Google Phone's Material 3 Expressive revamp and new call gestures are starting to roll out
Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Google has started rolling out the Phone app's Material 3 Expressive redesign on the beta channel. The updated interface brings visual changes to the in-call screen and Recent tab. It also introduces two new incoming call gesture options for the incoming call screen. Google has started rolling out the Material 3 Expressive redesign of its Phone app to some users, which we first spotted in a teardown late last month. It includes visual changes for the app's Recent tab and in-call screen, along with two new interfaces for the incoming call screen. Google Phone's Expressive makeover appears to be rolling out via a server-side update on the latest beta release (version 180.0.771769344). As shown previously, the updated in-call screen features larger UI elements, including bigger pill-shaped buttons, contact names, and caller photos. The Recent tab has also received a minor change, and the recent calls list now has a contrasting background with rounded edges. Google has also rolled out the new 'Incoming call gesture' setting to the Phone app, which lets you choose one of two new incoming call screen interfaces. If you pick the 'Single tap' gesture, the incoming call interface features 'Answer' and 'Decline' buttons that you can tap to receive or end an incoming call. The 'Horizontal swipe' gesture, on the other hand, adds a pill-shaped slider to the incoming call screen. It has a phone button in the middle and options to answer or decline the call on either side. On this interface, you can swipe the phone button to the right to receive a call or to the left to decline it. These Google Phone app changes aren't widely available, but we expect Google to roll them out soon. We'll update this post when the Phone app's Material 3 Expressive makeover hits the stable channel. Files by Google is getting a little more of that Material 3 Expressive flair (APK teardown)
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google's currently updating its Android library with Material 3 Expressive design language. Following an initial look last month, we've spotted further signs of Files by Google's M3E redesign. The app is experimenting with new, more intuitive icons and some revised screen layouts. Who doesn't love reinventing themselves with a new look for summer? When it comes to Google and its Android apps, right now that means gussying them up with a fresh dose of Material 3 Expressive design elements. While the company formally introduced that new look last month, and it's still going to be a little while before we're seeing it everywhere, we've already managed to spot early efforts to implement it across multiple Google apps. And today we're adding a little more to that growing list. Authority Insights story on Android Authority. Discover You're reading anstory on Android Authority. Discover Authority Insights for more exclusive reports, app teardowns, leaks, and in-depth tech coverage you won't find anywhere else. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. This time around, Material 3 Expressive is freshening up the look of Google's Files app for Android. If that sounds familiar, you're not wrong, as we already spotted a whole lot of Expressive UI in progress when looking at Files last month. So while some of the screens here might reflect changes we already covered then, we're also spotting further tweaks that are worth showing off. We coaxed this preview out of version 1.7853.772781075.1-release of the app, but you won't yet see these changes running it yourself. In all the image sets featured below, we have the existing layout on the left, and the in-development refresh on the right of each pair. We're starting out slow, and with these two, we're mainly interested in what Files is doing with that Floating Action Button (FAB), condensing down to a single UI element and trying on that new pill-shaped look. The app's view for moving around files is testing some new iconography, swapping its line art for a filled-in look. We notice a refreshed layout for both list and grid views, one that Google seems to be moving to consistently across the app. Here we're again turning our attention to that FAB, with an improved design to better communicate new-folder functionality. Google is also trying out an icon refresh for the way the app indicates unknown file types, as you can see on the left. Google's working on a new view for file details, and the app could end up moving to the sidebar layout we have here. That can get a bit busy, granted, but we'd argue that things like the camera details are even easier to view with the sidebar UI. We've also spotted some minor changes to font weighting in the app, but honestly, even with a side-by-side comparison the slightly bolder look Google is trying out is basically impossible to see — for now, just take our word for it. We'll keep digging into Google's future updates to Files and the rest of its Android library this summer in the hopes of uncovering more of this Material 3 Expressive progress. Got a tip? Talk to us! Finding the right editing tool in Google Photos is about to get easier (APK teardown)
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR An Android Authority teardown has revealed that the Google Photos app is getting a search button for editing tools. This will allow you to type the name of an editing tool or option to quickly access it. This search option would save time compared to manually sifting through menus to find the correct tool. We just discovered that Google Photos will get its biggest redesign in years, featuring a Material 3 Expressive visual style and functional upgrades. However, we've also uncovered a rather cool editing feature worth knowing. We dug into the Google Photos app for Android (version 7.34.0.772224975) and enabled a search button for editing tools. The search button appears in the bottom right of the edit menu (see the first image below). Tapping this search icon takes you to a separate search screen, per the second image below. The second screenshot shows that you can use a text field to type the name of the editing tool you're looking for. That means you could type 'erase' to access the Magic Eraser or type 'sharpen' for the sharpening tool. This would be a welcome addition as Google Photos offers plenty of editing tools and options. So the ability to easily find these options without manually searching through various menus would be a time-saver. This isn't the only new feature coming to Google Photos, though. In addition to the aforementioned visual redesign, the company has also started rolling out an overhauled image editor and easier album sharing. Got a tip? Talk to us! First look at the biggest Google Photos editor update in years (APK teardown)
