How much the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ will set you back in SA

The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ is the German carmaker's latest performance offering to reach South Africa. Available exclusively as a saloon (other markets have the option of an estate), this Affalterbach missile is powered by a 330kW/560Nm 3.0 l six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired to a 120kW/480Nm e-motor integrated into the vehicle's nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission. Total system output is rated at 430kW and 750Nm worth of torque; figures good enough to propel the E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon from 0-100km/h in 4.0 seconds and on to an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h. Specify the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package and you'll have access to the carmaker's Race Start launch control system, which momentarily unlocks an extra 20kW. When activated, 0.2 seconds is shaved from the 0-100km/h dash. The vehicle's maximum speed is also increased to 280km/h. Impressive straight-line performance aside, the E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon offers a maximum 101km of pure electric driving range at speeds up to 140km/h courtesy of its 28.6kWh (21.22kWh usable) lithium-ion battery pack mounted beneath the boot floor. When plugged into a 60kW DC fast charger, the vehicle's battery can be brought from 10% to 80% charge in about 20 minutes. Maximum energy recuperation has been increased to 120kW, with three levels available using the rocker paddles on the steering wheel. To handle this extra power, Mercedes-AMG have given the E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon a stiffer body, wider front track, larger brakes and rear-wheel steering. 19" alloy wheels are fitted as standard though customers can upgrade to more substantial 20" or 21" forged alloy wheels. Other technical highlights include a unique AMG Ride Control steel sprung suspension system with specially tuned two-valve adaptive adjustable damping. Drivers can also switch between three preset damper modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport+. Ensuring prodigious grip in all conditions is the AMG Performance 4Matic +all-wheel drive system. Featuring an electromechanically controlled clutch, it's designed to automatically vary the amount of torque distributed between the axles depending on the driving mode selected: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Smoothness, Individual, Electric and Battery Hold. Standout exterior tweaks come in the shape of an illuminated AMG radiator grille, more pronounced front wheel arches, bigger air intakes to help keep under-bonnet temps in check, a prominent rear diffuser and a pair of double exhaust tailpipes. The interior benefits from a MBUX multimedia system offering AMG-specific displays and features, illuminated trim in grey open-pore ash wood, electrically adjustable AMG sports seats upholstered in synthetic leather and an AMG steering wheel stitched in Nappa leather. The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon is now available at dealerships and retails from R2,499,596. Pricing includes a five-year/100,000km service and maintenance plan.

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé lands in South Africa

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé is now officially available in South Africa. Recently seen flexing its muscle at the 2025 Simola Hillclimb in Knysna — where it claimed class honours in the road and supercar category — this German bahn-stormer is driven by a 4.0l twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine producing 450kW and 850Nm, paired with a 150kW/320Nm electric motor. Combined, the powertrain delivers a staggering 600kW and 1,420Nm of torque. This is sent to all four wheels via a nine-speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission and fully variable AMG Performance 4Matic+ system. Mercedes-AMG claims a 0—100km/h sprint time of just 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 320km/h. On the more sensible end of the spectrum, the GT 63 S E Performance also offers an electric-only range of up to 13km, thanks to its F1-derived 400V, 6.1kWh battery. Connected to a 3.7kW onboard charger, it can be recharged using a household socket, wall box or public charging station. Adding more clever tech into the mix is the AMG Dynamic Select system, offering eight driving modes: Electric, Battery Hold, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, Sport+, Race and Individual. These can be selected via the AMG button and central display on the centre console or through the AMG steering wheel controls. Each mode tweaks the behaviour of the powertrain, gearbox, steering, damping, and exhaust note. Drivers can also toggle between four levels of energy recuperation — one of which allows for near 'one-pedal' driving. Other performance-focused features include active aerodynamic aids, such as a deployable rear spoiler and a concealed underbody flap that improve downforce at speed. AMG Active Ride Control with semiactive roll stabilisation and rear-axle steering further boost agility and stability across various driving conditions. Braking duties are handled by a ceramic high-performance composite system: six-piston fixed calipers and 420mm rotors up front, and single-piston floating calipers with 380mm discs at the rear. Wrapping these are 20" AMG 10-spoke alloy wheels fitted with high-performance tyres (295/35 front and 305/35 rear), with forged 21" wheels available as an option. Inside, the GT 63 S E Performance is as luxurious as it is potent. Standard features include a fully digital instrument cluster, an 11.9" portrait-orientated touchscreen running the latest MBUX infotainment system, and exclusive AMG Performance and Track Pace apps for telemetry and lap-time logging. Occupants are treated to Nappa leather sports seats, carbon-fibre interior trim, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an ergonomic AMG Performance multifunction steering wheel, adaptive cruise control, and active steering and lane-keeping assist. The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance Coupé is priced from R4,369,287, which includes a standard five-year/100,000km service and maintenance plan.

Mercedes Maybach: Monogrammed mastery

(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today Spice issue dated April 2025)In a stately setting in Udaipur, as the black and white, open-top, two-seater SL 680 Monogram Series rolled out, in the presence of global media, Mercedes-Maybach declared that only three units of the car had been allotted to the Indian market. At a hefty `4.2 crore price tag, it is quite likely that these three units are the season's most coveted pieces. At India Today Spice, the Maybach models that we've previously driven have conclusively been passenger cars. But this two-seater is one hundred per cent a driver's the bat, I've always been a fan of the upright bonnet star and this model features it, complimenting the chrome fin, while the double-scoop silhouette behind the seats gives it a striking, aerodynamic the Maybach motif printed all over the bonnet, it appears that Maybach's designers are taking a slightly different turn from their otherwise subtly placed brand logos in other models. Although, the Maybach motif that illuminates as well as the rose gold headlights do add a luxe touch to the overall appearance. The soft top too bears the Maybach logo, subtly imprinted in anthracite. Once inside, I love what the carmaker is calling the White Ambience, the two-tone black and white design leitmotif that runs through the car. I'd like to use the word ensconced, to describe the feeling of sitting on the handcrafted, white Nappa leather seats with a subtle Maybach motif. The cabin with its cheery blend of white and silver trims is impressive, as is the sporty digital instrument cluster that looms in front of you as a gentle reminder of the car's capabilities. Also, included is an adjustable centre display, which features the manufacturer's trusty MBUX user There's certainly a lot of sporty heft under the hood, with a 4.0 litre V8 biturbo engine, which pumps out a massive 585 bhp of power, which can take the two-seater to a top speed of 260 kmph. The claimed 0-100 kmph sprint is 4.1 seconds. To coddle the nitpicky driver even more, the car even comes with a sound-optimised exhaust system and an enhanced insulation mechanism when the roof is down. The carmaker promises a highly refined and stable drive experience under multiple conditions thanks to the rear-axle steering and an excellent suspension we may have come a long way from Maybach's emblematic Zeppelins to the SL 680 today, evolving through a slew of indulgent saloons in recent years, the head-turning effect, the commitment to bespoke craftsmanship and the philosophy of sporty driving experiences remains Rs. 4.2 crore (ex-showroom)Availability: Since March 2025Subscribe to India Today Magazine
