Premiers Moe, Smith call for end to ‘federal interference' in resource development

WATCH: Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith call for end to 'federal interference' in resource development. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith are making a unified 'call for change' to federal policies that apply to resource development. 'Development of provincial resources is provincial responsibility, and that includes the development of our transmission and electricity grids – and if we can unite the common purpose, we can ensure that the rest of Canada hears our voices,' Smith told reporters following the meeting. The two leaders and their respective caucuses met in the border city of Lloydminster Wednesday. The meeting was advertised as a summit for the two governments to discuss enhancing their respective energy and agriculture sectors. 'This was a great opportunity for us to bring our caucuses together … working alongside, hopefully the federal government as well, in really correcting some of the regulatory space that we have in this nation," Moe added. During his remarks, Moe stated the importance of a port-to-port corridor in getting resources and energy to markets across the globe. The two governments included a list of priorities following the meeting. They included: Repealing or overhauling the Impact Assessment Act to respect provincial jurisdiction and eliminate barriers to nation building resource development and transportation projects. to respect provincial jurisdiction and eliminate barriers to nation building resource development and transportation projects. Eliminating the proposed oil and gas emissions cap Scrapping the Clean Electricity Regulations Lifting the oil tanker ban off the northwest coast Abandoning Canada's net zero vehicle mandate Repealing any federal law or regulation that purports to regulate industrial carbon emissions, plastics or the commercial free speech of energy companies. Moe reiterated his hope that Prime Minister Mark Carney and the federal government backs up statements made at the first ministers meeting in Saskatoon – including the intention to make Canada an energy superpower. The event comes just weeks after the first ministers meeting in Saskatoon – and not even a full day after G7 leaders wrapped up their summit in Kananaskis, Alta. -More details to come…

Moe, Smith repeat calls for federal action and support for energy projects

LLOYDMINSTER — The premiers of Alberta and Saskatchewan are repeating their calls for federal support for energy projects and the abandonment of some industry regulations. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Alberta's Danielle Smith say if Prime Minister Mark Carney wants Canada to have the strongest G7 economy, he needs to repeal policies like the West Coast tanker ban and net-zero electricity regulations. Moe says Canada's top priority should be building an energy corridor that connects the northwest coast to the coast of Hudson Bay. It's a pitch premiers have been making for over a month, since it was a featured recommendation at the western premiers' conference last month. Moe says a "port-to-port" connection would create wealth for centuries for all Canadians. Moe and Smith made the comments after the government caucuses of both provinces met in Lloydminster, a city that straddles their shared boundary. Border city of Lloydminster united through gardening

Just a block away from the border of Alberta and Saskatchewan there's a garden uniting green thumbs in Lloydminster. The Lloyd Public Gardens Society has established a green space on the Alberta side on 49th Street at 51st Avenue where fresh fruits and vegetables are starting to sprout out of raised beds dotting a vacant lot. "I had never started a community garden before but I knew I didn't want to organize plots for people to rent individually," said Amy Roper of the society. The goal was to be open to all, said the mother-of-two who's lived in the neighbourhood for the past 20 years and sits on the Downtown Redevelopment Committee to promote the city's core. "I wanted us to tend this land together, to have it very open and see what happens when neighbours just come together and practise gardening." The not-for-profit organization, established a year ago, rents the space for $1 a month from the local business next door, Red Bicycle Communications. Roper said getting the garden off the ground took about $40,000 in seed money in the way of grants and community donations. Then they needed to find volunteers to keep it running. Roper, an artisan weaver, enlisted a couple of friends, Brandi Hofer's and Stephanie Lindsay, who shared her passion for all things leafy and penchant for creativity to pitch in. "There is something almost magical that happens when you get your hands in the dirt and you actually connect with the plant," said Lindsay, who is the operations manager at Pioneer Landscaping. "It's just a really nice calm space to hang out in," she said, pointing to the apple tree in blossom, the potato patch and the garden trellis archway with twinkle lights perfect for selfies. Lindsay extended that connection past plants, through a Kindness Rock Garden where you can take a painted stone for inspiration or motivation and leave one to help the garden grow. She's also established the Lloydminster Keychain Library where "you can leave a trinket or another keychain, or you can take them off the board there." She takes things like toy cars and building blocks left behind and turns them into more community keychains, "in a revolving door of little art." Local artist and educator Brandi Hofer contribution frames the space in the form of a colourful mural on the two-storey wall. "It's two little girls playing in the park, pretending to be fairies in a garden," said Hofer, who drew on the inspiration of Indigenous photographer Randi Noble for her work. The mother-of-three said it's art imitating life now that kids like hers are playing in the space while half a dozen volunteers putter, plant and water. "They run around and you hear laughter, it's the essence of play," she said. The group also manages a number of flower boxes in front of businesses in the downtown core and has partnered with the Lloydminster Public Library to give gardening talks. "It's a way for our community to slow down and step back into that togetherness," said Hofer. Wallie Barnsley said it's not just children enjoying the space. The 86-year-old said the raised boxes are kid-friendly and senior-friendly. "It means you don't have to break your back to help out." Barnsley says volunteering here takes her back to her youth when she belonged to 4H in Marsden, Sask. She says she often meets another senior in the garden for a coffee and a muffin. "We pick up our deck chairs and meet here and have our visits. I think more of that will happen as the garden catches on."

Pipe bomb found in Lloydminster, police say there could be others

An RCMP cruiser is pictured with the logo painted on the side. (Source: Facebook) Mounties are trying to determine the source of a pipe bomb that was found in Lloydminster on Thursday. Police were called to the backyard of a home at 41 Street near 49 Avenue for a report of an object that looked like a bomb. Officers cordoned off the area, and the Alberta RCMP explosive disposal unit dismantled the device, which was confirmed to be a pipe bomb. Mounties say it's not known if this was an isolated incident or if there are other pipe bombs in the area. 'We understand that these situations can be stressful for members of the community and Albertans in general' said Cpl. Christopher Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP in a news release. 'We are hard at work investigating the issue and getting the answers the public needs in order to ensure their safety.' Residents are asked to be vigilant, not to approach any suspicious objects, and to report their findings to Lloydminster RCMP at 780-808-8400.
