Logan O'Hoppe powers Angels in rout of Astros

June 22 - Logan O'Hoppe hit two home runs and drove in four runs and Luis Rengifo also homered as the Los Angeles Angels cruised to a 9-1 victory over the Houston Astros on Saturday night in Anaheim, Calif. It was the fourth multi-homer game of O'Hoppe's career and the second this season. Zach Neto doubled twice and scored a run, Nolan Schanuel went 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and Taylor Ward doubled, scored twice and drove in two runs for Los Angeles, which snapped a two-game losing streak. Jose Soriano (5-5) picked up the win after allowing one run on three hits over 6 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out 10 -- the second time in three starts he hit double-digits in strikeouts. Jose Altuve walked three times and scored a run for Houston, which finished with just three hits. Brandon Walter (0-1), making the fourth start of his career, suffered the loss in yielding seven runs on nine hits in six innings. Walter, who had allowed a total of just three runs in his three previous starts, walked one and struck out six. Los Angeles took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Rengifo drilled a two-run homer 408 feet over the bullpen in left field. The Angels extended the lead to 6-0 with four runs in the third. Schanuel was hit by a pitch and went to second on Mike Trout's single. Taylor Ward then lined an opposite-field double down the right field line to drive in Schanuel and Trout. O'Hoppe followed with a home run to left-center, his first since May 22. Houston cut the lead to 6-1 in the fourth when Altuve led off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout, tagged and went to third on a long flyout to right by Cam Smith, and scored on a single by Christian Walker. Los Angeles increased its lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Schanuel, driving in Neto, who had doubled. O'Hoppe finished the scoring with his 16th home of the season in the seventh, a two-run blast to left, driving in Ward, who had walked. --Field Level Media

Angels to call-up top infield prospect Christian Moore for MLB debut: Source

The Los Angeles Angels are calling up their top infield prospect, second baseman Christian Moore, a league source told The Athletic. Moore was the No. 8 pick in last year's MLB Draft out of the University of Tennessee and was ranked as the Angels' No. 2 prospect by The Athletic's Keith Law. He'll be with the Angels as they travel to Baltimore to begin a seven-game road trip on Friday. Advertisement The call-up, while quick, is actually much later than expected for Moore. He was set to make his debut late last season, but a September knee injury sidelined him and delayed his arrival. After struggling in spring training, Moore went to Double-A Rocket City, where he did not hit well, posting a .665 OPS in 146 plate appearances. Still, he was promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake, where his offense took off. Moore hit .350 with four homers and 18 RBI in 92 plate appearances in Salt Lake, making the timing of his call-up seemingly imminent in recent days. He'll provide a boost to an Angels team that's gone 16-9 over its last 25 games, and enters Friday just four games back of first place in the American League West. The Angels have needed help on the infield amid copious struggles for Luis Rengifo, who has gone 74 consecutive plate appearances without an extra-base hit. Kevin Newman has also performed poorly on offense this season. In recent years, the Angels have called up their top prospects quicker than any other organization. Pitcher Chase Silseth was the first player from the 2021 MLB Draft to debut in the majors, while shortstop Zach Neto was the first player from the 2022 draft to get the call-up. First baseman Nolan Schanuel played his first game with the Angels just a few weeks after being selected in 2023. The front office has hoped that Moore will complement Schanuel and Neto as their infield core for many years. Neto's had an excellent start to the season, posting an .820 OPS with 10 home runs and 11 stolen bases. Schanuel's offense has picked up over the last month, and he has a .768 OPS on the season.

Rengifo lifts Angels over Rays 4-3; Tampa Bay loses fifth straight game

Luis Rengifo hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and the Los Angeles Angels rallied to beat Tampa Bay 4-3 Tuesday night, extending the Rays' losing streak to five in the opener of a 13-game homestand. Kenley Jansen allowed singles to Jake Mangum and Taylor Walls starting the ninth but escaped a second-and-third, no-outs jam for his third save. Yandy Díaz grounded to Rengifo, who threw out Mangum at the plate from third, and Jansen struck out Brandon Lowe and José Caballero to seal the Angels' third straight win. Tampa Bay drew 10,046 in its seventh sellout at Steinbrenner Field but dropped to 4-3 at its temporary home, the Yankees spring training ballpark. This series originally was scheduled for Anaheim but Major League Baseball rearranged the schedule to have the Rays play 19 of their first 22 games at home in an attempt to lessen the impact of summer storms at the open-air ballpark. The Rays' usual home, Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, has a dome that was damaged by Hurricane Milton last October. The Rays went 2 for 13 with runners in scoring position and stranded nine runners, including seven in the last three innings. Pete Fairbanks (1-1) was the loser. Tampa Bay's Kameron Misner was hit on the helmet by a 98.8 mph pitch from Brock Burke (2-0) in the eighth but stayed in the game. Anaheim's Kyren Paris hit his third homer this seasons, a two-run drive off Shane Baz, with a video review upholding there was no fan interference. Junior Caminero's homer off Ben Joyce started a three-run seventh that overcame a 2-0 deficit. Christopher Morel hit a tying double and scored on Misner's triple. Travis d'Arnaud hit a tying RBI grounder in the eighth. Morel was ejected by plate umpire Rob Drake after a called strike in the eighth. He had words with the umpire and slammed his bat. Jansen went 0 for 4, grounding into a double play, and is 1 for 24 in his first season with Tampa Bay. Angels LHP Yusei Kikuchi (0-1, 4.50 ERA) and Rays RHP starter Ryan Pepiot (0-1) Wednesday.
