Meta Gains New Ad Safety Certifications for Facebook and Instagram

This story was originally published on Social Media Today. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily Social Media Today newsletter. More reassurance for Meta advertisers, with Meta today announcing that it's been re-accredited by the Media Ratings Council (MRC) for Content-Level Brand Safety, meaning that Meta's documented processes continue to meet the MRC standards for brand safety and measurement. The MRC conducts audits of ad systems to ensure measurement processes meet quality and assurance benchmarks, providing third-party checking to give ad partners more confidence in such. As per the MRC: 'Accreditation indicates that the Measurement Statistics reported for the Service comply with: (1) the Minimum Standards for Media Rating Research, the Enhanced Content Level Context and Brand Safety Guidelines and the Business Partner Qualification requirements of the Invalid Traffic Detection and Filtration Standards Addendum (version 2.0) published by the MRC; the Ad Verification Guidelines published by the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB); (2) the procedures described in Meta's answers to the MRC questionnaire; and (3) the procedures described in procedure manuals and textual materials included in reports of the Service. So it's based on Meta's documentation, not its actual process, which is a relevant note, while there are also a lot of exclusions noted in the official document. But even so, it provides some level of additional checking, ensuring that Meta's meeting industry standards, as defined by the MRC. Though there was one particularly interesting note in this latest review: 'Misinformation is excluded from accreditation and remains in process of review as Community Notes applied to this category are being assessed.' So the MRC isn't willing to provide assurance on the prevalence of misinformation on Facebook, Instagram and Threads at this stage, due to Meta's change in approach in enforcing such, as it moves to allow more speech in its apps. Depending on your perspective, that could be a valid note. In addition to MRC re-accreditation, Facebook and Instagram have also recently received brand safety re-certification from the Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG) for the sixth consecutive year, while Integral Ad Science has also launched a new contextual category reporting for Meta Platforms, which further expands its measurement reporting across Facebook and Instagram. As per IAS: 'Total Media Quality (TMQ) for Meta, contextual category reporting provides advertisers with the most accurate and actionable brand safety and suitability measurement. TMQ is powered by IAS's multimedia technology, providing unmatched insight into video content through frame-by-frame analysis of video images, audio, and text to provide the most accurate measurement at scale.' So, more assurance for Meta advertisers, with the proviso that misinformation cannot currently be measured due to the shift to Community Notes. NOTE: MRC's Facebook and Instagram Feed accreditation applies to English and Spanish Only. Recommended Reading Meta Advertisers Report System Glitches Are Pushing up Ad Prices

CNN, MSNBC insist anti-ICE protests have been ‘mostly peaceful' despite unrest

CNN and MSNBC have bent over backwards to remind viewers that anti-ICE demonstrations and riots causing turmoil and unrest across the country were 'mostly peaceful,' according to a new study from the Media Research Center. Los Angeles, the epicenter of the anti-ICE chaos, has been hit with continued disorder and flash mob-style looting incidents as law enforcement has been forced to make mass arrests. Videos and photos of the disorder have taken the internet by storm and some businesses have even boarded up their shops. Anti-ICE protesters have also clashed with police in New York City, where several police vehicles were set on fire inside an NYPD parking lot overnight Wednesday. In Chicago, a car drove through a crowd of demonstrators Tuesday night as hundreds of anti-ICE protesters gathered, and multiple police vehicles have been vandalized in that city, too. 10 Protesters burning cars and waving Mexican flags during an immigration protest in Los Angeles. REUTERS While major cities such as L.A., New York and Chicago have received the most attention, there have also been anti-ICE demonstrations in Washington, North Carolina, Missouri, Texas, Indiana, Colorado, Georgia, and a variety of other areas. Through it all, CNN and MSNBC have continued to insist the demonstrations and riots were 'mostly peaceful.' The Media Research Center (MRC) analyzed all coverage from June 7-11 and found a staggering 211 examples of CNN and MSNBC personalities insisting the chaos was 'largely peaceful,' 'mostly peaceful' or something similar. 10 CNN and MSNBC have completely dismissed the dangerous reality of these nationwide protests. MRC CNN was responsible for 123 claims that the riots were 'peaceful,' while MSNBC reminded viewers 88 times, according to the MRC. NewsBusters senior research analyst Bill D'Agostino, who conducted the MRC study, noticed that whenever there was violence, CNN and MSNBC attributed it to a nebulous, separate group that had no connection with the 'peaceful protesters.' 10 Police officer firing a weapon at protesters during a demonstration in Los Angeles. ‘Self-interest is king': V'Landys weighs in on Flemington-Caulfield ‘powerhouse' as members have their say

Wilson would act as temporary chairman before handing over to Kanga after 12 months, according to sources familiar with the discussion but not willing to speak publicly about a private gathering. Such a decision would have to be put to a members' vote. The VRC has close to 35,000 members, while the MRC has 15,500. VRC members asked by this masthead about the merger talks on a social media forum on Thursday were divided in their views. 'Once the clubs are settled with their executives and fiscal performance, this definitely should be assessed as it 'could' bring about significant efficiencies, more cohesive business, sponsorship and operating strategies plus benefits to all members,' John Anderson wrote on the VRC Members Melbourne Facebook page. Mike Birnbaum said he would back a super club if it had three membership options: one for Caulfield, one for Flemington, and a combined ticket for Caulfield and Flemington. The MRC is offering an early bird membership for the coming season of $340, while VRC membership for this past financial year was $590. Jo Anne, who did not give her surname, was opposed to a merger. 'I'm a Caulfield local and member of both clubs, own horses, etc ... culturally they are very different clubs and I'd hate the VRC culture to come across to the MRC so I'd vote against it,' she wrote. Another member of both clubs, Glenn, who did not want to use his surname, told this masthead that he would support a race club 'marriage' if it was less than the cost of two memberships. 'My only concern would be that carnival days could become overcrowded,' he said. But the VRC released a statement on Thursday saying it was not 'pursuing or engaging in club merger activity and has no reason, financial or otherwise to do so at this time'. 'The VRC remains committed to working alongside Racing Victoria and the broader industry for the betterment of Victorian racing,' the club said. 'The VRC is focused squarely on strengthening the VRC – growing the club, backing its members and partners, and building on the success of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, with many exciting club wide announcements in the pipeline.' The VRC has lost $70 million across the past four years but is predicting a return to profitability next year. Loading Racing Victoria CEO Aaron Morrison said there was no proposal for a Flemington-Caulfield merger on the table. 'The focus of the clubs and Racing Victoria is on driving greater efficiencies in the face of a challenging consumer and wagering environment,' Morrison said. 'There are a number of ways that efficiencies can be achieved and Racing Victoria is actively involved in exploring those with clubs, including opportunities for shared services models.' Kanga released a statement on Thursday night, saying 'discussions around club mergers have occurred for many years and are nothing new'. 'I assure you that before anything was to even be considered, the MRC would need to be clear that any proposal was looked at in detail and in the best interests of members and the industry,' he said. But Kanga's focus has been drawn inward this week after the MRC board's decision on Monday night to remove chief executive Tom Reilly from office, and appoint Tanya Fullarton as chief operating officer. The MRC board appointed Kanga as honorary executive chair this week. Mergers are not new in Australian racing.
