Warning greedy airlines can legally 'bump' people from flights with no notice

Following a dispute a Ryanair passenger had with the airline when he asked to give up their place on the flight, a travel expert has offered detail on how such airlines exploit loopholes Greedy airlines can legally "bump" passengers - move them onto other services without their permission - when they overbook flights, a travel expert has warned. Passengers are not guaranteed a seat even when they book one, the professional confirmed, following recent disputes around the practice. One Ryanair passenger was moved onto another flight after the airline switched planes from a Boeing 737-8200 to a 737-800, which has eight less seats. ‌ But Scott McCormick and his girlfriend Helena Boshwick, from Birmingham, "hadn't reserved seats" for the two-hour trip to Palma de Mallorca, Spain, something travel expert Rory Boland recommends. However, he added airlines passengers are not guaranteed a seat even when they book one. ‌ Mr Boland, travel editor at consumer group Which?, said: "Sometimes a last minute change of aircraft might mean less seats available than planned for, in other cases some airlines actively overbook, betting on 'no shows' to balance things out, while maxing their profits by charging for more seats than the plane can actually accommodate. If an airline ends up with too many people at the gate, it can't just bump someone from the flight because they didn't pay extra to reserve a specific seat." Speaking to Mail Online, he continued: "So long as the flight is either departing the UK, or flying into the UK on a UK or EU based airline, the airline is legally obliged to ask for volunteers before resorting to forcibly denying boarding. "If you volunteer then you surrender your right to statutory compensation, so you should make sure you're happy with the amount you negotiate - at a minimum be sure to get at least get the amount you would be owed if the flight was cancelled - which would be up to £520 each for a long-haul flight, or less for a short-haul journey. "If there are no volunteers, only then an airline can choose to deny a passenger boarding. Anyone who is bumped from a plane should have their flight rebooked as quickly as possible, and be paid cancellation compensation." Those who volunteer to be bumped on a flight must agree compensation with the airline, which will often make an announcement at the gate offering cash or vouchers. Passengers in such cases are also entitled to an alternative flight or a refund. ‌ Mr McCormick and Miss Boshwick, both 33, did not book seats, it is understood, because they did not mind sitting apart on the two-hour flight. Because of this, Mr McCormick and Miss Boshwick were each assigned a random seat free of charge upon checking in, which they did online before departure. Responding in relation to the couple's complaint, a Ryanair spokesman said: "This flight from Birmingham to Palma de Mallorca (May 1) was not 'overbooked' - it was scheduled to operate on a 737-8200 (197 seats) but for operational reasons had to be swapped to a 737-800 aircraft (189 seats). "As a result, 1 passenger was unable to travel on this flight, and was reaccommodated onto the next available flight to Palma de Mallorca. "Mr McCormick's travel companion was not refused boarding but chose not to board and travel on this flight from Birmingham to Palma de Mallorca and was required to pay a Missed Departure fee (£100) to be booked onto the next available flight. "Mr McCormick was notified by email on the day of travel (May 1) that he was entitled to claim back reasonable receipted expenses, however Mr McCormick has yet to submit any expense receipts to Ryanair."

