MRPL shares fall over 2.5% as crude spikes after Israel's airstrike on Iran
By Aditya Bhagchandani Published on June 13, 2025, 09:48 IST Shares of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) dropped 2.64% to ₹139.01 in Friday's morning trade, down from the previous close of ₹142.78. The fall comes amid heightened geopolitical risk following Israel's preemptive strike on Iranian military and nuclear targets, which triggered a global rally in crude oil prices. The spike in oil prices—Brent crossing $77 per barrel and WTI nearing $76—has increased the cost pressure on Indian refiners like MRPL. As an oil refining and marketing company, MRPL's margins are sensitive to fluctuations in global crude benchmarks and forex volatility. With the Strait of Hormuz—a key chokepoint for nearly 20% of global oil supply—under potential threat, traders are factoring in further risk premium in crude contracts, leading to weakness in downstream energy stocks across emerging markets, including India. Coast ready to green western Ghats region
Mangaluru: Following the alarming degeneration of green cover over the coast due to various infrastructure projects including the Nethravati diversion project (touted as Yettinahole), the development of three national highways, power lines and petroleum and chemical pipelines the forest department has begun bringing green cover back to its pristine self in urban, rural, and western ghats area all along the coast. Over 1.5 crore saplings have been readied at 16 major nurseries in three coastal districts of the forest department. Out of this at least 5 per cent have been reserved for tree planting projects taken up as the corporate social responsibility of various corporate bodies like MRPL, OMPL, SEZ, UPCL, Ports at Mangaluru, Udupi and Karwar, vital installations like Navy and Nuclear Power Corporation Limited at Kaiga in Uttara Kannada. In addition, 7-8 per cent will be planted under the Koti Vriksha project of the government which the schools and educational institutions execute and the rest will be planted by the forest department in various reserve forests, western ghats pockets, wildlife divisions, national parks that borders Uttara Kannada, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu. 'We know due to many infrastructure projects we have lost so much green cover, but we have readied the nurseries in the forest department to plant four trees for every tree lost during the project execution in the western ghats and the coastal region. It is not only compensatory forest development but also extensive forest development coupled with a concentration in the areas where the trees were cut' forest officials told Hans India. The forest department officials in three districts say that all the local and western Ghats endemic species have been developed. Range Forest Officers of 16 ranges across the coastal districts told Hans India that all the greening of the Western Ghats is happening on the seaside face of the Western Ghats the department has over 70 small, medium and big nurseries of Mangaluru range Forest minister of Karnataka Eshwar Khandre told Hans India that 'many flowering, shade-giving, berry yielding and tree species have been selected, which are in fact included in the plant and tree diversity of the Western Ghats. 28 species of saplings including Kakke, Holay Dasavala, Rosi Owlanda, Nerale (blueberries) Ranje, Ashoka, Jack, wild jack, wild Mangoes, Mahagoni, Pepul, wild fig have been selected for planting in the forests, The world environment day is a special day for the entire world, we in Karnataka government are taking it to the next level, knowing well that we have one of 18 biodiversity spots in the world in the western ghats' the minister told. Officials at the New Delhi-based Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority (PPVFRA) told Hans India that the time has come to consciously protect plant diversity and not get lost in the melee of commercial propagation of plants in unlikely regions. Ever since agriculture came to be practised for the survival of Human beings 20,000 years back, plant diversity has been the object of study. Modern scientific findings have established that there are 49,000 species, out of which 3900 species have been used for human consumption and 3000 for Medicinal purposes. But in pursuit of developing cities and concrete jungles, we have destroyed many species, but now the time has come for us to protect the ones we are left with, fortunately, India is one among the 17 countries that share top plant diversity and our farmers have protected it to the maximum extent possible the plant scientists at the Authority told. The most happening areas in this unique green drive were Reserve Forests like Kanakamajalu, Kannadka and Periyabaney where the department has identified several types of bamboo and canes in over 75 hectares. All bamboo varieties are good for soil conservation, rain, several species of wildlife habitat and also for commercial value. The Kanakamajalu range forest nursery has readied 2,75,000 saplings of western ghats endemic varieties out of which 40,000 will be reserved for public distribution.

Mangalore Refinery secures US patent for Iso-Butyl Benzene production technology
By Aman Shukla Published on May 30, 2025, 16:57 IST Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited (MRPL) has been awarded a United States patent for its method of preparing iso-Butyl Benzene (i-BB), a key intermediate used in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The patented process, developed in-house, had previously received recognition through an Indian patent. The patented method centers on a side-chain alkylation process that converts a low-value captive stream into iso-Butyl Benzene using a specially engineered catalyst. This catalyst, developed at MRPL's Innovation Centre, is designed to achieve high conversion efficiency and selectivity toward the i-BB product. Iso-Butyl Benzene is an essential raw material in the synthesis of Brufen (ibuprofen), a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). By developing this production process domestically, MRPL aims to reduce dependence on imported intermediates and enhance self-reliance in pharmaceutical ingredient supply. As part of its scale-up efforts, MRPL is currently establishing a pilot plant for i-BB production. This facility will support the transition from laboratory development to commercial-scale manufacturing. The patent and ongoing pilot-scale activities reflect MRPL's focus on advancing technologies relevant to the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, supporting India's broader goals in local manufacturing and process innovation. India's Russian oil imports hit 10-month high on strong demand for ESPO crude
India's Russian crude oil imports will hit close to 1.8 million barrels per day in May, the highest in 10 months, ship tracking data from Kpler showed, after refiners snapped up more light grades such as ESPO Blend. The robust demand for the lighter Russian grades in the world's third biggest oil importer and consumer is expected to last into July as Indian refiners ordered more than 10 cargoes of June-loading ESPO crude last week, traders said. India's strong demand has led to a rebound in spot premiums for ESPO cargoes delivered to China, the biggest buyer of the crude exported from the Far East port of Kozmino. Crude distillation unit shutdowns at India's major refineries Reliance Industries and MRPL have increased import requirements for feedstock at fluid catalytic crackers on favorable margins, said Jay Shah, a senior oil analyst at consultancy Rystad Energy . He added that some of these cargoes were delivered under a long-term deal between Reliance Industries and Rosneft, noting that cargoes arriving at the western Sikka port for the Indian refiner have increased since the beginning of the year. A source at an Indian refiner, who recently bought some volumes of the light sweet crude, said: "ESPO oil is available in good quantities in the market. Traders are charging a premium of about 50 cents to Dubai prices." Another source said ESPO delivered to India is currently trading at a premium of between 50 cents and $1 per barrel to Dubai prices. More ESPO was offered to India as Chinese state-owned companies continue shunning sanctioned crudes and crude quotas are running tight for Chinese independent refiners, analysts said. India's demand has pushed up ESPO prices for China, traders said. Offers for July-loading cargoes stood at around $2 per barrel premiums for delivery to Chinese ports, up from the $1.50-$1.70 a barrel traded for June-loading cargoes, traders said.
