New football pitch will 'improve quality of sport'

A full-size 3G football pitch is to be installed at East Riding Leisure Haltemprice. The project will cost more than £2m, but East Riding of Yorkshire Council said it had been awarded £360,000 towards the installation. Three football clubs have partnered with the council and will be the primary users of the new facility. A council spokesperson said the pitch would improve the quality of local sport and promote physical activity and overall wellbeing. The authority said a Local Football Facilities Plan had identified a lack of 3G football turf pitches in the Haltemprice area, and that there was a high demand from local clubs. East Riding of Yorkshire Council said the £360,000 contribution had come from commuted sums, which are financial contributions from third parties to pay for future maintenance responsibilities. The authority said in addition to the construction of the pitch there would be car parking and a changing facility at the leisure centre. The new pitch would also provide facilities for disability football. Tim Hicks, health and wellbeing facilities manager at the council, said: "The investment will provide a reliable playing surface, ensuring year-round access to the sports facility."
