Amesbury mayor praises 'compassionate ethos' of local services
The Mayor of Amesbury has praised two local services for their "compassionate ethos." Councillor Dr Monica Devendran visited Alabaré's Veteran Self-Build programme and learning disabilities homes on Thursday, June 12. The charitable organisation, which supports vulnerable, homeless and marginalised people, said the mayor had been "seeing the difference" the services make to the lives of those who use them. The self-build project in Drummond Park, Ludgershall, helps formerly homeless ex-service personnel learn the skills to build homes that will eventually be available to them for independent living. The veterans also gain skills and the confidence to work in the construction industry. (Image: Alabaré) The Amesbury mayor also visited a nearby home that supports residents with learning disabilities. She spent time speaking to both residents and staff about their efforts to support residents to live as independently as possible. Councillor Devendran said the visits were "moving and uplifting, showcasing the compassionate ethos at the heart of Alabaré's work." She said: "When we invest in people and believe in their potential, we don't just rebuild homes — we rebuild hope, dignity and purpose." An Alabaré spokesperson said: "We're grateful to the mayor for taking the time to learn more about our work. "The Veteran Self-Build and learning disabilities homes are wonderful examples of how we're aiming to support those in marginalised communities to live happy, healthy and independent lives."

Luke Littler and Luke Humphries hit back at MBE jibe from former world champion
Darts sensation Luke Littler has reacted to former world champion Dennis Priestley, after he rubbished the awarding of an MBE to the 18-year-old. Littler won the 2025 World Darts Championship at the age of 17, becoming the tournament's youngest winner just a year after making the final as a 16 year old. His success has raised the profile of darts around the country, aided by his burgeoning rivalry with 30-year-old Luke Humphries who beat Littler in that 2024 final. Priestley, however, was not impressed with the pair being awarded MBEs in the King's Birthday Honours. Speaking to the Daily Express, the two-time world champion said: 'To be brutally honest, I don't think either Luke Littler or Luke Humphries have done enough to earn their MBEs just yet.' Priestley, nicknamed 'The Menace' during his career won the BDO world title in 1991 before claiming the WDC (which is now the PDC) prize three years later. Littler took to Instagram to reply to the 74-year-old Yorkshireman, and wrote: "Doesn't deserve an MBE but done more in 12 months than he ever did... that's what I would say anyway." His Instagram story has since been deleted. Priestley had said: "I think in time they could've done enough to warrant it but it feels very early, they have both won one World Championship each and are still young in their careers. 'Littler has been recognised for raising the popularity of darts which is great, but he can still do so much more. 'If he is getting an MBE this soon then you'd have to think he is on the right path to a knighthood, nothing would surprise me now.' Favourites for the tournament, Littler and Humphries were dumped out of the recent World Cup of Darts in their first match, losing to the German team in Frankfurt. The Northern Ireland pair of Daryl Gurney and Josh Rock went on to win the title, beating Wales' Gerwyn Price and Jonny Clayton in the final 10-9. Humphries joined in with challenging Priestley's words, taking to X to say it was 'disappointing to hear from a former pro' when the 'Menace' commented that the English pair had 'let their country down' in defeat at the World Cup. The Leeds United-supporting world champion has called for the incident to be moved on from after the war of words.

Cool Hand takes issue with harsh remarks of ex-hero Dennis Priestley Disappointed Luke Humphries has fired back at Dennis Priestley after the savage criticism launched out to him and Luke Littler by the darts legend. Cool Hand has responded to strong statements from the former World Darts Champion who hammered the England pair after their nightmare World Cup exit. Priestley didn't mince his words this week as he said they had let their country down and also stated Humphries and Littler were not yet deserving of the MBE honours which were handed to them on the even of the Frankfurt flop by The King. Littler was first to bite back with a post on social-media being noted only for a short time on Thursday before disappearing. However, Humphries has now used his X account to say: 'Disappointing to hear a top former pro who I admired say such a damaging thing to me and Luke. I didn't let my country down last year tho did I? One bad game for us and we will back next year to go again. Let's move on now.' Priestley roasted the pair after it emerged from rival Gerwyn Price that the duo had not sat together or practised as a pair in Germany. He said: 'Luke Littler and Luke Humphries let their country down at the World Cup of Darts, from what we've heard they weren't sitting together or practising together. 'When I was playing in pairs with Phil Taylor we practised together and sat together, we played all over the world and I only remember us getting beaten once. 'If you go on and win the tournament without practising then it doesn't matter, but when you go out without winning a game as the big favourites, it's not a good look. 'Having said that, I think they will learn from the experience and come back stronger. Don't be surprised to see them lifting the trophy next year.' Priestley also made it clear that he did not feel the the pair deserve such recognition from The King at this stage of heir careers. Humphries and Littler were both handed an honour from the Birthday List prior to their shocking loss to the hosts in Germany and The Menace added: 'To be brutally honest, I don't think either Luke Littler or Luke Humphries have done enough to earn their MBEs just yet. I think in time they could've done enough to warrant it but it feels very early, they have both won one World Championship each and are still young in their careers. 'Littler has been recognised for raising the popularity of darts which is great, but he can still do so much more. If he is getting an MBE this soon then you'd have to think he is on the right path to a knighthood, nothing would surprise me now.'
