Tower, statue and park named after Vidyapati opened in Madhubani's Benipatti

Madhubani: Benipatti BJP MLA Vinod Narayan Jha inaugurated a tower, a statue, and a park dedicated to Vidyapati near Samsari Pokhar at Benipatti in Madhubani district on Wednesday. Constructed at a cost of Rs20 lakh, of which Rs14.5 lakhs was allocated from the local area discretionary fund, the initiative aims to honour the legacy of Vidyapati, a revered Maithili poet and scholar. Addressing the inaugural function held at Benipatti on Wednesday, Jha said Vidyapati (1352–1448), known as Maithil Kavi Kokil, was a Sanskrit polymath, poet, and playwright. Born to a Maithil Brahmin family, his name, meaning "master of knowledge,". It reflects his scholarly prowess in Sanskrit, Prakrit, Apabhramsha, and Maithili, Jha said. Vinod Narain Jha further said that Vidyapati served as a court poet and priest under the Oiniwar dynasty, notably for kings Kīrttisiṃha, Devasimha, and Sivasimha, with whom he shared a close friendship. His works include the praise-poem Kīrtilatā, the prose Bhūparikramaṇa, and over 500 love songs about Radha and Krishna (1380–1406), which shaped Maithili literature and influenced Bengali, Assamese, and Oriya traditions, Jha added. Prominent among others who addressed the gathering included former president of Chetna Samiti Vijay Kumar Thakur; its present secretary and treasurer, Umesh Mishra and Jaydeva Mishra, respectively. A prominent Maithili litterateur Rangnath Diwakar, senior BJP leader Hitendra Thakur and others were also present. ‘Dual nationality row': Newton Das to be struck off Bengal voter list soon

The process of removing 'Kakdwip voter' Newton Das from the electoral roll has commenced, confirmed sources in the office of the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer on Sunday. The decision follows a probe into allegations linking Das, a registered voter in the Kakdwip Assembly constituency, to protests in Bangladesh as a voter there, raising questions about his nationality. A relative of Das also claimed that he has voter cards of both India and Bangladesh. Das, 32, has been at the centre of a political storm after images surfaced showing him participating in the student-led agitation in Dhaka in July 2024, which ultimately led to the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina government. These images depict Das wielding a stick and waving a flag during the protests, prompting the Opposition BJP in West Bengal to question how an individual actively involved in a political movement in Bangladesh could simultaneously hold voting rights in India. Electoral records indicate that Das has been a voter in Kakdwip, which falls under the Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituency, since 2014. He has reportedly claimed to have exercised his franchise in the 2016 Assembly elections. The CEO had previously directed the district electoral officer of the South 24 Parganas to investigate and report on Das's alleged dual nationality. This development comes as West Bengal prepares for high-stakes Assembly elections next year. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay hospitalised in Kolkata with acute pancreatitis

West Bengal BJP MP and former Calcutta High Court judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay was admitted to a private hospital in Kolkata Saturday after complaining of abdominal pain. Gangopadhyay, 63, is being treated in the intensive care unit for acute pancreatitis with gastrointestinal sepsis. A Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital official stated that the MP was admitted after he experienced slight discomfort. Investigations are ongoing to evaluate his condition and a team of doctors is closely monitoring him, said the official. 'Member of Parliament and former Calcutta High Court judge Mr Abhijit Gangopadhyay, 63, got admitted at Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital on Saturday, with complaints of vomiting, abdominal pain, and abdominal distension. Investigations have indicated acute pancreatitis with gastrointestinal sepsis. Currently, Mr Gangopadhyay remains under close observation in the ICU. He is stable but critically ill and under continuous monitoring. A multidisciplinary medical board, comprising internal medicine and critical care specialist, cardiologist, pulmonologist, endocrinologist, gastroenterologist and GI surgeon, has been formed to ensure comprehensive and coordinated management of his condition,' read a statement issued by Rupak Barua, managing director and CEO Woodlands Multispeciality Hospital. Gangopadhyay resigned as Calcutta High Court judge in March last year and joined the BJP later. He won the 2024 Lol Sabha election from the Tamluk Lok Sabha seat in the East Medinipur district of Bengal. Even before his resignation as a judge, Gangopadhyay had several run-ins with the ruling Trinamool Congress (BJP) government for almost two years. A high court judge since May 2018, Justice Gangopadhyay sparked rows by ignoring orders of larger nenches, giving an interview to a television channel, and issuing directions to the Supreme Court registry. From 2022, he passed several orders directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to investigate the alleged school jobs scam in West Bengal. The alleged scam saw Justice Gangopadhyay order CBI investigations and terminating more than 32,000 appointments of teachers. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express. Bengal: 2 days after clash, uneasy calm as Rabindranagar returns to normalcy

AN UNEASY calm prevails in Rabindranagar and surrounding areas, including Maheshtala, days after Wednesday's clashes. Residents remain largely indoors, with shops and markets shut, as a massive police deployment keeps a tight vigil over the affected localities. Prohibitory orders are still in place. 'Shops are still shut, markets too,' said Praveen Sharma, a youth residing near the Akra fish market. The violence, which erupted on Wednesday afternoon in Maheshtala under the Rabindranagar police station limits, resulted in injuries to many. According to sources, the flashpoint was an attempt to construct a 'tulsi mancha' (a platform for a sacred basil plant) at a site where a fruit seller, a member of a minority community, previously had a thela shop. The dispute quickly escalated into a skirmish between two groups, leading to widespread vandalism, brick-pelting and attacks on police personnel. Several police vehicles were damaged and at least five police personnel suffered injuries. A large number of personnel from various police stations, including those from Akra Station to Baratola, have been deployed across the Rabindranagar police station area since Thursday. Round-the-clock patrolling and loudspeaker announcements are being conducted to reassure residents and deter any further disturbances. Areas that witnessed vandalism and brick-pelting have been cleaned up, police sources said. So far, a total of 40 people have been arrested in connection with the clashes in Maheshtala. While 28 arrests were made by the police in South 24 Parganas district, 12 were made by the Kolkata Police. Authorities anticipate that the number of arrests will rise as police are likely to conduct special drives to apprehend more trouble-mongers. The police have issued warnings against rumor-mongering and said strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to incite unrest. 'Sustained police presence and ongoing probe aim to restore complete normalcy,' said an officer. Sweety Kumari reports from West Bengal for The Indian Express.
