Approach high Maths failure rate in SPM systematically, says association
PETALING JAYA: A systematic approach to targeted intervention measures can help address the high Mathematics failure rate in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, says the Malaysia Association for Education. Its secretary Hamidi Mookkaiyah said that improving Mathematics pass rates requires a coordinated effort involving curriculum designers, teachers, students, parents, and policymakers. According to the SPM 2024 Examination Results Analysis Report, 84,025 candidates failed Mathematics, representing 22.4% of the 375,115 who took the subject. 'By systematically diagnosing root causes and implementing targeted interventions, the future of the country's education and development can be positively impacted,' he said in a statement on Monday (June 16). He urged comprehensive assessments through surveys, interviews, and classroom observations involving students, teachers, and parents to understand the challenges faced. 'Assess whether current teaching strategies are engaging and effective. Understand students' attitudes towards Mathematics and identify factors affecting motivation and confidence. 'Also, examine whether teachers have adequate training and resources to teach Mathematics effectively,' he said. Hamidi highlighted that socio-economic factors, like poverty, lack of parental support, or language barriers affecting learning, should also be addressed. He proposed measures to simplify and clarify the curriculum, ensuring it builds foundational skills progressively. Teachers should receive ongoing professional training, focusing on innovative and student-centred teaching methodologies. 'After-school tutoring, remedial classes, or peer-support groups can be established for struggling students. Ensure the availability of quality textbooks, practice papers, and teaching aids. 'The government and education authorities should also prioritise Mathematics education, allocate resources, and monitor progress regularly,' he said.
