MLB rumors: Rival exec suggests Red Sox make Brewers trade

The post MLB rumors: Rival exec suggests Red Sox make Brewers trade appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Boston Red Sox have already made one franchise-altering decision this season by choosing to trade third baseman Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. At least one person believes they should be ready to make another. Mark Feinsand of recently reported that one rival executive believes Boston should make a trade for Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Advertisement 'What the general public never factors into their knee-jerk trade reactions is what the teams trading away the large contract can now go do with those dollars,' an NL executive said hours after the trade. 'Boston should go trade for someone like [Brewers first baseman] Rhys Hoskins right now. Then the deal takes on a whole new dimension.' Boston has newfound flexibility after moving Devers, and since they are in the hunt for an American League Wild Card spot, they may be willing to make another splash sooner rather than later. 'I think we're absolutely going to look at the best use of those resources [from financial flexibility created by the Devers trade] and could put them to use as early as the 2025 Trade Deadline,' Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said earlier this week. Schematically, Hoskins would fit the Red Sox perfectly. The club signed All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman shortly before the start of Spring Training. Additionally, first baseman Triston Casas is out for the year with a left patellar tendon rupture. Advertisement Adding Hoskins would instantly fill an important vacancy. The 32-year-old has hit 11 home runs, 38 RBIs across 71 games this season. He has mashed 185 career home runs and has also earned an .821 lifetime OPS. Further, he was a pivotal part of the Philadelphia Phillies' run to the World Series in 2022. If Boston is searching for a player who can immediately contribute to a winning effort, Hoskins has already proven that he can succeed under intense circumstances. But, it remains to be seen whether or not the Red Sox will look to make such a significant swing on a player who will likely be a free agent at the end of the season. Trade Idea Moves Twins' Byron Buxton to Phillies

Trade Idea Moves Twins' Byron Buxton to Phillies originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox may have started a new trend in their trade of Rafael Devers: using the trade market to offload a superstar previously signed to lengthy, big-money deals. Advertisement In 2023, Devers signed a 10-year, $313.5 million extension to his already-existing contract, which was set to expire at the end of the season. The financial commitments the Red Sox had to the slugger did not deter them from moving him just one and a half years into the deal, as they traded him to the San Francisco Giants. Such a transaction has only happened one other time in MLB history – when the Miami Marlins traded Giancarlo Stanton to the New York Yankees three years into a 13-year, $325 million deal in 2018. That beckons a double-barreled question: When will this kind of deal happen again, and who will it involve? According to Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer, the Minnesota Twins and Philadelphia Phillies should field calls to each other about All-Star outfielder Byron Buxton, a player who also won a Gold Glove Award in 2017. Buxton is currently in year four of a seven-year, $100 million deal with the Twins. Mandatory Credit: Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports © Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports "Buxton's long-term future... remains suspect. He is keeping up his act as a two-way star when he does play, but he's a 31-year-old with one of the most cluttered injury histories in recent memory. And as such, the Twins should be wondering if this is their last best chance to sell high on him," Rymer wrote. Advertisement "Because he has full no-trade protection, he'll only go anywhere if he wants to. But if the Twins present him with a chance to spend the rest of his prime with a proper World Series contender, it could be hard for him to turn it down." Rymer sees the Phillies as an ideal trade destination for Buxton because he would fulfill a need the team has been missing for years. "Not since the early days of Odúbel Herrera's career have the Phillies had a reliable regular in center field, much less a star. They have managed to succeed despite this, but that should raise questions about how far they could go if they actually went out and got a star to roam the middle of their outfield," Rymer wrote. "A trade for Buxton would fit the bill, and such a deal would be right up Dave Dombrowski's alley." Advertisement Through 57 games this season, Buxton is hitting .280 with 15 home runs, 45 RBIs, 12 stolen bases, a .898 OPS, and 2.6 WAR (according to Baseball Reference). Cubs Trade Idea Ships Pair of Prospects for Rays RHP Zack Littell

Cubs Trade Idea Ships Pair of Prospects for Rays RHP Zack Littell originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Chicago Cubs should find themselves as buyers at this year's trade deadline. They could lose faith in the Kyle Tucker negotiations and choose to blow everything up, but, at 45-28 and 6.5 games up for the National League Central lead, it feels like win-now mode. Advertisement One potential option is Tampa Bay Rays right-handed starting pitcher Zack Littell. Mark Feinsand of listed the Cubs as a possible fit. Here is what that trade could look like: Chicago receives: RHP Zack Littell Tampa Bay gets: RHP Brody McCullough (No. 23), RHP Nazier Mulé (No. 26) Littell, 29, is a pending free agent, and should the Rays deal him, he would likely only require a mid-tier prospect or a pair of lower-tier ones. He has been solid in this Tampa Bay rotation this season, going 6-7 with a 3.88 ERA, a 5.32 FIP, and 61 strikeouts to 11 walks over 92 and 2/3 innings. He is far from the perfect pitcher, but would slot in nicely at the back of the Cubs' staff, particularly with Shota Imanaga still recovering from his left hamstring injury. Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell (11) walks off the field after he is ejected in the fifth inning against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Osentoski-Imagn Images Chicago should feel decent about its trio of Matthew Boyd (2.79 ERA, 3.60 FIP), Jameson Taillon (3.48 ERA, 4.59 FIP), and Colin Rea (3.84 ERA, 4.14 FIP). But, they are all north of 33 years old, and adding another innings eater will help their postseason chances. Advertisement Rookie Cade Horton (3.47 ERA, 3.73 FIP) deserves a stay based on his first six starts. However, he also dealt with shoulder issues last summer and was limited to just 34 and 1/3 innings. Perhaps the Cubs, trying to monitor his workload, seek Littell's services. Adding Littell would also likely force Ben Brown (5.57 ERA, 3.44 FIP) into long relief duties as he has failed to build upon an impressive 2024 rookie campaign. Littell is not the sole piece that gets the Cubs over the hump, but he can provide value to a team in search of pitching support. Phillies Announce Trade With Rangers for Minor League Pitcher Nolan Hoffman

