Rothdene pump station upgrades to be completed soon

Rothdene pump station upgrades to be completed soon The Midvaal Local Municipality(MLM) is making significant progress on the upgrade of the Rothdene Pump Station, a key infrastructure project aimed at improving sewage management and eliminating unpleasant odours affecting nearby communities. Recently, Municipal officials conducted an oversight visit to the site to monitor construction progress and ensure quality standards are being met. According to MLM, the pump station plays a critical role in processing sewage from several areas, including Sicelo, Henley on Klip, Daleside, and parts of the Midvaal industrial zones. For years, residents living near the station have expressed concern over persistent foul odours emanating from the facility. In response, the municipality has appointed a contractor to install a state-of-the-art Odour Control System designed to neutralize offensive smells and significantly improve air quality for surrounding neighbourhoods. 'The upgrade project remains on schedule, with full completion anticipated by the end of June. Several key components of the upgrades, such as servicing the 5-ton Demag cranes, repairing and installing Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), and refurbishing the unit breaker, were completed earlier this year.' MLM expands CCTV, upgrades infrastructure in new budget rollout

Midvaal Local Municipality (MLM) is among the few municipalities in Gauteng to adopt a fully funded budget. This is after the unanimous decision to approve the 2025/2026 Medium Term Revenue and Expenditure Framework (MTREF) and Integrated Development Plan. This means that MLM has enough capital to cover all planned expenditures, including operational and capital costs. According to MLM, the Draft Integrated Development Plan and MTREF came after months of consultations with various communities and stakeholders across the municipality. The Gauteng budget 2.0 for the 2025/26 financial year is R172.3b, an increase of some R886.6m from the budget tabled earlier this year. As Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development, Lebogang Maile, tabled the Gauteng budget 2.0 for the 2025/26 financial year recently, he raised a serious concern that only four municipalities in Gauteng have tabled funded budgets while the rest remain unfunded. According to the municipality, the R2b 2025/2026 MTREF was drafted with careful consideration of the challenging economic climate facing the people of Midvaal, as well as the wider challenges faced by South Africa. This, MLM believes, showcases a government that prioritises the well-being and interests of its residents. The revenue budgeted for the year is R2.126b, an increase of 9.79% over the current year's budgeted revenue. Key service delivery projects included in this budget is R69m to replace old asbestos pipes using the Water Services Infrastructure Grant (WSIG). Phase 3 of the electrification of Sicelo in Ext 5 (Silahliwe) continues. In previous budgets, MLM allocated funding for Phases 1 and 2 in Kuvukiland and Stand 118. A total of R26m will be geared towards the construction of a substation in Savanna City, which will increase electricity capacity to support future housing developments. 'A total of R27m has been set aside in the 2024/25 budget from loan finance for road rehabilitation and the conversion of gravel roads to tar. A further R22m is allocated in the 2025/26 financial year to continue with rehabilitation and gravel-to-tar upgrades.' Furthermore, the MLM said it will give rebates of 25% and 50% on property rates. 'The threshold for qualification has been extended to five times the value of the SASSA Old Age Pension Grant, which equates to approximately R11 000.' MLM reveals that it has procured two high-speed vehicles for crime prevention purposes. 'We have made provision for the employment of law enforcement officers who will drive these high-speed vehicles, working alongside our CCTV cameras and other safety mechanisms to curb criminal activities in our municipality. The rollout of CCTV cameras in the Western and Northern regions has commenced, while a significant portion of the budget is being used to maintain existing cameras.' Puja Banerjee and Kunal Verma say they have been cheated by a friend, lost all their life savings: ‘Zero par laakar khada kar diya'; how to stay vigilant

