Urban explorers found boxes piled high with sordid images of a blonde girl with a group of men at the abandoned Victorian villa. Kayleigh Coulston and Proving Demons were left in shock at their "freaky" discoveries in the house, including a blow-up doll and horrifying masks. At several points in the video, they remark to one another that many of the items are not suitable to be shown on YouTube. In footage posted online, Kayleigh says: "Oh no - it's a sex doll. "I did not think we would find that in here. At least she is deflated! "That is so weird - so freaky. I can just tell we're going to be in for a field day at this place. "Already we've found a DVD cover which obviously I can't film and now we've found a blow-up naughty doll. "I'm trying not to film some of it because I can see on the floor there are a lot of dirty articles. "Unfortunately YouTube will not let me get away with that one." They pull out a variety of porn magazines from piles of rubbish on the floors and tables, including a copy of Loaded's 'Big Sexy Orgy' from 2003. The house - now being turned into 14 flats - was the scene of a gruesome murder in 2000. On the same day police were set to put a closure order on the building, firefighters had been called to the property after Peter Heron tried to burn the house down. The 43-year-old was jailed for 28 months after he used a blowtorch and had the gas turned on in while other tenants were still inside. In 2017, "rogue landlady" Claydon was also found guilty of allowing the property to be occupied - despite a prohibition order banning people from living there. Newton Abbot Magistrates' Court heard that residents and police officers had seen people on the site. The fire service had entered the property in November 2016 to rescue an occupant, thought to be aged in his 40s, during a fire in which a dog died. The former multiple-occupancy house has been described by local police as "a blot on the landscape". Council planners gave the nod to convert the crime-hit derelict home into flats in 2020. Work is now underway to breathe new life into the sordid site. At a planning meeting, Councillor Barbara Lewis said the property had been the source of problems for residents and the development would improve and regenerate the area. She added: 'All the residents of Keysfield Road will be delighted.'

Punjab government unveils 14-point action plan to tackle groundwater crisis; boost canal water use
CHANDIGARH: In a first, the Punjab government on Friday approved a 14-point action plan under its Integrated State Water Plan to preserve and replenish groundwater, as the state faces an annual average water table decline of 0.7 metre. Chairing a meeting of the Water Resources Department regarding the Integrated State Water Plan, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the plan has been meticulously prepared by the department in consultation with all relevant government departments. He said the situation is already alarming, with 115 out of 153 blocks in the state categorised as over-exploited in terms of groundwater extraction. The plan, he said, focuses on conserving groundwater and increasing the use of canal water for various purposes. This will be achieved by reducing groundwater demand, lowering agricultural water usage, improving irrigation techniques, and replenishing and artificially augmenting groundwater. Mann added that efforts will also focus on identifying sustainable water sources, exploring deep aquifers, and promoting the use of surface water. He noted that the government has already restored 17,000 water courses covering approximately 6,300 km, which had been abandoned for 30 to 40 years. Additionally, 79 canals spanning 545 km have also been restored. Mann approved a 14-point action plan that includes an effective irrigation strategy to ensure optimal water use in fields. The plan aims to bring around 15,79,379 hectares under water-efficient techniques such as drip and sprinkler irrigation, moving away from conventional methods to reduce net water demand and increase efficiency.

Study finds planetary waves linked to wild summer weather have tripled since 1950
By SETH BORENSTEIN Climate change has tripled the frequency of atmospheric wave events linked to extreme summer weather in the last 75 years and that may explain why long-range computer forecasts keep underestimating the surge in killer heat waves, droughts and floods, a new study says. In the 1950s, Earth averaged about one extreme weather-inducing planetary wave event a summer, but now it is getting about three per summer, according to a study in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Planetary waves are connected to 2021's deadly and unprecedented Pacific Northwest heat wave, the 2010 Russian heatwave and Pakistan flooding and the 2003 killer European heatwave, the study said. 'If you're trying to visualize the planetary waves in the northern hemisphere, the easiest way to visualize them is on the weather map to look at the waviness in the jet stream as depicted on the weather map,' said study co-author Michael Mann, a University of Pennsylvania climate scientist. Planetary waves flow across Earth all the time, but sometimes they get amplified, becoming stronger, and the jet stream gets wavier with bigger hills and valleys, Mann said. It's called quasi-resonant amplification or QRA. This essentially means the wave gets stuck for weeks on end, locked in place. As a result, some places get seemingly endless rain while others endure oppressive heat with no relief. 'A classic pattern would be like a high pressure out west (in the United States) and a low pressure back East and in summer 2018, that's exactly what we had,' Mann said. 'We had that configuration locked in place for like a month. So they (in the West) got the heat, the drought and the wildfires. We (in the East) got the excessive rainfall.' 'It's deep and it's persistent,' Mann said. 'You accumulate the rain for days on end or the ground is getting baked for days on end.' The study finds this is happening more often because of human-caused climate change, mostly from the burning of fossil fuels, specifically because the Arctic warms three to four times faster than the rest of the world. That means the temperature difference between the tropics and the Arctic is now much smaller than it used to be and that weakens the jet streams and the waves, making them more likely to get locked in place, Mann said. 'This study shines a light on yet another way human activities are disrupting the climate system that will come back to bite us all with more unprecedented and destructive summer weather events,' said Jennifer Francis, a climate scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center who wasn't involved in the research. 'Wave resonance does appear to be one reason for worsening summer extremes. On top of general warming and increased evaporation, it piles on an intermittent fluctuation in the jet stream that keeps weather systems from moving eastward as they normally would, making persistent heat, drought, and heavy rains more likely,' Francis said. This is different than Francis' research on the jet stream and the polar vortex that induces winter extremes, said Mann. There's also a natural connection. After an El Nino, a natural warming of the central Pacific that alters weather patterns worldwide, the next summer tends to be prone to more of these amplified QRA waves that become locked in place, Mann said. And since the summer of 2024 featured an El Nino, this summer will likely be more prone to this type of stuck jet stream, according to Mann. While scientists have long predicted that as the world warms there will be more extremes, the increase has been much higher than what was expected, especially by computer model simulations, Mann and Francis said. That's because the models 'are not capturing this one vital mechanism,' Mann said. Unless society stops pumping more greenhouse gases in the air, 'we can expect multiple factors to worsen summer extremes,' Francis said. 'Heat waves will last longer, grow larger and get hotter. Bhagwant Mann missing from Punjab's ‘CM di Yogshala', 21,000 others perform yoga
Jalandhar: The "CM di Yogshala" programme on Thursday drew over 21,000 participants at the PAP ground here, with the state govt claiming a new record for attendance at a single yoga event. State govt officials indicated that initial preparations were for 17,000 yoga mats, but public response "exceeded all expectations". Addressing the participants, minister Balbir Singh urged attendees to integrate yoga into their daily routines. He expressed pride in the widespread participation, stating that Punjab was on its way to regaining its "glory as a healthy and dynamic state". The minister highlighted that the initiative, launched two years ago from Jalandhar under CM Mann's leadership, now facilitates approximately 3,200 daily yoga classes across the state, benefiting nearly 100,000 people. He further noted the appointment of trained yoga instructors and credited AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal as the mastermind behind the "CM di Yogshala" initiative. Senior civil and police officials, alongside prominent AAP leaders, were also in attendance.
