'Doesn't surprise me at all': Manjrekar lauds Jaiswal's gritty hundred at Headingley
New Delhi: Former India cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar was full of praise for Yashasvi Jaiswal after the young opener produced a masterful century on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley. Speaking on JioHotstar after the opening session, Manjrekar said Jaiswal's performance was no surprise, calling him "India's best batter in Australia" and a player with a "solid Test match technique." 'This performance doesn't surprise me at all,' Manjrekar said. 'Jaiswal was India's best batter in Australia. He was the only one consistent throughout the series, showing a solid defensive technique—playing close to the body, going deep in the crease, and handling anything pitched up, especially from someone like Mitchell Starc.' Jaiswal's innings in Leeds was a continuation of that assured form. On a warm afternoon in Yorkshire, he compiled a fluent 101, becoming the first Indian batter to score centuries in his debut Tests in both Australia and England. His knock was a symphony of control and elegance, featuring crisp off-side strokeplay — only 9 of his first 100 runs came on the leg side. Jaiswal shared a crucial 123-run stand with new Test skipper Shubman Gill, who made a statement of his own, scoring his fastest Test fifty (off just 56 balls) in his first innings as captain. Gill's positive intent helped India recover from a double blow just before lunch and pushed the scoring rate comfortably above four runs an over. Deep Dasgupta, speaking alongside Manjrekar, applauded KL Rahul's innings and pointed out how England's strategy worked against debutant Sai Sudharsan. 'KL Rahul played brilliantly but the ball was swinging more when he fell. For Sai, England's team management deserves credit — they set up the field perfectly with two leg-side catchers, knowing his trigger movement,' he said. Manjrekar was equally impressed with Ben Stokes' captaincy, highlighting how England's skipper sensed Sudharsan's vulnerability and went "all in" to exploit it. 'This is what makes this series exciting. Stokes adds 20% more winning chances to England just by how he leads,' he said. Jaiswal reached his hundred with back-to-back boundaries off Brydon Carse, followed by a quick single — bringing out a triumphant helmet-off celebration and a roar of satisfaction. His second fifty came in just 48 balls before he fell to Ben Stokes just after Tea. The left-handed batter's 101-run contribution had handed India the upper hand on Day 1 of the First Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar trophy.