TL;DR Google Photos is getting a completely revamped editor, with reorganized sections that make the editing flow much more intuitive. Google previously gave us a glimpse of the new design, but we've managed to dive deeper and unlock the new UI and all the functional changes. The new tool search option is perhaps one of the best new features of the new Google Photos editor. A big update is coming to Google Photos, and it's more than just a fresh coat of paint. Google is set to roll out one of the biggest redesigns the app's built-in editor has seen in years, complete with Material 3 Expressive stylings and a bunch of functional upgrades. We first caught a glimpse of the revamped editor when Google Photos celebrated its 10th anniversary, but we've now managed to dive deeper and unlock the new UI in version 7.34.0.772224975 of the Google Photos app to show you exactly what's coming, including changes that Google hasn't shown off yet. An APK teardown helps predict features that may arrive on a service in the future based on work-in-progress code. However, it is possible that such predicted features may not make it to a public release. Right off the bat, you'll notice that the Material 3 Expressive design elements are everywhere in the revamped Google Photos app. From the soft, rounded corners in the crop tool to the updated shapes for the walkthrough, tiles, and buttons, the whole interface feels more modern, friendly, and in line with Google's new design language. New editing tools layout Once you open the updated Google Photos editor, you'll notice that Google has reorganized all the existing tools into a row of new sections, which now include: Auto Actions Markup Filters Lighting Color To be clear, Google hasn't removed any tools. They've just been restructured and redistributed in the new sections. For example, the Crop tool, along with expanded cropping options, is now found under 'Actions.' Meanwhile, Tone and Color adjustments have been pulled out of the old 'Adjust' section and are now given more prominence as standalone sections at the bottom of the editor. The 'Filters' section is also getting some love. A new 'Sky styles' option lets you choose from dramatic skyline effects like Luminous, Radiant, Vivid, Ember, and more. Google has also made a minor visual tweak to the filter selection tray, making it more intuitive to adjust filter strength. The new 'Auto' section is also a welcome update. While Google had previously previewed this feature, we now have more details on how it works. When you tap Auto, you'll get three enhancement options: Enhance Dynamic AI Enhance This section is also where you'll now find tools like Portrait Blur, Erase, Move, and Reimagine. Previously, these features were tucked away in the Suggestions tab or were only accessible through the Magic Editor. Consolidating them into the 'Auto' section not only makes them easier to find but also makes the editing flow less confusing. The best new Google Photos feature! AssembleDebug / Android Authority Hands down, one of the most helpful new features of the Google Photos editor is the search button. If you're unsure where a specific editing tool is located, type its name, and the search will take you right to it without digging through menus. Given that Google is constantly adding more editing tools to the mix, a search option in Google Photos is the best thing that could have happened to the app. Overall, this Google Photos editor redesign is shaping up to be quite impressive. Google had previously said that the new and improved editor would roll out for Android users sometime in June, so you won't have to wait long to try it out. Got a tip? Talk to us! Spotted: Google Maps on Wear OS is testing an Expressive new UI
Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR Google Maps is testing a Material 3 Expressive-style redesign on Wear OS 5. The new UI features larger icons and an improved layout. The changes have only been rolled out to select users so far. Google Maps is getting a fresh look on smartwatches, and it's not waiting for Wear OS 6 to do it. The app is now testing a redesigned interface with some users on Wear OS 5, introducing a bolder, more modern layout in line with Google's Material 3 Expressive design. Screenshots and video shared with us by Telegram user Hardik show several UI changes. Captured on a Galaxy Watch 4 running Maps version 25.23.01.766241648.W, the new look features larger icons and layout choices that better suit small circular screens. Frequently used actions like 'Home,' 'Work,' and 'Recents' now appear as colorful modules, while navigation modes are presented as compact pills with clearer icons. Here's a video of the wearable in use with the new design elements: It's a noticeable departure from the old UI, which leaned heavily on minimalist icons and black menus. Where previous versions often buried options in stacked lists, the updated layout brings everything to the surface with bigger touch targets, echoing similar changes seen recently in redesigned Wear OS versions of Gmail and Keep. Check out these screenshots of the new UI: While the Maps redesign doesn't include the full theming found in the Wear OS 6 developer preview, it still reflects Google's broader push toward consistency and accessibility across its smartwatch apps. Compare the images above to how the interface currently looks for most Wear OS Google Maps users, as shown below: Google hasn't officially acknowledged the rollout, and not all users are seeing the new layout yet during this testing phase. However, with more core apps starting to follow suit, it's another sign that Google is laying the groundwork for a more unified visual experience. Got a tip? Talk to us!
