Aaron Judge gets a day off from historic Yankees tear

Try it free KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Aaron Judge nearly homered his way out of his first day off all year. Instead, in Game 67, the best hitter in baseball finally rested. Advertisement Nearly a week ago, Aaron Boone had circled Thursday as a good day to have Judge out of the lineup — or at least the most optimal, since there never is a good day not to have him batting second or third in the lineup. Judge's response was that if he homered in each of the first two games against the Royals, Boone would have to reconsider. Sure enough, Judge went deep Tuesday and again Wednesday for his 25th home run of the year and brought the evidence back to his manager. 'He kind of looked at me, like, 'Hey…' ' Boone said with a grin Thursday at Kauffman Stadium. 'So I was reconsidering. But I think we both wanted to stay disciplined to this one. Right time for it.' Advertisement Judge started the first 67 games of last season before getting his first day off June 10. Getty Images Advertisement But the Yankees are early in a stretch of 16 games in 16 days. They were scheduled to get into their hotel in Boston in the early hours of Friday morning. They have a day game Sunday after a night game Saturday. And the Royals started a pair of lefties in the first two games of this series before right-hander Seth Lugo took the mound Thursday. 'I never want him out of the lineup, but I feel like one of those that hopefully pays some dividends in the long run of keeping him fresh,' Boone said. 'Today seemed like the day that made some sense.' The day off allowed an epic start to the season to breathe for the first time. He had reached base safely in 62 of those 66 games and reached base multiple times in an MLB-high 51 games, just the third player in the modern era to accomplish that, joining Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Judge also is the only player in the modern era to record as many home runs and as high of a batting average as he did through his club's first 66 games of a season. 'It's getting out of hand at this point,' Clarke Schmidt said. 'It feels like every time he goes up there, he's ready to do damage. Obviously, the average is what it is. This season, he entered Thursday leading the American League in batting average by 28 points (over Athletics rookie Jacob Wilson) and RBIs by two (over Red Sox DH Rafael Devers) while trailing Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh by one home run. 'The most amazing part of it is I feel like he's just playing well — I don't feel like he's been on fire at any point,' Boone said. 'That's what's amazing about it. I think he's just out there playing well. Getting his hits, doing his thing. But in a lot of ways, I'm honestly still waiting for him to catch fire. And then that's when it gets really scary.'

New York selected Alonso No. 64 overall in the 2016 MLB Draft. The Florida alum made his big-league debut on Opening Day in 2019, and he led baseball with 53 homers that season. The 6-foot-3-inch, 245-pounder made his playoff debut that season as well, going 3-for-10 with one homer and one RBI in three games. Alonso also made the All-Star team in 2023 and 2024. The 30-year-old is slashing .301/.396/.594 with 17 homers and a MLB-high 61 RBI through 66 games. Meanwhile, his .990 OPS also ranks fifth. Matt Chapman's first Giants walk-off HR gives S.F. another one-run win
San Francisco's hesitant offense has an unhappy tendency of disappearing during Logan Webb 's starts. Going into Saturday, Webb had by far the lowest run support among the Giants ' starters and that continued all the way through his time on the mound against the Braves. Then came the ninth inning, when the Giants used their other offensive technique, the walkoff win, making it two in a row. With two outs and another great Webb performance looking as if it were for naught, Matt Chapman clocked a two-run homer to propel San Francisco to a 3-2 victory over Atlanta, the team's MLB-high eighth walkoff win of the season. It was Chapman's first walkoff homer for San Francisco – and his first walkoff hit and RBI with the team. Atlanta starter Bryce Elder was just as terrific as Webb on Saturday, striking out a career-high 12 and allowing just three hits in eight innings. It was Elder's first career appearance against San Francisco, only one start removed from a 15-day trip to the minors. But Piece Johnson got the ninth and again was on the wrong side of a walkoff; he had also uncorked the decisive wild pitch in the 10th inning on Friday. Trust Webb to be the guy on the mound when an opposing pitcher put together his best start of the year: He gets just 2.8 runs per 27 outs while being the pitcher of record. The run support for the rest of the regular starters is slightly more robust: Robbie Ray gets 4.4 runs of support per 27 outs while the pitcher of record; Landen Roupp 4.0; Justin Verlander 3.8; Jordan Hicks, 3.8; Hayden Birdsong 3.4, all per Webb struck out 10 in his six innings and walked zero; over his past four starts, he's struck out 32 and walked one in 24 innings. The only other Giants with as many or more since 1893 are Madison Bumgarner (12) and Tim Lincecum (five). Juan Marichal had four. Webb struck out nine of the first 14 batters Saturday, including getting Ronald Acuña Jr. and Drake Baldwin swinging with two on in the third. In the fourth, he struck out the side, all looking, something that Braves manager Brian Snitker took exception to until he was tossed by home-plate umpire Gabe Morales. Given the way Webb was working, Wilmer Flores' leadoff homer in the fourth seemed like a major blow, but the Braves love a tight game as much as the Giants do, and Michael Harris II led off the fifth with his second career homer off Webb in just 13 at-bats. Atlanta added a run in the sixth to take the lead, but Webb might have done his best work of the day that inning. Acuna, Baldwin and Austin Riley rapped singles to load the bases with no outs, and Webb got cleanup hitter Matt Olson to pop up before getting a grounder from Marcel Ozuna. Hit even slightly harder, Webb would have emerged unscathed, but Ozuna's tapper was 74 mph and Chapman could only get the runner at second, with Ozuna beating the throw to first as a run scored. Webb finished his day by striking out Harris. The Giants and Braves top the majors with 27 one-run games apiece including each of the first two games against each other this year. Each of San Francisco's past 13 games has been decided by no more than two runs, the longest streak in franchise history, eclipsing a 12-game span from May 30-June 12, 1978. Briefly: Center fielder Jung Hoo Lee got the start off because of some slight back tightness but he could have played had there been a need, manager Bob Melvin said. Lee pinch hit in the eighth and struck out. … Melvin said that Justin Verlander (pectoral strain) feels good after throwing to hutters on Friday but the team hasn't decided when he'll come off the IL. … The club announced that catcher Sam Huff, who'd been designated for assignment Tuesday, cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Triple-A Sacramento, a welcome development for a team that doesn't have a lot of catching. 'As far as the catching position goes, depth can be ominous,' Melvin said, 'We were pulling for Sam to get a major-league job but he's gotten to know our pitching staff and did well with all our starting pitchers.'

