pavlich played kicked 700 goals across 353 games for Fremantle, led the club's goalkicking in eight different years, won six best and fairests, served as captain for nine years, and is a member of the Australian football Hall of Fame. Before joining North Melbourne as its general manager of strategy and legal, Gallagher spent six years at the AFLPA. He has been at the Kangaroos since 2021. He is a different James Gallagher to the one who played 38 games for Adelaide, spent time as St Kilda's list manager, and is now on the Crows' board.
