A Week After Air India Crash, Victims' Families Want Accountability

Diu: A week after the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad that claimed 241 lives, grieving families are demanding answers from authorities. While investigations continue, many are asking why the cause of the crash remains unclear and why no one has been held accountable yet. The Boeing Dreamliner 787-8, bound for London, had crashed seconds after take-off. Only one passenger had survived. The crash had also killed 33 people on the ground. The black box recovered from the plane has been found damaged. Sources said It might have to be sent to the US for data extraction. "We deserve to know what happened". In Diu, the brother of Manish Babu, who died in the crash, is struggling with the lack of information and accountability. Manish, originally from Diu, was working at a food factory in the UK and had returned to India to visit family. He is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter. "Why has no one been held responsible yet? Why don't we know what caused the crash?" his brother asked while speaking to NDTV. "His children have been left without a father, and his wife is inconsolable. We deserve answers," he added. Last rites amid unanswered questions At the cremation ground in Diu, the family of Chandu Bagune, a Portuguese national who also died in the crash, performed his last rites. He is survived by his wife and three children. His relatives, still reeling from the shock, have voiced serious concerns about the lack of communication from authorities. "We want to know what led to the crash. Who is responsible? Where is the accountability?" a relative, Ashwin Bagune, told NDTV from the cremation site. Portuguese couple came for Kumbh Mela Among the victims were Devji Lacmane and Vanita Cana, a Portuguese couple who had travelled to India for the Kumbh Mela. After the pilgrimage, they extended their stay in Diu with family. Their sudden loss has left the community stunned. "It has been a week, and we still don't know why the crash happened," said Ashvin Dhiru, a family member. "Maybe it was just our bad time... but no one else should suffer like this. The government and the airline authorities must take responsibility. We need answers-and accountability-so that the real cause is known and such tragedies are prevented in the future," he added.

'All rides cancelled on me': Uber driver demands extra cash from Swedish tourist; leaves him on highway

A Swedish tourist's post about an alleged scam during his Uber ride in India has triggered a fresh round of online criticism towards the ride-hailing giant. Content creator Jonas, who goes by @iamjonasax on Instagram, detailed the incident in a recent post while touring the country. He wrote that after booking an Uber Intercity ride, things took a turn when the driver abruptly stopped in the middle of a busy highway and claimed the vehicle had broken down. 'Manish really wanted those rupees,' Jonas wrote in the caption, hinting the driver's motive. He added, 'Called @uber_india, they sorted me out with not one, not two but three replacement rides, all canceled on me (I assume as I was on the highway). Got home all well no thanks to Uber, with another story to tell.' The post quickly gathered traction, drawing reactions from users who shared similar experiences or offered advice. 'I usually take screenshots of drivers whenever they accept the ride and if they cancel for any reason, I post complaints on Twitter,' one user commented. Another suggested, 'You can file a complaint on Uber and they'll refund the money you spent and take action on the taxi driver for doing this cheap act.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What She Did Mid-Air Left Passengers Speechless medalmerit Learn More Undo Uber responded to Jonas's complaint, saying, 'Hi Jonas, we apologise for this frustrating experience. Two held for supplying SIM cards and synthetic bank accounts to sextortion racket

New Delhi, The Delhi Police has arrested two people linked to a pan-India cyber crime syndicate engaged in sextortion and banking frauds, an official said on Wednesday. The accused, identified as Manish and Vipin Kumar, played key roles in enabling the racket by supplying SIM cards and synthetic bank accounts to cyber criminals, he said. Manish, a point-of-sale agent for a mobile SIM outlet, was arrested for allegedly issuing SIM cards using manipulated biometric data. He fraudulently activated SIM cards on Aadhaar identities without the knowledge of customers and supplied them to cyber criminals. The official said five active SIM cards were recovered from Manish, who was found to have links to Ujjwal Pandey, who was arrested earlier. Another accused, Vipin Kumar , a resident of Alwar in Rajasthan, was arrested near the RK Ashram Metro Station while delivering a synthetic bank account kit. The official said he supplied at least eight such accounts, including three in his own name. Vipin told police that he was recruited via social media and was promised 20 per cent commission per transaction, along with perks like free travel and luxury stays. He admitted to earning nearly ₹6 lakh from this activity, which he used to fund a lavish lifestyle, the official added. According to police, the recovered SIMs and accounts have been linked to at least 60 cyber crime complaints registered across India through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. Four FIRs have also been traced to the mobile numbers recovered. The official said that earlier this month, the Delhi Police has busted a sextortion and cyber fraud racket, spanning across multiple states, and have arrested six people. A money trail of over ₹5 crore was identified by different crime branch teams. Police said they received information on May 24 regarding the movement of a consignment suspected to contain synthetic bank account kits in New Ashok Nagar area. These kits to be delivered and distributed near the Mayur Vihar Phase 1 Extension were reportedly being used in various high-tech crimes such as sextortion, cyber fraud, banking scams, and debit and credit card cloning. Acting on the tip-off, the police had arrested Ujjwal Pandey , Gaurav Barua and Yug Sharma . Synthetic bank account kits, pre-activated SIM cards, forged bank documents, debit and credit cards linked to dummy or fraudulent accounts, and mobile devices for real-time transaction control was recovered from them.

Check your tickets! Officials on the hunt for $100million Powerball winner almost a week after epic draw

The winner of last week's $100million Powerball is yet to claim their prize, as lottery officials race to track the new millionaire down. Bondi Junction Newsagency and Internet Café, in Sydney 's east, sold the winning ticket ahead of last Thursday's draw. The ticket was the sole winner of the $100million jackpot with the numbers 28, 10, 3, 16, 31, 14, and 21. The Powerball number last week was 6. The Lott spokesperson Anna Hobdell said the mystery winner had six years to claim the ticket, but was hopeful they would come forward soon. Most Division One winners typically make contact within two weeks of the draw. 'Someone out there is walking around with a ticket worth $100million, and they might not even know it,' Ms Hobdell said. 'Thankfully most winners come forward within a week or two, and we hope this is the case for this division one winner.' The Lott suggested customers register their tickets so they can be contacted by officials in the case of a big win. 'This is also an important reminder for players to always register their lottery tickets to a player card or online account with The Lott Members Club, so if they are to score a major prize, we can reach out to them with the life-changing news,' Ms Hobdell said. Manish, the owner of the newsagency on Oxford Street, Bondi Junction, said his staff were 'thrilled' to hear the news. 'This is by far the biggest winning entry we've ever sold,' shop owner Manish said. 'The team are thrilled to hear the winning news. I'll be rewarding the particular staff member who sold the winning ticket too. 'I'm hoping it's one of our regular customers, but you never know, it could be a tourist too. 'We're located right next to the closest station to Bondi Beach, so you never know.' The huge win came after approximately half of all adult Australians bought an entry into the draw last Thursday. There were six winners of division two, with each pocketing $282,415, and there were 187 division three winners who took home $11,265. The last time Powerball offered a $100million prize, in November 2024, a flurry of Australians bought tickets and on the day of the draw 6,415 tickets were being sold every minute. Previous Lotto wins have gone unclaimed for months. Back in 2018, the winner of a $55million Powerball jackpot did not claim their prize for almost 175 days. Last week, the winner of a TattsLotto draw in Victoria claimed a $2.1million prize six months after his wife tucked the winning ticket into a Christmas card. The man from Wonthaggi, in the South Gippsland region, was one of the 14 Division One winners to score a $30million mega draw. He explained to officials his ticket went unchecked for 'months' as 'life got in the way'. 'My wife always buys a lottery ticket for everyone in the family for Christmas,' he said.
