Govt reform agenda progressing consistently, not mere rhetoric

KUALA LUMPUR: Claims that the reformasi agenda is not progressing are unfounded, as it is moving forward consistently. Senior press secretary to the Prime Minister, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, said the reformasi agenda is not something to be implemented overnight or merely expressed in statements, but rather is being executed through structured actions. 'Since the start of the Prime Minister's (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) administration, he has emphasised that the MADANI Government will always listen and stay open to constructive criticism. 'This stance is reflected in action. Every criticism is viewed as an opportunity for improvement. Today's successes mirror that approach,' he said. Tunku Nashrul said this during the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) daily briefing, broadcast live on both Anwar Ibrahim's and the PMO Malaysia's Facebook pages today. Tunku Nashrul said that, as outlined by the Prime Minister through the MADANI Economy Framework, the main goal is to elevate the nation's economic potential, enhance its capacity, and ensure the well-being of its citizens. He added that Malaysia's rise of 11 places to the 23rd rank in the IMD World Competitiveness Ranking 2025, up from 34th place last year, is due to the MADANI Government's sustained commitment and comprehensive implementation via a whole-of-government and whole-of-nation approach. He said this is the country's best performance since 2020, proving that economic and bureaucratic reforms are yielding results and that the MADANI Economy Framework is keeping the country's economy on the right track. 'This achievement also reflects the collective efforts to strengthen fiscal policy, simplify business processes, and accelerate public service delivery reforms, including over 1,000 initiatives under the Bureaucratic Red Tape Reform (RKB). 'For example, the national bureaucracy perception index has jumped 22 positions, a clear signal that reforms are delivering real results, not just at the national level but also with international recognition,' he said.

Court decision allowing appeal by SIS Forum will be examined to safeguard fatwa institution

KUALA LUMPUR: The Federal Court's decision to allow an appeal by women's rights group SIS Forum (Malaysia) against a fatwa issued by the Selangior Fatwa Committee, which had declared the organisation deviant from Islamic teachings, will be studied to ensure that the standing and authority of the fatwa institution remain safeguarded in the long term. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said that fatwas continue to play an important role in guiding Muslims on current issues that require syariah guidance. 'As the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department in charge of Religious Affairs, I respect the principle of the rule of law and judicial decisions made by the Federal Court as the highest judicial institution in the country's legal system. 'Therefore, close cooperation between the judicial, legislative and religious authorities is very important so that the function and authority of the fatwa institution remains respected within the framework of our country's constitutional system,' he said in a statement today. The MADANI Government, he said, would ensure that the administration of Islamic affairs in Malaysia is carried out fairly and based on the principles of shura, knowledge and the country's laws. 'At the same time, the MADANI Government will continue to uphold and defend the position of Islamic religious institutions in line with Article 3 of the Federal Constitution, which provides that Islam is the religion of the Federation,' said Mohd Na'im. The Federal Court today allowed the appeal by SIS Forum Malaysia and its co-founder Zainah Mahfoozah Anwar, in their legal challenge against a fatwa issued in 2014 by the Selangor Fatwa Committee declaring the organisation to have deviated from Islamic teachings. A four-judge panel led by Chief Justice Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat in a 3-1 majority decision set aside the fatwa, insofar as it applied to companies and institutions

WCR 2025 Performance Proves Effectiveness Of MADANI Govt's Economic Policies

PUTRAJAYA, June 19 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's performance in the World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR) 2025 demonstrates the country's investment appeal amid a challenging global landscape. Minister of Housing and Local Government Nga Kor Ming said that this achievement also underscores the effectiveness of the economic policies implemented by the MADANI Government. Malaysia jumped 11 places in the rankings to 23rd, marking the country's best performance since 2020 and signalling positive momentum in the national economic recovery and reform agenda. Nga, in a statement yesterday, said that Malaysia remains the third most attractive investment destination globally, drawing interest from global tech giants such as Intel, Microsoft, Amazon, and Infineon to expand their investments in the local market. 'Under the leadership of the MADANI Government, Malaysia's economic growth reached 5.1 per cent in 2024, exceeding the expectations of the World Bank and other international agencies. The Employees Provident Fund (EPF) dividend rate also increased to 6.3 per cent, higher than the previous year,' he said. The WCR is published annually by the Switzerland-based Institute for Management Development (IMD). It is a comprehensive report that assesses economies based on their capacity to generate and sustain a business-friendly environment that contributes to long-term prosperity. -- BERNAMA

Special meeting soon to decide action on online drug sales

PUTRAJAYA: A special meeting will be convened soon to discuss measures to curb the online sale of illicit substances, including drug-laced vape liquids. MADANI Government spokesperson and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the meeting will involve his ministry, the Ministry of Health (MOH), and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN). He said the outcome of the meeting would be presented to the Cabinet for further action, including enforcement against individuals selling illicit substances and the online platforms enabling such sales. 'This includes the sale of vape liquids believed to contain prohibited drugs via mobile applications and online platforms,' he added. 'This reflects the Cabinet's and the government's deep concern over the growing issue of prohibited products being widely sold online,' he said in a post-Cabinet meeting press conference today. Recently, public concern has been mounting over the presence of synthetic substances or drugs in vapes and e-cigarettes sold online. Several cases have also emerged linking the deaths of students to psychoactive substances, such as 'magic mushrooms', found in vape liquids. On June 5, Fahmi reportedly said that the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) had been instructed to monitor the sale of prohibited substances allegedly conducted via several social media platforms. Meanwhile, the MOH has set up a special committee to review existing legislation under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 to address the issue.

SST revision: Finance Minister II to provide further clarification

PUTRAJAYA: Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan will provide further clarification and explanation regarding the implementation of the targeted Sales Tax rate revision and expansion of the Service Tax scope. MADANI Government spokesman and Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said he was informed that the explanation on the matter will be delivered via a press conference or an official statement. Fahmi said the government takes public feedback seriously regarding the upcoming Sales and Service Tax (SST) revision. 'As the public is aware, the revenue collected will be channeled into developments such as the construction of schools and hospitals,' he said during his weekly media conference here today. On June 9, the Finance Ministry announced that the government will implement a targeted revision of items subject to the Sales Tax and an expansion of the Service Tax scope, effective July 1, in line with the Budget 2025 announced in October 2024. The measure is aimed at strengthening the country's fiscal position by increasing revenue and broadening the tax base without adding undue burden on the majority of Malaysians. The Sales Tax rate will remain unchanged for essential goods, while a rate of either five or 10 per cent will apply to discretionary and non-essential goods. The scope of the Service Tax will be expanded to include six new services, namely rental or leasing, construction, financial services, private healthcare, education, and beauty services.
