NFL Draft Summer Scouting Report: Justin Joly, TE, NC State
Summer is here, and it is everyone's favorite time of the year, scouting time. Every year, we do Summer Scouting to preview college football for Vikings fans, but also give them an idea of names to follow and watch in the fall as needs pop up for Minnesota. Are we going to write about quarterbacks? You know it, but why? Because other NFL teams will draft them, just as they will draft every other position. It all matters whether these players end up on the Vikings, the Bears, or the Steelers. We write these so Vikings fans can be the most informed fans. Player Background - 2-Star Recruit - Transfer from UConn - 2024 Preseason Mackey Award Watchlist Career Stats Heading into the 2025 Season - 117 Receptions - 1,489 Receiving Yards - 12.7 Yards Per Reception - 8 Touchdowns Notable PFF Numbers Heading into the 2025 Season - 73.5 PFF Receiving Grade - 62.4 PFF Blocking Grade - 6.2 Yards per Reception After Contact - 1.79 Yards Per Route Run - Average Depth of Target 8.6 Yards - 26 Contested Catches Player Traits - Good release off the line - Tracks the ball well in the air - Makes contested catches - Good burst and ball carrier vision - Footwork and hips allow separation Player Summary Justin Joly does not have the typical appearance of a tight end when you see him on film or on screen. He lines up both in-line and out, and NC State gets the most out of him that way. He demonstrates good movement abilities with and without the ball in his hands due to his footwork and hip speed. On top of that, the way he attacks the ball in the air and makes contested catches will make him a fun watch this fall and beyond. He may not be a top-end tight end prospect when the draft rolls around, but do not doubt his playmaking ability for a second.