Actor-couple Puja Banerjee and Kunal Verma disclosed that they have fallen prey to a major financial scam and lost all their savings. Without revealing details, the Tujh Sang Preet Lagai Sajna actors, who got married in 2020, shared that they had been cheated by someone they had trusted for the past three years. Expressing that they are reeling from the 'deep shock', and dealing with the devastating impact of the incident, Puja — in the video titled 'Lowest phase of our lives…need your support and prayers in this difficult time' — said, 'These past 2-3 months have been extremely difficult for us, and we have no idea what will happen next. We have been victims of a fraudulent financial scam, and we lost a huge amount.' She explained that they have taken a while to talk about it publicly. 'Bohot waqt laga humein iske baare mein baat karne mein. (We have taken quite a long time to open up about this). We are both in shock, and Kunal is deeply affected by this. We still get overwhelmed when we talk about it,' Puja continued. Opening up about the betrayal, Kunal added, 'When you trust someone for the past 3 years. Has been with you, becomes a part of your home and family.' Despite the fall, the couple is hopeful of emerging resilient. 'Zero par laakar khada kar diya hai par hum zero se waapis shuru karenge. (We have to start from zero, but won't give up. We don't want to give up). All we want is your support and prayers. We have complete trust in God,' Puja said. Hardeep Singh, founder of Capital Financial Distributors, said fraud committed by friends or acquaintances is a particularly painful and surprisingly common form of deception. The betrayal of trust makes these scams both emotionally and financially damaging. One should stay vigilant and look for red flags,' said Singh. What is the modus operandi? Trust is the primary tool. Fraudsters who are friends or acquaintances exploit existing trust, making their requests for money or investment seem legitimate. 'It is observed that these scams often involve requests to borrow money (with no intention to repay), or invitations to join multi-level marketing (MLM) schemes that are actually pyramid scams, and very high return guaranteed plans. Also, the scammer may share personal stories or emergencies to create urgency and lower your guard,' explained Singh. What to do? Victims often feel embarrassed and may blame themselves, which leads to under-reporting and isolation. 'Scamster must be spoken about in social circles, which would help others avoid such people. We need to stay aware and always take a moment to verify the situation before sending money, even if the request comes from someone you know,' said Singh. *Confirm the legitimacy of the request. *Be wary of urgent requests, especially those involving secrecy, pressure, or emotional stories that demand immediate action. *Keep records of requests and conversations, which can help if you need to report the fraud later. *Share your story to create awareness, which may help someone avoid cheating.

Bride 'Blew Her Entire Savings.' Now, She Expects Her Sister to Help Pay for Her 'Lavish' Wedding

A woman is questioning whether she's wrong to refuse to help her sister pay for her "dream wedding," after she lost money in a multilevel marketing scheme In a post on Reddit's "Wedding Shaming" forum, the woman shared that her sister has asked to use her savings to fund her wedding "She knows I have a decent chunk of change saved and she's been dropping not-so-subtle hints about how I'm 'so responsible with my money' and 'don't have a mortgage yet' so surely I can spare some cash for her big day," the Reddit user wroteA woman wonders whether she's wrong to refuse to help her sister pay for her "dream wedding." In a post on Reddit's "Wedding Shaming" forum, the 30-year-old woman opened up about her sister's "serious main character energy when it comes to her wedding." "The kicker — she expects me to foot a significant chunk of the bill after she blew her entire savings — $25k — on a ridiculous MLM [multilevel marketing] scheme," she explained. According to the OP (original poster), her sister, a 32-year-old named Chloe, has a history of being "terrible with money." "Think impulsive buys loans for trips, the whole nine yards," the OP wrote. "Meanwhile, I've been diligently saving every penny for a down payment on a house. Our financial approaches are polar opposites." "About a year and a half ago, Chloe got completely sucked into one of those 'boss babe' wellness drink MLMs," she continued, referring to the business model where participants earn money from both selling products or services and recruiting others into the network. According to the Federal Trade Commission, many MLM companies are illegal pyramid schemes. "I tried to warn her gently at first, then more forcefully as she sank more and more cash into inventory and training. She was convinced she'd be a millionaire. Spoiler alert: she's not," the OP added. "She flushed her entire $25k savings down the drain and is now financially back at square one." According to the Redditor, Chloe is engaged and has plans for a "massive, fairytale wedding — the kind that easily costs $50k+" — and she's asked her sister for help paying for the lavish event. "She knows I have a decent chunk of change saved and she's been dropping not-so-subtle hints about how I'm 'so responsible with my money' and 'don't have a mortgage yet' so surely I can spare some cash for her big day," the OP wrote. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. Eventually, the sister "straight-up asked" for the money, and the OP was taken aback by her justifications for the bold request. " 'You know,' she said, 'if you even threw in like 10 grand it would make such a huge difference. You don't really need all that house money right this second and this is my one shot at the wedding I've always pictured,' " the OP wrote, recounting the conversation. The OP said she absolutely "lost it" after this request and promptly shut it down. "I told her, 'Chloe there is NO WAY I'm paying for your wedding. You literally flushed your savings down the drain on a scam, even though everyone told you not to and now you expect me to bankroll your fantasy. My savings are for MY future, not to bail you out of your past mistakes,' " she said. Her sister got upset, calling the OP "selfish" and "unsupportive." The sisters' mom also took Chloe's side, telling her other daughter: "Family helps family." "Honestly, I feel a little bad for making her cry and I do love my sister," the OP admitted. "But I also feel like I'm being put in an impossible position. She made her bed and now she expects me to pay for the luxury sheets." In the comments section, readers were quick to take the OP's side, agreeing that she shouldn't have to fork over her hard-earned savings just because she isn't getting married or buying a home right now. "Any time she brings it up, just remind her that 'no' is your final answer," one person advised. "If she wants a $50k wedding, then she and her fiancé had better start saving that." "I find it extremely audacious that you are being asked to give up or push back your dream because of your sister's poor financial decisions," another commenter said. "She needs to learn to live within her means. And right now, those means do not extend to a $50k wedding." Read the original article on People
