Murwillumbah preview, tips: Ethan Ensby's Rainbow Lass chases hat-trick

In-form mare Rainbow Lass isn't just chasing a hat-trick of wins, she is on trial for a possible feature race target at next month's Grafton carnival. Following two solid wins over 1000m and 1200m on her home track at Casino, trainer Ethan Ensby feels to time is right to test Rainbow Lass over a longer distance in the Benchmark 58 Handicap (1550m). 'She is going enormous at the moment,' said Ensby. 'She is obviously stepping up to the 1500m for the first time and being by Pariah, she probably isn't bred to get that far but at home, my partner rides her work and she is showing us she is that 1400m to a mile type. 'She sat three-wide working up the hill at Casino over the 1200 metres last start which is like running 1300 or 1400 metres. The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'She does like a wet track so the Soft 7 will suit her. My only concerns are the weight, she carriers 58.5kg after Izzy's (Neale) claim, and the gate if she happens to blow the start like she has been known to do. 'If she gets out and into a good position, she should be very competitive. 'If she happens to win this race, I might aim her at the Grafton Guineas.' Ensby is looking forward to seeing Mahuika Maroi make her race debut in the Country Boosted Maiden Handicap (1200m). The three-year-old has been safely beaten in both her barrier trials but Ensby said things didn't go as he'd hoped on either occasion. 'When she trialled at the Gold Coast, it was supposed to be on the B Grass but they switched to polytrack which I wasn't very happy about. 'I didn't want to trial on the poly but with the weather the way it was, she had to go around and use it as a bit of a gallop and hope for the best. 'She wasn't put under any pressure that day. 'We then went to Grafton for her next trial and she slipped coming out of the gates on the wet track and tweaked a muscle hence while it's been a while until her first start. 'She finds a really nice race start off in and although the 1200 metres will be short of her best, I think she will run a nice race with the expectation she will be better for it.' Ensby has Shez Mysterious and Gold Puma in the Maiden Handicap (1550m) but is leaning towards splitting the pair and saving the later for either Port Macquarie or Lismore during the week. Shez Mysterious failed on her home track on May 30 but Ensby feels it is worth forgetting that run and judge her on her first two starts. The daughter of So You Think debuted with a fourth to Rainbow Lass on a Heavy 10 at Casino before coming from a conspicuous last when beaten just over a length in fourth place at Inverell on May 23. 'I think the heavy track and the quick back-up went against her last start. She just didn't handle it,' he said. 'I think it would pay to forgive her for that. 'I've given her a bit of time since then and the beauty of training at the farm is it allows me to put her out during the day. 'He first-up run at Casino was encouraging then second-up, she stood like a deer in the headlights in the barrier at Inverell and came out a clear last. 'She really closed of strongly though. 'I give her a really good chance with Ben Looker on board from barrier 1.' ADAM SHERRY'S TOP SELECTIONS BEST BET Race 6 No. 1: SAXINOUE Unbeaten second-up and steps up to a suitable trip. Led and kicked away to win by nearly four lengths. Will take plenty of confidence out of that. ODETTE'S ORCHID (6) likes to lead or be right up on speed. Forced to settled near midfield when last on a Heavy 10 at Ballina first-up. Will be fitter for the run, appreciate a firmer track and can bounce back. ALL ABOUT ARTIE (5) has had a long campaign which started with a win at Ipswich in January and he continues to race well. Was a three-quarter length third at Warwick two starts back before a half-length second to Monastery at Ballina. Form stable chases winning treble at Hawkesbury

The form stable of John O'Shea and Tom Charlton are poised to continue their successful run when they head to Hawkesbury on Tuesday. The pair combined to quinella last week's Group 1 Queensland Derby with Maison Louis accounting for King Of Thunder. They won with Livin' Thing on the Kensington track at Randwick on Wednesday and backed that up with Unusual Suspect scoring at Gosford on Thursday. O'Shea and Charlton have three runners set to start at Hawkesbury with Celtic Sin down to contest the Blakes Marine Class 1 Handicap (1500m) with Andrew Adkins taking the ride. O'Shea and Charlton also have a runner in the Irresistible Pools & Spa Benchmark 64 Handicap (1800m). Zac Lloyd is booked to ride Hovland in that middle-distance event. 'Celtic Sin won well at Wyong when resuming from a spell,' O'Shea said. 'She put a good margin in them in that event. If she can repeat that effort, she will be hard to hold out again on Tuesday.' Hovland has the advantage of gate one in his event and was only just edged out at Gosford in his latest start. 'Hovland is a talented horse,' O'Shea said. 'He's only had the four starts, and he won well at Hawkesbury at his second start. His start effort at Gosford was good and he is ready to run well again.' Local trainer Brad Widdup also has a number of top chances set to go around at the Hawkesbury meeting. Widdup has Reverberates (Zac Wadick) and Jump In The Line (Dylan Gibbons) in the St Johns Park Bowling Club Maiden Handicap (1800m), while Tommy Berry will partner The Grey in the Clarendon Tavern Benchmark 64 Handicap (1100m). Reverberates and Jump In The Line are both coming out of the same Provincial Maiden at Wyong in which they finished second and third respectively. Loading