Manny Machado, Padres claw past Pirates LOS ANGELES: Ben Rice hit a two-run home run and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough went six strong innings against his former club as the visiting New York Yankees avoided a three-game sweep in a World Series rematch with a 7-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday. DJ LeMahieu had four hits and drove in a pair of runs as the Yankees finished a 6-3 road trip against the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels and Dodgers. It was LeMahieu's first four-hit game since June of 2021. Yarbrough (3-0), who received his World Series ring this weekend after making 32 relief appearances with the Dodgers last season, gave up one run on four hits with no walks and five strikeouts in his fifth start of the season. Tommy Edman, Andy Pages and Max Muncy each hit home runs for the Dodgers, who saw a late surge fall short after scoring a combined 26 runs in two victories to start the series. Dodgers ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-4) gave up four runs while tying a career high with seven hits allowed in 3 2/3 innings as he gave up three walks. He failed to complete five innings for the first time this season. The Yankees took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a single from Jasson Dominguez, before the Dodgers tied it in the second on Edman's ninth home run. New York moved in front for good in the third inning when Rice followed a leadoff walk to Aaron Judge with a two-run home run to center field. Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells singled with one out and Volpe scored on a two-out wild pitch from Yamamoto. The Dodgers closed within 6-3 in the seventh inning against right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga when Pages and Muncy hit home runs in a span of three batters. Muncy hit his third home run in two games and now has seven on the season. LeMahieu's fourth hit of the game was an RBI double in the ninth. Dominguez hurt his left thumb after stealing second base in the fifth inning. The Dodgers were playing without Mookie Betts, who missed the series with a fracture at the tip of a toe on his left foot. Padres beat Pirates Manny Machado homered and knocked in the tiebreaking run during a four-run seventh-inning rally as the San Diego Padres stopped the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates 6-4 on Sunday. Machado's sacrifice fly to deep center scored Elias Diaz with the run that put San Diego ahead 5-4. Tyler Wade capped the big inning by stroking an infield single off the glove of reliever Caleb Ferguson that plated Fernando Tatis Jr. Adrian Morejon (3-2) got the last out of the seventh to pick up the win and Robert Suarez pitched the ninth for his MLB-high 19th save. It was the third straight series win for the Padres, who will play 17 of their next 20 games in a 21-day stretch against winning teams. Tanner Rainey (0-1) was tagged with the loss after losing the strike zone in the seventh. He was charged with all four runs, allowing just one hit but walking three. The only hit was Diaz's pinch-hit RBI single that scored Xander Bogaerts to make it 4-3. Rainey walked Tatis to load the bases and Luis Arraez greeted Ferguson with a run-scoring single to left that tied the score. Machado cracked his seventh homer off Andrew Heaney in the bottom of the first to stake Padres starter Randy Vasquez to an early lead. But the Pirates used the long ball to take control in the third as Andrew McCutchen drilled a two-run shot to left, his fifth of the year and second in as many games. Ke'Bryan Hayes added an RBI single later in the third and Adam Frazier made it 4-1 in the fourth with a solo blast to left-center, his third of the year. Vasquez left later in the inning after permitting four runs on six hits and three walks in 3 1/3 innings with three strikeouts. Heaney retired 13 in a row in one stretch, departing after Jackson Merrill doubled home Arraez with two outs in the sixth.
