Former Macomb County sheriff's deputy sentenced for slapping 14-year-old
A former Macomb County sheriff's deputy accused of slapping a 14-year-old during a transport has been sentenced to jail time and probation. In April, Derek Reed pleaded no contest to willful failure to uphold the law and assault and battery. As part of Reed's plea agreement, prosecutors dropped fourth-degree child abuse charges. Macomb County prosecutors say on Aug. 29, 2023, Reed allegedly slapped the teen he was transporting to the Macomb County Juvenile Justice Center. The sheriff's office fired Reed following the incident. Reed was sentenced Monday to 45 days in jail and 18 months of probation. He was ordered to report to jail on June 20. "No one is above the law, especially those sworn to uphold it. This defendant abused his position of authority and violated the trust placed in him by the public. Today's sentence holds him accountable and affirms our commitment to protecting every individual's rights," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a statement.

Former Warren police officer sentenced in 2023 assault at traffic stop
A former police officer who is facing charges in connection with a 2020 incident in Highland Park, Michigan, received 45 days in jail and two years' probation for a 2023 assault during a traffic stop in Warren. According to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, Dammeon Player was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and willful failure to uphold the law. Prosecutors dropped the willful failure charge and upgraded it to misconduct in office. Authorities say on July 20, 2023, Player and another officer conducted a traffic stop that was outside of their jurisdiction and allegedly used excessive force during the arrest. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office investigated the incident back in July 2023 and released a bodycam and dashcam video of the assault in 2024. "When a police officer uses their authority to commit violence instead of prevent it, the damage goes far beyond the immediate victim. This sentence sends a clear message: no one is above the law, and those who abuse their power will be held accountable," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a statement. Player is ordered to report to jail on June 20. The former officer is also facing charges in connection with an incident in 2020 when he worked as an officer in Highland Park, Michigan. In that case, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Player with misconduct in office, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felonious assault. Prosecutors allege that on May 14, 2020, Player responded to a Burger King on Woodward Avenue on reports of someone being disorderly and got into a verbal argument with a man. While in his vehicle, Player pulled out his Taser, but it did not affect the man. He then got out of his car and followed the man down the street before using his Taser again and allegedly pushing him to the ground. Prosecutors said the man hit his head on the cement and was taken to a hospital for treatment. His next court date in the 2020 case is scheduled in June.

Man accused of beating mother to death with broomstick handle found incompetent to stand trial
A Michigan man has been found incompetent to stand trial for now in the beating death of his mother involving a broomstick handle, the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office reported. A review hearing will take place in 90 days to as he "is likely to regain competency with treatment," the press release said. The case involves homicide-murder second degree and assault with intent to murder charges that are pending against Armando Jourdain Streeter, 46, of St. Clair Shores. Both charges carry a life sentence. He and his 76-year-old mother lived in the same home; and authorities have accused him of physically beating her to death with a broken broomstick handle on April 5. "Our office will continue to monitor Mr. Streeter's status closely and will resume prosecution when he is found competent to proceed. This decision does not affect the charges brought or the seriousness of the alleged offenses," Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said in his statement. The competency hearing took place Tuesday in St. Clair Shores 40th District Court before Judge Mark Fratarcangeli. Streeter is being held without bond while these proceedings take place.

Warren man charged with second-degree murder after victim found with large cut across neck
A Warren man is facing second-degree murder charges and is accused of killing another man who was found with a large cut across his neck. Police and EMS personnel responded to a Warren home late on May 31 and found Travis James Holdburg, 22, standing in the driveway. When first responders entered the home, they found a dead man with multiple injuries and a large cut across his neck, Macomb County prosecutors say. Holdburg was arraigned Tuesday on one count of second-degree murder and given a $1 million bond. If released, Holdburg must wear a GPS tether, cannot have contact with any witnesses and cannot have contact within a quarter mile of where the incident happened. "This was a brutal and senseless act of violence. The sheer disregard for human life is both heartbreaking and unacceptable. Our office will pursue justice with the full weight of the law to ensure the individual responsible is held fully accountable. We must continue to stand united against this kind of violence and affirm that it has no place in our neighborhoods," said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido in a news release. Holdburg returns to court for a probable cause conference on June 10. He has a preliminary examination on June 17.
