‘Finish Yelahanka flyover work by December-end': BBMP Chief
BENGALURU: BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to complete the flyover work on Doddaballapur Main Road in Yelahanka by December. Speaking during inspection near Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road in the Yelahanka zone, he said that the 2-km flyover work is 60 per cent complete and officials have been told to complete the remaining work by December-end. Rao also inspected footpath of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road and noticed that the footpath had collapsed in some places. He instructed the officials to immediately carry out repairs including installing kerb stones. Iron rods installed by BESCOM to the transformer on the footpath are too low, which will cause difficulty for the public to walk on the footpath, he said, instructing BESCOM officials concerned to immediately fix it. On the 16th B-Cross Road in Yelahanka's surroundings, he noticed that some shop owners had thrown waste on the footpath and told the marshals to fine the shop owners. He also instructed them to instruct them not to throw waste on the roadside or in empty spaces. He directed officials to immediately install slabs, which were not installed for the 15-metre footpath at Chikkabommasandra Cross. Noticing a building being constructed on the 1st Main Road in A-Sector of Yelahanka in violation of the plan, Rao instructed the officials to immediately issue a notice under the Municipal Corporation Act 2020 and remove parts of the building constructed in violation of the plan. He also instructed the officials to take action against the buildings constructed in violation of the plan within the Yelahanka zone. It is essential to carry out annual maintenance of the newly constructed watch tower, cycle track, car tower, Kannada Akshara Mala and other decorative lights in Yelahanka, he said and instructed the officials to submit a proposal for the grant required for their annual maintenance.

Sluice gates to be installed in 38 lakes to curb flooding in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: To regulate water outflow from lakes and prevent inundation of low-lying areas during monsoon, BBMP proposed installation of sluice gates in 38 lakes across the city. Plans have been made to install sluice gates in 6 lakes in Yelahanka zone, 7 in Bommanahalli, 5 in Dasarahalli, 3 in Bengaluru South, and 1 in west zone. A detailed proposal has been prepared and is awaiting BBMP chief commissioner Maheshwar Rao's approval. The project will also include construction of sluice gates and waste-blocking walls in the lakes. "The estimated cost of building waste-blocking walls alone is around Rs 70 lakh, while the overall project cost could go up to Rs 114 crore," said a senior BBMP lake official. Sluice gates are also being installed at Yelachenahalli and Subramanyapura lakes, along with others in south zone. These are expected to prevent excess rainwater from reaching low-lying areas such as Bhairasandra and Krishnanagara. What is a sluice gate? It is a kind of barrier that helps regulate water level by controlling flow. These gates can be manually operated or powered by electric or hydraulic systems. They are commonly used in sewage-treatment plants, stormwater systems and other water-management facilities to manage liquid flow and prevent overflow.

Property owners upset over new BBMP E-Khata move
Bengaluru: The BBMP has issued an order that e-Khata will be mandatory for building construction in Bengaluru from now on. BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has issued an order that e-Khata will be mandatory for obtaining building plans from July 1. The Corporation, which had already given a shock by disconnecting electricity connections to unauthorised buildings as per the Supreme Court order, has now given another shock by making e-Khata mandatory for new building construction. Online application submission and distribution arrangements have been made for building plan approval within the BBMP area. In addition, e-Khata is being issued for properties online. Now, both the software are being integrated. Therefore, those applying for building plan approval must first obtain an e-Khata. It has been made mandatory for those applying for plan approval to enter the e-Khata or EPID number in the software and submit the e-Khata. Meanwhile, only 5 lakh e-Khatas have been distributed so far, and lakhs of owners still need to obtain e-Khata. Meanwhile, property owners are expressing anger over this order of BBMP. 5 lakh e-Khatas have been distributed so far in the BBMP area. Now more than 25 lakh draft e-Khatas are available online. About 3,000 people are doing this process every day. However, the order making e-Khata mandatory from July 1 has caused hardship to property owners. Rs 40-crore proposal mooted to desilt Bengaluru's Madiwala Lake
BENGALURU: To tackle flooding in the BTM Layout area during monsoon, the BBMP lake wing has plans to remove silt from the Madiwala Lake. Officials from the lake wing said that a Rs 40-crore proposal to remove silt has been sent to BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao for approval. 'If silt is removed from the 250-acre lake, its water holding capacity will increase. This will help avoid floods in future,' an official said. The lake has not been desilted for the last 20 years. Once desilting work is done, areas downstream of the lake will not get flooded even if it rains heavily. A sluice gate will be installed 250 metres away from the lake to control the flow of water, he said. The Palike is now developing pathways and parks, adding gazebos at a cost of Rs 15 crore. Removal of silt and hyacinth will add to Madiwala Lake's beauty and improve its ecosystem. 'We will start work as soon as the Rs 40-crore proposal is cleared,' an engineer said. Expressing concern over silt and sewage entering the lake whenever it rains heavily, Anthony Raj, a fisherman, said about 116 families are dependent on the water body. Whenever it rains, sewage enters the lake, killing aquatic life. 'We cleared five coracle loads of dead fish from the lake after the heavy rain on May 19. This was because sewage entered the water inlet,' Raj said. Palike officials, however, allege that the pipelines of BWSSB leak and manholes overflow at many places. Thus, sewage enters the open drains and flows into the lake.

E-khata mandatory for building plan approval from July 1 in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Beginning July 1, BBMP will mandate submission of an e-khata for all online building plan approvals, BBMP chief commissioner Tushar Giri Nath has announced. This requirement, part of civic body's digital integration efforts, is aimed at streamlining and speeding up approval process. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Currently, BBMP's town planning department processes building plan approvals through EoDB-OBPS (Ease of Doing Business–Online Building Plan Approval System) platform, while property ownership records and tax details are managed separately via revenue department's e-aasthi system, which issues e-khatas. To enhance efficiency, BBMP is integrating these two digital systems. Once integrated, applicants seeking building plan approval will need to enter their property's e-khata or EPID number into EoDB-OBPS software. This will allow the system to automatically verify property ownership and tax records without the need for manual submission or forwarding of documents to the revenue department. "This integration will eliminate the redundant step of verifying property documents separately, simplify the process, and enable faster approvals," said Maheshwar Rao, BBMP chief commissioner and additional chief secretary, urban development department. The new rule will apply to all types of building plan approvals, including Nambike Naksha submissions. Additionally, under BBMP's new 'trust & verify' policy, assistant directors (town planning) will be required to either approve or reject applications with valid reasons within a set time frame. If they fail to do so, the system will automatically grant 'deemed approval'. In such instances, the respective zonal joint directors (town planning) must report the lapse to zonal commissioner for disciplinary action against the concerned officer.
