Chadian president holds emergency meeting after deadly incidents

N'Djamena, June 20 (UNI) Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno held an emergency meeting on security and safety after some 50 people had been killed in deadly incidents since May, the presidency said in a statement Thursday. Mahamat noted that the recent security incidents in Logone Occidental province, Ouaddai province and Salamat province are nothing more than a proven security and administrative failure. The president criticised government officials for their incompetence, saying the situation was unacceptable. "It's either you change the situation by properly ensuring the security of Chadians and their property throughout the country, or I will assume my responsibilities by appointing in your place men and women capable of reversing the trend," Mahamat was quoted by the statement as saying. "The departments of security, territorial administration, and justice must do their job... with complete independence and impartiality," he added. "The disorder must stop." Intercommunal clashes are common in Chad and are usually caused by disputes over land or political differences. UNI XINHUA ARN

Disabled officer, postpartum mother fulfil civic duty in Ayer Kuning

TAPAH: Being wheelchair-bound has not deterred Corporal Mahamat Udin from fulfilling his civic duty in the Ayer Kuning state seat by-election today. The 60-year-old, who has been dealing with health issues following an accident several years ago, arrived alone at the polling centre at Dewan Rekreasi APR Transit, 3rd Battalion of the General Operations Force (GOF) in Bidor. "I am not able to walk and have been using a wheelchair since the accident six years ago in Bidor. I'm excited because this is my first time voting in person. "Previously, I voted by post. I came today knowing it is my responsibility to vote," said Mahamat, who has served in the force since 1985. Meanwhile, Surya Mat, 42, a mother still in her confinement period, also came out to vote, driven by her sense of duty as a Malaysian. "It's been 32 days since I delivered my fourth child. I'm happy to be able to vote today, and it's part of our responsibility as citizens. "I woke up early to fulfil this duty. My husband brought me here. This is my third time voting in Ayer Kuning," said the mother of four. Two polling centres to facilitate early voting for the Ayer Kuning state by-election were opened simultaneously at 8am today. The two centres are the General Operations Force (GOF) 3rd Battalion Camp's Dewan Rekreasi Pegawai Kanan, in Bidor and Dewan Anggerik at the Tapah district police headquarters (IPD) Housing Complex. The early voting process for this by-election involves 500 police personnel and their spouses. Voters in Ayer Kuning will head to the polls on April 26, with a total of 31,897 registered voters eligible to cast their ballots in the by-election. The by-election was triggered by the death of Umno's Ishsam Shahruddin, who died of a heart attack on Feb 22. The Ayer Kuning state by-election will see a three-cornered fight between the candidates from Barisan Nasional (BN), Perikatan Nasional (PN), and Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM). BN candidate Dr Mohamad Yusri Bakir, 54, will be challenged by PN's Abdul Muhaimin Malek, 43, and PSM's K.S. Bawani, 39, in the by-election.