Did Sanjay Manjrekar take a dig at Virat Kohli during Leeds Test? Fans think so

As Manjrekar praised KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal's disciplined approach in the morning session, viewers were quick to pick up on what seemed like a veiled reference to Kohli's past struggles. England, having opted to bowl first, failed to maintain consistent lines and lengths in the opening exchanges. IND vs ENG: Did Sanjay Manjrekar take a dig at Virat Kohli in commentary? Watch video
File photo of Sanjay Manjrekar and Virat Kohli. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar seemingly made indirect comments about Virat Kohli during the commentary of the first Test match between India and England at Headingley, Leeds on June 20. The remarks came during the 21st over of India's innings when the team were 77/0, with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the crease. LIVE: India vs England 1st Test Day 1 Manjrekar's comments focused on the batting approach of the Indian openers, particularly their handling of deliveries outside the off-stump. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! While analysing the batting performance, Manjrekar initially praised the discipline shown by the Indian openers. He stressed how they were playing according to the merit of the ball despite the seemingly batting-friendly conditions. How Shubman Gill prepared for the first Test vs England in Leeds | Exclusive from Nets "Many would see this session and would think the pitch is placid. The seam bowlers haven't looked potent, one important reason it is seeing that way is these two have batted well. Potentially wicket-taking, outside the off-stump full and they have been left alone. Jaiswal has done that, anything that has pitched right up into the stump is driven anything that has pitched wide is not disturbed," Manjrekar said. The commentary took a different turn when Brydon Carse bowled a delivery on the sixth stump line to KL Rahul, who left it alone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? We know of a former batter that would have gone after it and got himself into trouble but not these two," Manjrekar remarked during the live broadcast. The reference appeared to be directed at Kohli , who had recently announced his retirement from Test cricket. The context became clearer considering Kohli's performance during India's previous tour of Australia, where he was dismissed eight out of nine times while attempting to play deliveries pitched on the fifth and sixth stump line. IND vs ENG 1st Test: Sanjay Manjrekar uses KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal for massive dig at Virat Kohli; ‘a former batter…'
Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar minced no words in taking a massive dig at retired Virat Kohli following the Shubman Gill-led side's domination in the first innings of opening day of the first innings against England on Friday in Leeds. Manjrekar's remarks came after Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul took their time in the middle to negate the England pace attack that featured the likes of Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jos Tongue and Ben Stokes. With the ball doing a bit, both Jaiswal and Rahul whatever offered wide of the off-stump. The duo added 91 runs before Rahul slashed a Carse delivery only to be caught at the first slip by Joe Root just before lunch. The Kohli reference came from India's tour of Australia earlier this year when the former India captain poked deliveries on the fourth and fifth stump lines only to see him get out eight time in nine innings in a similar fashion. Notably, the weakness really troubled Kohli for most part of his Test career. He retired from the longest format last month. On Friday, Rahul and Jaiswal showed no signs of hurry as the duo pounced on the loose deliveries for boundaries. Manjrekar, who is commentating in the series, poked at Kohli. "Deliveries outside the off stump, full, have been left alone. Jaiswal has done that. Anything that has been pitched right up into the stumps, he has driven. Anything that has been wide, he has looked to score on. KL Rahul has not touched one delivery or attempted to play one single delivery that's been full, just outside off. Anything that has been wide, he has gone with a covered drive," said Manjrekar on air. "So a lot of what you're seeing is being created by these two batters, and my hat's off to them. We know of a former batter who would have gone after that delivery and got himself into trouble. But not these two," added the former cricketer. Although Manjrekar didn't mention Kohli's name, it was certain that he pointed out at former India captain. After the Test retirements of Kohli and Rohit Sharma, India handed Sai Sudharsan a debut while also recalling Karun Nair after a huge gap of eight years. While Sudharsan was out for a duck on debut at no.3, new captain Shubman Gill batted at no.4 (Kohli's batting position), followed by vice-captain Rishabh Pant. Nair, all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur follow.

Sanjay Manjrekar Makes Big 'Pressure' Statement On Shubman Gill, Says: "Nothing To..."
Shubman Gill is all set to become India's youngest captain in the 21st century in the first Test against England, beginning from June 20. Gill, at the age of 25, has been viewed as the long-term captaincy prospect following the retirement of Rohit Sharma from Test cricket. While it is impossible to not carry the weight of expectation on your shoulders, former India cricketer and reputed pundit Sanjay Manjrekar believes that Gill won't feel the pressure. He also suggested that head coach Gautam Gambhir will share a better relationship with Gill than he did with Rohit. "The advantage that Shubman Gill has is that they have nothing to lose. The big names have gone, Jasprit Bumrah is not the captain, it's almost like he had to do the job. So he's not going to feel the pressure," Manjrekar said, speaking on ESPNcricinfo. "Because the selectors have made such a big call, they'll back him and be supportive," Manjrekar added. Manjrekar also explained why he feels Gambhir will enjoy working with Gill. "Gautam Gambhir, as coach, will enjoy a young captain with him. You can see him as coach when he's with Suryakumar Yadav as India captain versus him with Rohit Sharma. There is going to be a better relationship between the captain and the coach," Manjrekar reasoned. Shubman Gill is embracing the challenge of England's ever-changing weather as he prepares to lead India for the first time in a Test series, while senior batter KL Rahul is equally enthusiastic about playing in English conditions. The five-Test series starting at Headingley on Friday marks a generational shift in Indian cricket, with Gill taking over as the new red-ball captain. Veterans Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin are no longer part of the Test setup, having announced their retirements. From the old guard, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Rahul, Rishabh Pant, who is the vice-captain, remain, providing a blend of experience alongside the new leadership group. In a video shared by the BCCI on 'X', several Indian players, including skipper Gill, shared what comes to mind when they think of playing in England. "Dukes ball, that's number one. The weather, which is always changing, that's exciting and tough. And just the atmosphere of the crowd," Gill said. Rahul added: "Playing Test cricket here excites me. The English summer here is different from what we get back home, it's something that I enjoy playing cricket in. When the sun is out it's great to play cricket. The third thing is the options for restaurants and food."
