Coimbatore corporation yet to get licence for new bus stand at Ukkadam

Coimbatore: While the city corporation has successfully invited tenders for the construction of a new bus stand at Ukkadam, it is yet to obtain the primary approval and licence for the facility from the regional transport authority. According to an official source, the tenders were floated a week ago and bidding is likely to be held on July 9. The state has sanctioned 23 crore for the project, the work order of which is expected to be issued within 10 days from the date of finalizing the bidder. The Ukkadam bus stand was demolished in 2018 to facilitate flyover work. Spread across 6.5 acres, the new bus stand would have two terminals – one for town buses with 30 bus bays and another for mofussil buses with 28 bus bays. The bus stand would have provisions for restaurants, shops and other facilities. A parking lot, which could accommodate 32 four-wheelers and 100 two-wheelers, is also part of the project. Commenting on the project, city corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran said, "Fund has been sanctioned for the project. We will initiate the process to obtain the approval and licence for the bus stand only after finalizing the bidder, who might want to make some changes to the plan design and amenities, which the regional transport authority would scrutinize to grant the approval and licence. It would be more like renewal of the licence obtained for the old bus stand. " Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Siruvani dam seepage rectification awaits approval from Central Water and Power Research Station

Coimbatore corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran inspect Siruvani dam along with Kerala irrigation department officials COIMBATORE: A pressure grouting method suggested to arrest the seepage on the Siruvani dam is awaiting approval of the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Coimbatore corporation officials have said. Siruvani dam, situated in Kerala , is a major source of drinking water for Coimbatore city. Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran inspected the dam along with Kerala irrigation department officials on Thursday. A senior corporation official stated that regular maintenance work, including painting, lubricating the gates and other structural supervision, were being carried out at the dam. "It was a routine joint inspection to check the ongoing work and the water level at the dam. Besides, there were discussions on the progress of curbing the dam seepage. Earlier, the installation of a geomembrane material was suggested. Now it is suggested to go for a pressure grouting method to arrest the seepage. However, final approval from consultant CWPRS is required, and the corporation will be writing, requesting a joint inspection for the approval to proceed with grouting. " The dam's permissible seepage level exceeded over time as the diameter of the holes increased, leading to excess water loss. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? "The dam's water level is almost full due to recent rain, and we are unsure if the technique can be implemented, for which we are requesting final approval from the CWPRS," he said. According to official sources, the Siruvani dam's water level as on Friday was recorded at 38.74 feet against its full capacity of 49.53 feet. As per the dam safety officer's (DSO) instructions, water level is restricted to 44.61 feet. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Siruvani Dam leakage yet to be plugged even as monsoon nears

COIMBATORE: With the southwest monsoon just days away, concerns are mounting over the delay in initiating critical repair works at the Siruvani Dam - one of the primary sources of drinking water for Coimbatore city. The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) has been waiting for the Kerala Water Resources and Irrigation Department to finalise cost estimates for essential repairs, based on a recent report by dam safety experts. To address increasing seepage from the dam, a joint inspection was conducted on January 8 by five teams comprising officials from the Pune-based Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS), Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M), CCMC, and the Kerala State Government's Water Resources Department. The teams carried out a detailed assessment of the dam's condition and highlighted urgent structural interventions. The CWPRS team has since submitted a comprehensive report to CCMC Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran, outlining the extent of the damage and suggesting remedial measures to arrest the leakage and improve overall dam safety. The Pune team has suggested two methods - grouting and geo membrane for fixing the issues in the dam. Due to water seepage, around 10 MLD of water is being wasted every single day. This quantity can be used to supply water for three days to residential areas in the city. And once the issues are addressed, around 50 to 55 MLD of water can be saved during the peak summer season which would be of great use for the people.

Post rain, KNG Pudur-Subramaniyampalayam stretch a nightmare for commuters

COIMBATORE: With unseasonal summer showers lashing the city, a key stretch of road connecting KNG Pudur and Subramaniyampalayam has become non-motorable, leaving residents and commuters frustrated. The 3.7-km stretch, a crucial state highway linking the Thadagam-Anaikatti state highway road with the Nagapattinam-Gundlupet national highway (Mettupalayam Road), has turned into a muddy mess due to incomplete underground drainage (UGD) works. The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board, executing the UGD works on behalf of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC), has reportedly failed to properly restore the road surface after laying pipelines. The resulting sludge-filled stretch has not only brought traffic to a crawl but has also increased the risk of accidents. Residents say several minor mishaps have already been reported over the past week. "This road is a lifeline connecting two major highways. Now it feels like we're driving through a marshland," said E Saravana Kumar, a regular commuter. "The rains have only worsened the situation." Local residents and motorists sought immediate intervention from the authorities and are calling for better coordination between government agencies to avoid such chaos in the future. "Why can't the TWAD Board and the highways department work together? Every time one agency finishes the work, another starts digging again," said a resident. Meanwhile, a senior CCMC official told TNIE that although road-laying works have been sanctioned for several areas in the city, the corporation cannot proceed until TWAD completes its work and issues a no-objection certificate (NOC). Until then, the stretch remains a symbol of poor planning and inter-agency disconnect — at the cost of public safety and convenience. A senior TWAD Board official said all necessary steps would be taken to resolve the issue at the earliest. CCMC Commissioner M Sivaguru Prabakaran told TNIE, "A meeting has been scheduled with the TWAD Board officials to discuss water supply and UGD works across the city. In some of the added areas, pipelines installed under the AMRUT Scheme were left unattended for a long time and are being checked now. Regarding the road issues, I shall speak with the TWAD Board officials and address the problem soon."
