Apple wants AI to help build its next-generation chips

Apple Inc. is exploring the use of generative artificial intelligence to streamline and enhance the design of its custom silicon chips, a senior executive said, highlighting the tech giant's growing reliance on cutting-edge AI tools in hardware development. In previously undisclosed remarks made last month in Belgium, Johny Srouji, Apple's Senior Vice President of Hardware Technologies, said the company sees 'high potential' in applying AI to electronic design automation (EDA), the software used to create semiconductors. 'Generative AI techniques have a high potential in getting more design work in less time, and it can be a huge productivity boost,' Srouji said during a speech while accepting an award from Imec, a leading semiconductor research group that collaborates with major global chipmakers. Johny Srouji, Apple's Senior VP of Hardware Technologies on Apple Silicon: One of the key lessons Apple learned was that it needed to use the most cutting-edge tools available to design its chips, including the latest chip design software from electronic design automation… — Ray Wang (@rwang07) June 19, 2025 The comments, reported by Reuters, offer rare insight into how Apple plans to expand AI usage beyond software and services into its hardware innovation process — a space traditionally dominated by precision engineering and years-long timelines. Apple designs its own chips, including the A-series for iPhones and M-series for Mac computers, and relies on EDA tools developed by firms like Cadence Design Systems and Synopsys, both of which are integrating AI capabilities into their platforms. In his address, Srouji traced Apple's silicon journey from the introduction of the A4 chip in 2010 to the chips powering its latest Vision Pro headset. He credited the company's philosophy of embracing cutting-edge technologies — and taking risks — for its success. He pointed to the transition of the Mac lineup from Intel processors to Apple Silicon in 2020 as a defining moment. 'Moving the Mac to Apple Silicon was a huge bet for us. There was no backup plan, no split-the-lineup plan. So we went all in, including a monumental software effort,' Srouji said. While Apple has remained tight-lipped publicly about its generative AI roadmap, CEO Tim Cook has recently acknowledged that the company is investing heavily in the space. Analysts expect more AI-related announcements during upcoming hardware and developer events.

How AI laptops are silently making office life easier

AI in your laptop isn't just a buzzword anymore, it's actively reducing your workload. Artificial Intelligence is no longer confined to cloud-based chatbots or flashy marketing. It's built into your laptop, powering features that streamline daily tasks, boost efficiency, and improve your overall workflow, often without you noticing. You don't need to open a chatbot or run a prompt, it's already working in the background. AI is more than just chatbots: AI for everyday tasks Since the arrival of generative AI platforms like ChatGPT, on-device AI has become increasingly capable. Built-in tools now go beyond casual chat, summarising long documents, drafting emails, creating presentation outlines, and even generating context-specific visuals. For professionals in content creation or business communication, these tools reduce time spent on repetitive tasks while maintaining quality. Image creation and content enhancement AI-powered laptops also help in visual storytelling. Instead of relying on generic stock libraries, onboard AI can generate context-relevant images directly on the device. This feature supports work profiles like marketing, journalism and design workflows where tailored visuals elevate presentation impact. Smarter hardware with NPUs Laptops equipped with NPUs (Neural Processing Units), such as Apple's M-series MacBooks or Windows Copilot+ PCs, handle AI workloads efficiently without offloading tasks to the cloud. NPUs manage everything from biometric login to real-time voice and image recognition, freeing up CPU/GPU resources and improving responsiveness. This intelligent load balancing also extends battery life and optimises thermal output, ensuring cooler, quieter laptops with better endurance. Security, reimagined by AI Modern AI-enabled systems now handle real-time threat detection, behavioural monitoring, and predictive security actions. Facial and voice recognition systems provide stronger, faster authentication, while on-device AI reduces reliance on external servers, minimising the risk of data leaks or breaches. AI for collaboration and communication Laptops today come equipped with collaboration-friendly AI tools: These features improve communication across hybrid teams and global meetings, reducing friction and fatigue in digital workplaces. Accessibility and inclusivity AI significantly improves accessibility. For instance, features like live translations across 40+ languages, voice commands, screen readers, and real-time captions ensure that users across different regions and abilities can engage seamlessly with their devices. Smart maintenance and diagnostics AI doesn't just help users, it supports IT teams as well. With predictive diagnostics and intelligent alerts, modern laptops can identify potential hardware failures in advance, recommend solutions, and manage battery usage efficiently. This reduces downtime and improves device longevity in enterprise setups. From summarising documents and automating tasks to powering security and enhancing accessibility, AI is deeply embedded in the modern laptop experience. It's not a futuristic add-on but something that's already working behind the scenes, optimising how you work every day, without you even realising it.

Weichai's M-series large-bore engines reinforce their leadership in the global premium power sector

SYDNEY, May 21, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- From May 16 to 18, Australia's largest construction machinery exhibition — The National Diesel Dirt and Turf Expo (DDT) — grandly opened in Sydney. Weichai showcased its Baudouin M-series 6M33 pump diesel engine and 20M33 large-bore generator set at the event. At the exhibition site, the 20M33 large-bore generator set showcased itself as a "high-performance beauty," featuring a high-strength alloy steel crankshaft for enhanced structural integrity. Equipped with Weichai's proprietary ECU system optimized through advanced algorithms, it demonstrates exceptional step-loading capabilities. The standard high-flow fuel filter extends oil change intervals, effectively reducing operational costs. The 6M33 pump diesel engine also attracted crowds of clients at the event. Its critical components have undergone rigorous testing and market validation, ensuring high strength and reliability. Capable of operating in high-temperature environments up to 50°C, it has already accumulated over 12,000 hours of service in an Indonesian mine. With comprehensive system optimization, it achieves a minimum fuel consumption rate of 187.4 g/kWh. Leveraging advantages such as ultra-low fuel consumption, excellent transient load response, and superior noise reduction capabilities, Weichai's M-series large-bore engines have been widely adopted across diverse sectors including data centers, oil and gas, healthcare, high-altitude regions, railways, field rescue operations, and agriculture. The brand continues to strengthen its competitiveness in the global high-end power market. View original content to download multimedia: SOURCE Weichai Power Co.,Ltd
