Story hits 2-run homer, Crochet goes 6 strong innings as Red Sox earn series victory over Mariners

By ANDREW DESTIN AP Sports Writer Trevor Story hit a two-run home run and Garrett Crochet pitched six innings of one-run ball as the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 3-1 on Wednesday. Story went below the strike zone to get a hold of a sinker from Mariners starter Luis Castillo (4-5) in the fourth inning and deposited it beyond the wall in left-center field to break a 1-1 tie. The Red Sox took two of three from the Mariners. Boston went in front 1-0 in the second inning on a solo shot by rookie Marcelo Mayer, but the Mariners evened the score in the bottom half of the frame when Crochet (7-4) skipped a wild pitch past home plate and Randy Arozarena scored standing up from third base. The left-hander was otherwise excellent, recording eight strikeouts while issuing no walks. He gave up six hits. Right-handed reliever Greg Weissert pitched the ninth to earn his third save, following a scoreless eighth inning from usual closer Aroldis Chapman, who retired the top of the Mariners' lineup in order. Key moment The Mariners' best chance to tack on runs came in the second inning, putting two runners aboard with one away after Arozarena scored. But Miles Mastrobuoni grounded out and Dylan Moore struck out looking to end the threat. Key stat The Red Sox have won 10 of their last 13 games, and four straight series. Up next Both the Mariners and Red Sox are off on Thursday. Seattle RHP George Kirby (1-3, 5.96 ERA) will start for the Mariners on Friday against the Chicago Cubs. RHP Hunter Dobbins (4-1, 3.74) will start for the Red Sox on Friday against the San Francisco Giants.

(AP Photo/John Froschauer) SEATTLE (AP) — Top prospect Roman Anthony hit his first major league home run and Lucas Giolito struck out 10 in six innings as the Boston Red Sox beat the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Monday night. Anthony gave Boston an early advantage during his seventh major league game, turning on a slider from Mariners starter Logan Gilbert — who was making his first appearance since coming off the injured list — for a solo shot in the first. It was Anthony's second career hit after being promoted to the big leagues June 9. Advertisement The Red Sox pushed across another run against Gilbert (1-2) in the third. Jarren Duran smacked a two-out triple and scored on a single from Abraham Toro. Gilbert was otherwise sensational, striking out 10 across five innings while yielding just three hits. The Mariners, meanwhile, struggled to do anything against Giolito (3-1), who walked one and gave up all three of his hits in the third. Justin Wilson, Greg Weissert and Aroldis Chapman finished the four-hitter. Chapman fanned all three batters in the ninth for his 13th save as the Red Sox won their first game since trading Rafael Devers. Key moment Advertisement The Mariners loaded the bases in the third on three straight singles by Dominic Canzone, Ben Williamson and Cole Young. Giolito then struck out the top three batters in Seattle's lineup: J.P. Crawford, Julio Rodríguez and Cal Raleigh. Key stat Red Sox starters have combined for 19 consecutive scoreless innings over their last three games. Up next Red Sox RHP Walker Buehler (5-4, 5.01 ERA) starts against RHP Bryan Woo (5-4, 3.39) in the middle game of the series Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/John Froschauer) SEATTLE (AP) — Prized rookie Roman Anthony hit his first major league home run for the Boston Red Sox in the first inning Monday night against the Seattle Mariners. The 21-year-old Anthony turned on a slider from Mariners starter Logan Gilbert — who was making his first appearance since coming off the injured list — and cranked it to right-center for a solo shot. The right fielder was rated the top prospect in baseball when he got called up from Triple-A Worcester last week. Advertisement Anthony began the night hitting .059 through six major league games. His home run was just his second hit since he made his debut on June 9. He was the youngest Red Sox player to debut since Rafael Devers, who was traded to the San Francisco Giants in a blockbuster deal Sunday night. A second-round draft pick, Anthony went viral this month when he hit a 497-foot grand slam for Worcester. He batted .288 with 10 homers and 29 RBIs in 58 games for the WooSox this season. ___ AP MLB:
