Braves' Didier Fuentes to debut vs. Marlins as youngest active player in the majors
Associated Press MIAMI (AP) — Braves right-hander Didier Fuentes will become the youngest active player in the majors and youngest Atlanta starter since 1969 when he makes his debut against the Miami Marlins on Friday night. Atlanta called up the 20 year old from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier in the day — three days after his birthday — to start the first of a three-game series at Miami. Fuentes will be the third-youngest starting pitcher in Braves history, only older than Charlie Vaughan and Mike McQueen. Vaughan debuted on September 3, 1966, at 18. McQueen pitched his first game on October 2, 1969, at 19. Fuentes will also be the youngest MLB starter to debut since Julio Urias on May 27, 2016, for the Los Angeles Dodgers. 'I had to go online and see what he looked like, honestly," Braves manager Brian Snitker quipped before Friday's game. Snitker met Fuentes on Thursday night. The youngster's maturity stood out to him. 'I'm sure he's going to have some nerves because he's human and wants to do good," Snitker said. "There's nothing like it. That's why it's always such a big deal when a guy debuts.' Fuentes, who is rated on MLB Pipeline as the Braves' No. 10 prospect, posted a 4.81 ERA at three levels this season. His most recent start was his debut with Gwinnett, where he scattered three hits over 4 2/3 innings while striking out six. In 33 minor league starts, he's averaging about 11 strikeouts per nine innings. The Colombia native will not be on a pitch count, and his start will provide rest for the regular members of Atlanta's rotation as the Braves prepare for a four-game series at the New York Mets next week. The Braves have won three straight after sweeping the Mets to extend New York's losing streak to six games. Atlanta began the day trailing the Mets and Phillies by 10 games in the NL East. Before heading to New York, they'll play their second series of the season against the Marlins, who will use the first few innings of Friday's game as a feeling-out process for a pitcher they don't know much about. 'It's tough," Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said. 'Very little upper-level experience, but obviously Atlanta wouldn't bring him up if they didn't feel like he could come up and compete and get major league hitters out.' Snitker said that unknown could work in Fuentes' favor. 'You can watch some video. I'm sure they have minor league video and things,' he said, 'but until you get in the box and feel a guy, you don't know what to do until you get in there. So hopefully that works in Didier's defense.' ___ AP MLB: recommended

Red Sox couldn't land top Giants prospect in trade package for Rafael Devers
The Red Sox shot for the moon in their Rafael Devers trade negotiations with the Giants. The Athletic's Andrew Baggarly reported that Boston brass had 'insisted upon 20-year-old first base prospect Bryce Eldridge' in trade talks around Devers, 'but the Giants refused to consider including him in the deal.' The Red Sox instead settled for Jordan Hicks, Kyle Harrison, James Tibbs III and Jose Bello in exchange for the three-time All-Star. Advertisement Eldridge, the Giants' top prospect and the No. 19 prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline, is hitting .251/.323/.474 with 10 homers during stints in Double-A and Triple-A this season. San Francisco Giants' Rafael Devers speaks at a news conference before a baseball game against the Cleveland Guardians in San Francisco, Tuesday, June 17, 2025. AP Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey said Devers won't stand in the way of Eldridge's development Advertisement 'We see his development path as the same,' Posey said of the young slugger, per The Athletic. 'He's going to keep (playing) first, keep developing at the plate. It's a conversation Raffy and I have had already about Bryce and the future that we potentially see him having.' After refusing to play first base for the Red Sox amid a clash with the front office during his last weeks in Boston, Devers changed his attitude on where he's willing to play in the field for San Francisco. Giants manager Bob Melvin said he plans to play Devers at a 'little bit of DH and a little bit of first' going forward. Former Iowa baseball pitcher Adam Mazur recalled by Miami Marlins, will start vs. Phillies
Former Iowa baseball pitcher Adam Mazur recalled by Miami Marlins, will start vs. Phillies Adam Mazur will start tomorrow in his #Marlins debut. — Christina De Nicola (@CDeNicola13) June 18, 2025 After being recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville by the Miami Marlins (29-42), former Iowa baseball right-handed pitcher Adam Mazur will start on the mound tonight vs. the Philadelphia Phillies (43-30) from loadDepot Park in Miami, Fla. The former Hawkeye made his MLB Debut last season with the San Diego Padres, who selected the 6-foot-2, St. Paul, Minn., native with their second-round pick (No. 53 overall) in the 2022 MLB Draft. In his eight starts with the Padres, he posted a 7.49 ERA over 33.2 innings, including 22 strikeouts. At the end of July, the Padres traded Mazur, along with second baseman Jay Beshears, left-hander Robby Snelling, and third baseman Graham Pauley to Miami in exchange for left-hander Tanner Scott and right-hander Bryan Hoeing. Mazur would finish out the remainder of the 2024-25 season with Triple-A Jacksonville. 'Very cool. Just excited for this opportunity,' Mazur told reporters. 'I'm open to whatever. Not sure what to expect, but I'm just excited to be here.' So far this season with the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Mazur made 12 starts, posting a 3.62 ERA over 59.2 innings, including 55 strikeouts to 16 walks. According to MLB Pipeline, Mazur is the Marlins' No. 12 overall prospect and defines his best pitch as his tight upper-80s slider/cutter. 'Just going to go out there and compete and give these guys a chance to win. That's the name of the game up here. Go out there, compete, and give them a chance to win every single time you take the mound.' During his lone season with Iowa in the 2021-22 campaign, Mazur finished with a 7-3 record with a 3.07 ERA, to go along with 98 strikeouts to 30 base-on-balls through 93 2/3 innings in 15 total appearances. Mazur also earned the 2022 Big Ten Pitcher of the Year award and was named to the first-team All-Big Ten roster. With former Hawkeyes Jack Dreyer and Adam Mazur both on MLB 40-man rosters, it's the first time under head coach Rick Heller that Iowa has had multiple players in the majors at the same time. While the Marlins are currently in a fifth-place tie with the Washington Nationals at a distant 15 games back of the NL East-leading New York Mets, the Marlins have been on a decent trend by winning 6 of their last 10 games. As the team tests out their up-and-coming talent, Mazur should be able to stick around in the rotation, barring any setback. Tonight's Marlins vs. Phillies matchup will begin at 5:40 p.m. CT, with Philadelphia scheduled to start left-hander Ranger Suarez (5-1, 2.32 ERA) in opposition to Mazur.