Phillies Announce Trade With Rangers for Minor League Pitcher Nolan Hoffman originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With a questionable bullpen, the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to make some changes in the buildup to the MLB trade deadline. Whether the moves are big or small, the team will be shaking things up within their organization in the bullpen. Advertisement The Phillies announced on Twitter/X that on June 18th, they had completed a trade with the Texas Rangers. In the deal, they are acquiring right-hander Nolan Hoffman for cash considerations, and he is subsequently being optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Hoffman is the second Hoffman to join the team in the pat few yers, both being relievers. Though this Hoffman isn't as great as Jeff Hoffman was during his time in the city. But, Nolan Hoffman will provide depth on the roster in the bullpen. The 27-year-old right hander from the Rangers system has been pitching in the Minor Leagues since 2018. With the Phillies needing more depth in the bullpen, whether it's due to poor play, injuries, or suspension, Hoffman is a depth addition for the team at best. but, despite being depth, he's still a worthwhile addition to the team. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) celebrates a run scored in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Chenoy-Imagn Images Down in Triple-A for the Rangers, Hoffman had a 5.91 ERA through 22 games, three of which were as a starter, his first start since 2021 in the Minors. Across his 35 innings pitched, Hoffman struck out 46 batters and walked 21. Advertisement He also allowed batters to hit .245 off him in 2025, and his 1.46 WHIP is the third-highest in his Minor League career. He's also allowed four home runs this season, more than double any of his previous years in the Minors. While Hoffman hasn't had his best season on the mound, he does have a career 3.65 ERA across 185 appearances in the Minor Leagues. He had initially been an intriguing option for the Rangers in the Spring, but with his 5.91 ERA, he wasn't making any headway into the Majors. But, considering the Phillies have had a knack for helping pitchers turn things around, the team taking a chance on Hoffman is worth it. If the Phillies do get something out of Hoffman, it wouldn't be the first time that the Phillies helped a Hoffman turn his career around in the Majors. Red Sox Stars Break Silence After Rafael Devers Trade

Red Sox Stars Break Silence After Rafael Devers Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Boston Red Sox's decision to trade Rafael Devers will go down as one of the most shocking moves in MLB history. Sparking an intense reaction from the media and fans alike, Monday was the first time Red Sox players had an opportunity to share their opinions. Advertisement Shortstop Trevor Story admitted, via MassLive's Christopher Smith, that the timing of the trade was 'weird' based on how the team is playing. Story added that manager Alex Cora is the only person to have addressed the team before Monday's game against the Seattle Mariners. Not even Boston's chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, the man responsible for trading Devers, has spoken to the team yet. Breslow, rightfully, is taking the most blame for trading away Devers. The two had lingering issues dating back to the offseason when the third baseman refused a positional change. Breslow signed Alex Bregman to play third base instead, forcing Devers' hand. The three-time All-Star felt disrespected, and it was impossible to repair their relationship afterward. Boston Red Sox designated hitter Rafael Devers (11).Ken Blaze-Imagn Images Despite Breslow's responsibility in the deal, starting pitcher Walker Buehler, who is used to mid-season trades during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers, said the team is not entitled to an explanation. However, the former All-Star added that "From an outside perspective, it would be logical for Breslow to address the team,' via Smith's post on X. The most noticeable reaction was from Boston's ace Garrett Crochet, who had a lot to say and started by echoing Buehler's comments. Advertisement 'I think that the front office doesn't owe us an explanation. Quite frankly, what they're doing is what's best for the team, and we have to respect that. I think as players, it's on us to continue to do our job.' Crochet then shared a strong message to the team and fanbase in the aftermath of the Devers trade. 'Obviously, he has a big presence in the lineup. We'll miss that, but we can't really just sit here and harp on that. I don't think that does anybody in this room any good. I don't think that that's what the fan base wants to hear us say either." Crochet finishes, "Quite frankly, for us, it's just let's keep stacking wins. We're coming off a really good week, but all that did was get us back to .500. We have to keep pushing forward, and we still have a lot of ground to make up to be the team we want to be.' Pushing forward is what Boston will have to do, but now without the top slugger. As Red Sox players try to process the change, they must focus on their three-game series against the Mariners before the emotions reach an ultimate high on Friday, when they travel to San Francisco to face Devers for the first time in his new threads.