Schoolboy who murdered Ava White in petty social media row is finally unmasked

As Harry Gilbertson turns 18 today, he can now be named as the vicious killer of Ava White, who was stabbed outside Primark in Liverpool city centre moments after the Christmas lights switch-on This is the schoolboy who murdered 12-year-old girl Ava White in a petty row over social media videos. Harry Gilbertson has been named and pictured for the first time because he turns 18 today - Friday June 20 - more than three-and-a-half years after he killed Ava. He stabbed the girl in the neck following an altercation moments after a Christmas lights switch-on in Liverpool city centre. ‌ Gilbertson denied the murder charge but was convicted by a jury in May 2022. He was just 14 at the time of the offence, and 15 when he was jailed for a minimum of 13 years - and so therefore reporting restrictions meant the press was unable to identity the youngster. These cease today, though, because Gilbertson has reached adulthood. ‌ Reacting to this, Ava's mother, Leeann White, 42, told Mail Online: "It is important the public know who he is. The public know everything about Ava – her name was splashed everywhere when she died. Why shouldn't everyone know what he did? Why should he be protected? "He was the one in the wrong, he was the one who went out that night with a knife... I know he was only a child himself when it happened but children know right from wrong and my child knew not to pick up a knife and stab someone." READ MORE: Ava White's mum 'thought there'd been a mistake' when told daughter, 12, had been stabbed The stabbing in November 2021 happened after Ava and her friends were approached by a group of boys. A verbal argument followed after one of the boys filmed them, which he later shared on social media site Snapchat. Ava told the boy to stop filming and delete the video and, after the argument continued, Ava was stabbed in the neck with a flick knife. She was rushed to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, where she sadly died a short time later despite the best efforts of medical staff. Since he was sentenced, Gilbertson has been brazenly flaunting rules while inside his secure unit. The picture above shows the now 18-year-old posing for photos published on Snapchat, reports Liverpool Echo. ‌ Speaking to the Echo, Leeann added: "The picture was taken on Snapchat. The same social media that he posted the video of Ava on before he murdered her. He has never shown any remorse... I don't call him by his name. I call him the monster." The ECHO has approached the Ministry of Justice for comment regarding Gilbertson's appearance on social media while in detention. In the picture shared on Snapchat, Gilbertson, with cropped brown hair and a blue Montirex tracksuit top, stands with his muscular arms crossed, while an unknown associate wearing a grey Nike tracksuit puts up his middle finger to the camera. Merseyside Police and other forces have - and continue to - conduct open land searches, stop searches and carry out targeted operations to attempt to take knives off the streets. However, data from NHS Digital shows there were 3,900 "hospital episodes" recorded in English hospitals in 2023/24 due to assault by a sharp object. This was a 3.3% increase compared to 2022/23, and a 7% increase compared to 2014/15.

Girl, 7, dies in Iran missile strike while in Israel for cancer treatment

The family of seven-year-old Nastya Buryk were staying in Bat Yam in Israel while she underwent cancer treatment when their appartment block was hit by a missile A seven-year-old girl has tragically died this week after getting caught up in the Iran missile strike. Israel has been launching missiles at Iran in an attempt to cripple its nuclear capabilities since last Friday, and US President Donald Trump was thinking about getting involved. But, Trump dramatically stepped back from the brink last night as Britain prepared to take part in peace talks with Iran. ‌ Yesterday Iranian missiles crashed into a major hospital in southern Israel and hit residential buildings near Tel Aviv, wounding at least 240 people, around 15km away a missile also struck Bat Yam where the family of a young girl were staying while she underwent treatment. ‌ Nastya Buryk, from Odesa in Ukraine, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer on August 29, 2022 and she underwent her first course of chemotherapy in Ukraine. Nastya's condition improved, but then she suffered a relapse. She needed more specialist treatment, so with some help from charitable donations, but largely self-funded, her family decided to try and seek treatment in Isal in December 2022. In Israel, Nastya underwent a bone marrow transplant. Sadly, the procedure did not work, and the leukaemia returned. But a new treatment to encourage the failed bone marrow transplant to work offered Nastya's family hope again. Earlier this year Nastya's mother Maria decided to give the new treatment a chance. Nastya's grandmother Olena, 60, flew out to Israel to lend her support. She brought with her two of Nastya's cousins, Konstantin and Ilya, aged nine and seven, who enrolled in local infant schools, reports MailOnline. ‌ Should the UK get involved in the Iran-Israel conflict? One week on there continus to be intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel,as both nations continue to exchange fire in what has become the region's most volatile standoff in years. ‌ Last night, Iran boasted that all its nuclear material had been moved to 'a safe place' before Israeli missiles struck its nuclear sites. Iranian commander Mohsen Rezaei said: "'Israel hit Natanz, Isfahan, Khandab, and Arak, but they were already evacuated. All the materials have been moved to a safe place." Iran retaliated with volleys of missiles and drones at Israel. On the first day of the barrage, June 13, one of those missiles struck the apartment block in the coastal city of Bat Yam where Nastya's family had been staying. Nastya, her mother, grandmother and the two boys, were all tragically killed in the blast. Only Nastya's father Artem, who is fighting on the front line in Kyiv, remains alive.
