A Netflix film based on a real-life murder rocks to the top of charts as impressed viewers gushed 'bravo to everyone involved!' Spanish crime drama film A Widow's Game, directed by Carlos Sedes, hit the streaming service last month. Netflix's synopsis reads: 'When a man is found dead, the investigation shatters his widow's perfect facade and exposes a hidden double life in this thriller based on real events.' The movie is also based on the true story of the murder of Antionio Navaarro Cerdán, 6, back in 2017, leaving his nurse wife María Jesús Moreno Cantó, also known as Maje, behind - who was also having secret affairs behind his back. And real life footage from the case is used in A Widow's Game. Engineer Antionio was stabbed in a garage in the district of Patraix in Valencia. It was later revealed that Maje had joined forces with a janitor at her hospital called Salvador Rodrigo Lapiedra to carry out the crime - who she was having an affair with. A Widow's Game stars Ivana Baquero as Maje, Tristran Ulloa as Salva Rodrigo, Carmen Machi as Eva, Joel Sánchez as Daniel as Álex Gadea as Antonio. They are joined by Pablo Molinero, Pepe Ocio, Ramón Ródenas, Amparo Fernández and Miquel Mars. And many have rushed to IMDB to share their positive thoughts on the movie. 'The film's overall story about manipulation in love was well-told.' 'Intrigued me from the start and by the end I was engrossed.' 'I am Spaniard so I have watched this one without subtitles, what is a plus. So, If you love Spanish series like "El cuerpo en llamas", A Widow's Game is for you. The movie is amazingly real as cruel the case it is. 'First, the case is sad and at the same time makes you think about how cruel a woman can be. 'Second, cast is superb. Great acting from Tristan Ulloa and Carmen Machi. Ivana Baquero is great too. Last, the settings and production are superb. Pretty close to reality. 'Around 95% of the movie happened. Salvador and Maje were arrested in January 2018 and later both found guilty of murder in October 2020. Maje received a 22 year sentence, while Salvador was given 17 years, and also had to pay €250,000 to Antionio's family. She also gave birth to a baby in prison in 2023 after falling pregnant with an inmate's baby.

Netflix thriller shoots to top of the charts despite ‘underwhelming' reviews
A murder mystery film is currently at the top of Netflix's movie chart - but is it worth watching? Netflix's new murder mystery film is currently dominating the streaming charts, despite receiving mixed reviews from critics. Hailing from Spain, this intriguing thriller stars a familiar face who becomes embroiled in a high-profile murder case. A Widow's Game features Pan's Labyrinth's child star Ivana Baquero, now all grown up as Maje, the wife of murder victim Antonio Navarro Cerdán. Carmen Machi, Tristán Ulloa, Pablo Molinero, Pepe Ocio and Álex Gadea also star. Based on a real-life murder in 2017, Maje becomes the prime suspect in the fatal stabbing and the sensational headlines expose her private life. A synopsis reads: 'When a man is found dead, the investigation shatters his widow's perfect facade and exposes a hidden double life in this thriller based on real events." This true crime drama unfortunately hasn't been a hit with critics, but Netflix subscribers clearly can't get enough as it's currently at the top of the streamer's film chart worldwide. Collider admitted the thriller 'doesn't really hit the mark', calling it an "underwhelming whodunnit". Decider called it 'a slightly-better-than-middling drama, professionally executed from a technical standpoint but a bit thin of screenplay.' And LeisureByte said in their mixed review: 'I enjoyed watching A Widow's Game, although I found myself a little confused with the documentary/fictional style of the storytelling. I felt like it clashed a bit and left to mystery in the middle. 'However, it's the performances and the characters' complexities that shine for me.' Despite the middling professional reviews, some subscribers have been captivated by the stunning investigation. A four-star Google review says: 'Despite these minor flaws, A Widow's Game succeeds in keeping audiences engaged. 'The strong performances, solid writing, and the eerie fact that it may be based on true events make it a worthy watch for crime drama fans. It's a chilling reminder that truth can sometimes be more unsettling than fiction.' While a five-star review took the praise a step further: 'A Widow's Game is an absolute masterclass in storytelling, direction, and performance. 'Based on a true event, this gripping film pulls you into its web of intrigue from the very first scene and doesn't let go until the final frame.' But it isn't that simple. The woman who kept spinning stories was, in fact, living a double life herself, involved in multiple affairs while still married. With each new affair, she managed to invent new lies to maintain her facade. Now that you know a bit of the background, let's take a look at how the movie ended. Why did Maje want to kill her husband? Well, Maje and her husband were two very different people. While Arturo was a family man, Maje wanted more from life. Let's just say she craved excitement and thrill, and being with Arturo didn't fulfill her in any way. That's why she went on to have multiple affairs and eventually planned to kill her husband with her lover, Salva. How were Maje and Salva caught? The investigators had been tapping Maje and Salva's phones for a while, and they eventually recorded conversations that confirmed their suspicions. The police also planted a microphone inside a tissue box during one of Maje and Salva's meetings, which further proved their guilt. Both were arrested, and as previously agreed, Maje denied any involvement in the murder while Salva took full responsibility. However, Salva later revealed that Maje had manipulated him into committing the crime. As a result, Maje was sentenced to 22 years in prison, while Salva received 17 years.