Malton filly has a bright future after passing latest test at Redcar Races

MALTON trainer Tim Easterby's two-year-olds are flying and he was clearly impressed after Bleep Test justified favouritism at Redcar today. 'She's got a lot of potential,' said the trainer after the Time Test filly stayed on strongly under David Allan to hold off Ollie Sangster's well-backed Lovethiswayagain and Jamie Spencer in the opening EBF Restricted Maiden Fillies' Stakes. The first two pulled well clear of the rest and both look nice fillies, with the winner running in the colours of the Reality Partnerships syndicate. Bleep Test had finished a promising second to Karl Burke's well-regarded Ali Shuffle on her debut at Redcar on April 7, and Easterby said: 'She's smart and tough. First time out she was very green and backward in her coat, but she's been working really well at home. She has lots of toe and I thought it was a good performance." Evergreen jockey Joe Fanning produced a trademark ride, dictating from the front, to land the Maiden Handicap on Cracksman filly Rommie The Miracle, trained at Middleham by Charlie Johnston. Johnston was narrowly denied a quick double when Mafting, trained by David O'Meara, kept pulling out more under Danny Tudhope to beat Burj Zabeel by a neck in the Watch Racing On Racing TV Restricted Maiden Stakes. O'Meara said: "He was still green in front and had a little wobble a furlong out. He's done nothing wrong up to now and might handle a bit more ease in the ground." The gelding had been runner-up in a Beverley novice and Hamilton maiden leading up to Redcar. Mafting, a son of Too Darned Hot, is owned by Gallop Racing, and syndicate representative Richard Walker explained that 'Mafting' is Yorkshire dialect for hot conditions. Mr Walker added: "He should have won at Hamilton – it was just one of those things and he got done on the line. He was a worthy favourite today and we thought we'd try it from the front. He toughed it out, but frontrunning probably didn't suit him." There was a front-running hat-trick when Jet Black, trained in Hampshire by Andrew Balding, ground it out to win the Watch Racing TV In Stunning HD Fillies' Handicap under PJ McDonald. "She's learning on the job and has actually won quite comfortably in the end. She would benefit from an extra couple of furlongs," said the winning rider after the Kodiac filly outstayed Luke Morris on Spirit of the Bay. Electric Avenue rocked down to the winning post to land the Join Racing TV Now Handicap under a fine ride from Tom Eaves. Ivan Furtado, who trains the winner for the Making Headway Racing syndicate, said: "Tom gave her a great ride from a tricky draw and there's more to come from her." It looked for a long way like the 10-year-old Poet's Dawn was in for an 11th career win to seal a double for Tim Easterby, but the veteran gelding couldn't hold off the winner's electric surge in the final furlong. It's been a good two days at Redcar for Malton yards and Ollie Pears kept the run going with Eighteen Fourteen, ridden by Cam Hardie, taking the Racing TV Profits Returned To Racing Handicap by a head from Due Respect. Martin Pearson, of the Crystal Clear Racing syndicate, said: "He's a talented horse but doesn't always show it!' The day ended with dairy farmer Rosie Howarth milking the applause after landing the Watch Race Replays On Racing TV Amateur Jockeys' Handicap on Monsieur Fantaisie for North Yorkshire trainer Roger Fell. The 5lbs claimer didn't have a clear run but swooped late to deny Olly Pears a double with Let's Go Hugo. Rosie, who was out milking cows on the family farm near Pickering on the morning of the race, said: "It didn't exactly go according to plan, but we got there!" The winning trainer added: "The more trouble this horse gets into the better chance you've got, and Rosie gave him a great ride. I was impressed."
